Ereben definitely didn't mind that they were flying straight. He had never been between, that weird thing that dragons did to get from one place to another, but he wasn't eager to give it a try either. He nodded to T'ryn that he understood why they were taking a long flight but his mind was going a million miles a minute over the experience.
He placed one hand cautiously on Syrendryth's hide, trying to feel what a dragon felt like without making it look like he was doing so. It was oddly...soft. He had always thought that dragons were scaly like tunnel snakes but now he scowled in confusion at turning out to be wrong.
And then the dragon took off, up and up and up, high, high, higher.
Ereben's face split into a big smile.
He was FLYING!
A laugh escaped his mouth before he could stop it. This was unreal! He was really flying on the back of a dragon and he was going somewhere new where he could start over! No more stealing, no more eating scraps, no more being beaten for being himself, no more hiding in shadows and caves. No more of any of that shit.
As T'ryn pointed out various landmarks, the smile did not leave Ereben's face. He took it all in. It was amazing! It wasn't until they approached the peaks of High Reaches that Ereben said, "That's...that's the Weyr?" He was so stunned with its size that he totally didn't realize that he had probably just given himself away with that question.
