2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Thistle!

A Quick And Dirty Summary

- There are 12 months with 30 days in each.

- Every Candidate is offered a firelizard egg (free of charge ooc). If they do not accept it at first but later on want one, they can still claim it from the Candidate master. This is to help Candidates (Holders especially) get an idea what the bond is like and what caring for a dragon will entail with the feeding and oiling. Green, blue, and brown are the only available colours.

- Firelizards were rediscovered in 732.

- Holds and Halls have overall accepted the return of dragons and some small tithing has started up. There are still plenty of people that won’t like them and some relationships are still strained and require work or bribes to get something.

- Wings are currently not made but will be put together IC soon. The Weyrleaders are starting to see the need for them and now that they have settled another Weyr, they have time to work on them and get them started. They will likely start up in late 743 or early 744.

- Firestone is currently not practiced with but will be something that is brought back with the Wings.

- Fort Weyr will only allow women to Stand if they agree to only Stand at Fort and they take the healer course Weyrleader R’nya has put in place with the Hall. That course takes 8-10 months depending on how slow you are to learn it. This is in place so that the goldriders will all be trained in healing when Thread comes again. They will allow girls from other Weyrs to Stand for any clutches that have a gold egg but the girl that Impresses must agree to stay in Fort and learn healing upon graduating. At the end of 742, females will no longer be sent to the Healer Hall as it was only a three year contract. There will be enough women trained that they can start training other female Candidates (and goldriders that Impressed before they could be trained, such as Zahrah) within the Weyr.

- Weyrmates: There’s no ceremony or anything fancy. It’s generally assumed if you live together, you’re mated. You just spread the word that you and [name] are now mates. You don’t need to exchange rings or gifts unless you want to.

- Marriage: While some of the Lords might make it a big event with fancy clothes and a large all day/night feast, they’re fairly simple for the rest of the world. It’s more of a hand-fasting ceremony with a Harper overseeing it for their records. Rings can be exchanged, but they also aren’t always needed, especially for the lower class and crafters that work with their hands regularly.

- Dragonriders have a decent amount of freedom still without Wings being formed. They are free to travel to other Weyrs for visits whenever they want to so long as any duties/chores they assist with are not interrupted.

- Goldriders: While you are taught how to between, you are not as free to travel as the other colours. Golds are precious and the only ones that can produce eggs so they are more closely watched and not allowed to jump as often for fear of accidents.

- Candidates: If you want to leave the Weyr for any reason or to go to any location, you need to tell the Candidate master so they can keep track of where you are and any chores you help with can be covered if you get approved for a multi-day pass.

- The rest of the Weyrfolk don’t have a need to leave the Weyr since most are born into the life or no longer have a family to return to. Some may go on runs for supplies but dragonriders often assist in that as they’re faster than carts.

- When a Hatching is announced, muffins, fruit, and water are set out by the Candidate Barracks and outside of the Hatching Grounds so Candidates can have a quick bite. Food and drink is never allowed on the actual Sands. If for some reason you can’t hold your bladder during a Hatching, a bucket is placed outside the entrance as the closet location.

- Brownriders are still kind of shunned when it comes to positions of power or anything good thanks to S’kef’s time as Weyrleader. Once the bronzeriders were back in control, they have not allowed brownriders to even be Weyrseconds. Some, especially younger ones, are given Weyrlingmaster positions.

- After blue Faxxonth won gold Thallyath’s Flight, blues have been banned from Chasing. In the past, they humoured the daring blues and let them enter but now they are all grounded during a gold Flight.

- Earth Animals: The settlers had DNA of various useful animals. If you can think of a reason why that animal would be on Pern, it likely is. For example: bees, some breeds of dogs, some breeds of house cats, horses, cows, chickens, pigs. Mice and rats likely snuck onto the ship and can be found as well.

- Some earth foods are also on Pern. Honey and chocolate being the biggest items. Various herbs and spices are fine, as well as rice. We try to keep dishes simple and modest, especially in the Weyrs given the mass production they are doing but if it can be made on simple fires and ovens, it will likely be okay.

- Weyr Public Baths: Picture something like a Roman bath house but on a smaller scale. Usually one ‘large’ pool that can fit 4-5 people or a couple of smaller ones that may fit 1-2 people at a time.

- Flights can happen at any time of the day or night. When a dragon has the itch, it has to be scratched. Most are probably polite enough to Fly when people are awake but late night or early morning have seen their fair share of Flights as well.

- Green Flights last around three hours from the initial Rising to the mating.

- Gold Flights last around six hours from the blooding to the mating.

- Dragons will wait until their rider is old enough and ready for Flights/sex. Some cases may occur where a dragon attempts to Chase due to hormones and confusion.

- The first Flight for greens/golds will be scary and overwhelming as you lose control of your thoughts and actions. You may even be a bit flirtier or feistier during the Chase and physically lash out at the men crowding too close. This is likely to continue for several Flights until you are both older and more comfortable with what is happening, though you never are truly in control. It’s more that you may keep your mind a few minutes longer to help get home or clear out the children.

- The first time Chasing for blues/browns/bronzes is also scary and disorientating as your vision blurs between yours and that of your dragon. You may be grabby and forceful as winning that prize is all that your focus is on. As you get older and enter more Flights, you will also have a bit more time as yourself before giving in to the Flight lust.

- Regardless of which end of the Flight you’re on, you won’t remember much of the encounter as you’re still connected with your dragon. Flights aren’t always the prettiest or sweetest of encounters and both parties may end up bruised and sore.

- For the ‘losers’ of the Flight, it’s fairly common to grab another loser and have sex wherever you are to burn off the lust and frustration. New riders often struggle to fight that urge but may be able to stagger away alone or wait long enough to find a more secluded area. Older riders can usually shake off the urges and leave easier.

- Roads to/from the Weyrs:
Based on the maps of Fort and Benden Weyrs provided in the Guide, the roads actually go through the Lower Caverns and have an inner and outer gate. Building off of that knowledge and implementing safety measures, each gate would have at least one person guarding it in shifts to help announce when a visitor arrives and if they should be let in and to check the reason for someone leaving by foot.

Since each aligned Hold varies in distance from the Weyr, it can take by horse roughly:
Fort: 2 hours each way
Telgar: 5 hours each way
Ista: 7 hours each way
Igen: 7 hours each way
Benden: 8 hours each way
High Reaches: 10 hours each way

- Quick Weyrlinghood Facts For Month 1 & 2:
The first week is spent eating, oiling, and sleeping. Dragonets eat 5-9 small meals a day, are constantly being oiled (as they grow roughly 16% in that week), and get a bath at least once a day.

In that first week, friends and relatives can pop by for a quick visit but you're always within view of the Weyrlingmaster and Assistants for safety purposes.

You're always with your class in the first two months. Humans and dragonets are both a bit overwhelmed and still strengthening the bond so having a more experienced person around keeps everyone safe and happy.

Dragonets have no volume control. Nearly anyone within range will hear what they're saying. Month two is when they start to get better at it but strong emotions may spike that volume right back up.

Humans are still working on the bond and cannot speak through the mind link until around month three.

The first two months is mostly focusing on keeping your dragon alive with some basic classes like refreshing information learned in Candidacy (first aid, dragon anatomy basics). More hands on lessons and games start in month three.

- The Ranks/Titles of the Weyrs Part 1:
Weyrleader: Oversees the dragonriders and has the final say on issues concerning the Weyr at large and how it is run. This is always a bronzerider since they knocked brownrider S'kef out of power.

Weyrsecond: Assists the Weyrleader in the day to day running of the Weyr. If the Weyrleader leaves the Weyr to visit a Hold/Hall/Weyr, the Second must stay behind and ensure things continue to run smoothly. This position is also currently only bronzeriders.

Weyrwoman: Oversees the more domestic side of the Weyr and the goldriders. This is the only title she goes by. We do not use 'queen' for any of our golds. Sr. Weyrwoman can be used when talking about her and the next rank so it doesn't get confusing.

Jr. Weyrwoman: There is only one goldrider in each Weyr with this title. This is the woman that the Weyrwoman is training more directly to one day be Weyrwoman when she retires or another Weyr opens. Jr. WW assists in a lot of the WW's tasks and is also the go between for the WW and the other positions that report to her. This would typically be an older goldrider (bond; not age) and one with a good head on her shoulders.

Headwoman: This woman oversees the staff in the lower caverns from kitchen to laundry to drudges. She works alongside the goldriders in keeping tabs on the inventories and reports to the Weyrwoman (or Jr. Weyrwoman).

Goldriders: All goldriders lend a hand around the Weyr depending on what their Weyrwoman would like them to do. It's usually more clerical work than any hard labour but if the goldrider is trained in a craft (healing or leatherworking for some current ones), they will be left to focus on those areas with only the occasional extra task assigned. They do not carry any extra titles.

Weyrleader Apprentice Program: No official title (though each Weyrleader can give their minions a fancy title if they wish) or a true position. This is to help bronzeriders learn more about what the Weyrleader does so they can take over one day. Kind of akin to the Jr. Weyrwoman in responsibilities.

Weyrlingmaster: The dragonrider in charge of the class that Impressed at their designated Hatching. Can be male or female of green, blue, or brown dragon. Each Weyr has a roster that tracks clutches and WLMs so they get some rotated time off between their clutches.

Weyrlingmaster Assistants: Dragonriders that assist the Weyrlingmaster. Likely to be more green or blue rather than brown. Depending on clutch size, at least two assistants are always assigned. They are also on a rotating roster.

Candidate Master: The dragonrider in charge of the Candidates. The Weyrlingmaster of the upcoming clutch will usually assist in overseeing the group so they get to know Candidates a bit better. The CM ensures the Candidates are given tasks/chores (and complete them), attend classes for learning about the Weyr and dragons (when needed), and they are who the Candidates would speak with if they want to day trip to another Weyr to visit a friend or if they're signing up for a clutch elsewhere.

Candidate Assistants: This is kind of volunteer work for the Weyrlingmaster Assistants that are bored and want to keep busy. Some non-ranked dragonriders can sign up to assist as well.

- Dragonhealing:
The art of dragonhealing was more or less lost thanks to the plague. Those trained in it perished in the plague or exile as most were goldriders and the written records were believed to be lost or destroyed when the Weyrs were ransacked by Harpers (they wanted the records of the Weyrs) and general looters.

In truth, some of the records survived and made their way to the Healer Hall, sitting unattended on a shelf for years. Young L'gan (Logan at the time) would study them regularly until the Hall Master removed the books and locked them away to get the boy to focus on his actual studies.

Thallyath's small and disastrous clutch in 740 sparked a true need to learn more about dragonhealing once more instead of just the basic knowledge dragonriders were taught as weyrlings. Healer Hall and Beastcraft Hall assembled a small team to work together to begin sharing notes on what they knew in their fields and how it would help dragons. Thallyath also generously donated one of the babies that did not survive to further help in the study.

Greenriders L'gan and Eb'zer both achieved Journeyman rank in healing before their accidental Impressions and along with Candidate Narinoa who was a Journeyman Beastcrafter, were the sole caregivers for the three surviving hatchlings.

Master Healer Verec rediscovered the old books of dragonhealing in a locked chest and donated them to the research team. The three prime caregivers were slowly given information that was being learned while they contributed their own notes from what they discovered in their hands on care.

Since month 10 of 741, just over a year after Thallyath's clutch hatched, anyone trained in healing or beastcraft with a serious interest and dedication to learning dragonhealing would have been given the chance to start studying the notes. They wouldn't be given too much hands on experience right away, more like med students watching the operation to learn up close and eventually more hands on assistant work.

In 742, the knowledge is still coming together but they are gaining a clearer image now on full anatomy, digestive systems, wing care, etcetera thanks to everyone’s hard work and a slightly more difficult area of research. It has taken a while to get information out of some of them, but the ex-goldriders were once trained in dragonhealing. Due to their fragile minds and the amount of time that has passed, it has been a delicate process to extract what they know.

Since they have proven themselves level-headed in a crisis and dedicated to the care of dragons, L’gan, Eb’zer, and Narinoa have been put in charge for the time-being as the head dragonhealers in their respective Weyrs as of month 03 of 742 to help gain more structure with this speciality returning. Currently the two greenriders are in Fort Weyr and work together (until one of them decides to relocate to another Weyr) while Narinoa is based in Ista Weyr. Given he is a Candidate and wants to Stand whenever he can, there is an opening for an Ista rider to work alongside him. Telgar and Benden have an opportunity to have their own teams soon.

Currently, anyone interested would be temporarily relocated to Ista and Fort to have lessons with those that have some more advanced training instead of just reading about it. They will eventually be sent back to their own Weyr to help start up the practice there.

This will also open up a new branch in Fort’s female healers rule. Already trained women can start learning dragonhealing in 742 if they have an interest while everyone that starts learning in 743 will be able to choose if they want to learn to heal people or dragons and specialise in that area specifically.
