R’nya watched Ameris approach with something crossed between relief and worry, half expecting the girl to dart around him and vanish into the woods once she had approached. When she did not – and instead took a berry from his outstretched palm – R’nya began to relax. He followed both his invitation and her lead by choosing a berry and placing it in his own mouth, blinking and then frowning as a sudden flush coloured Ameris’ features; the sudden question she posed startled him, so badly in fact that he stared at the girl in confusion for several moments before pulling himself together.
Even once he had managed to compose himself, R’nya was not at all sure he knew how to answer her question. She was clearly being honestly curious; he could tell by her expression that her question was genuine. His brows furrowed, and the silence stretched out between them, R’nya popping another berry between his teeth in order to justify his continued lack of explanation. He had no idea how to answer that question!
Was something wrong? “Yes,” he murmured, deciding to simply go with answering the question she had actually posed, first, before bothering to try and jump ahead and answer the ones she was likely to ask. “It is just gossip, and I should pay it no heed, but the words being whispered are…” how to explain without getting worked up over it? Or more worked up, at any rate. R’nya’s lips pursed angrily and he flicked the rest of the berries on his palm across the top of a nearby bush, puffing out a disgusted snort through flared nostrils.
“Filthy lies,” those two words were ground out on a low hiss, and R’nya glared angrily off to one side, his stance rigid with the anger clearly coursing through him, fisted hands lifting to cross over his chest and he refused to meet Ameris’ eye, quite ashamed of his allowing himself to be so angered by petty gossip.
