Gossip, Rumours and Bad Days [Ameris] - R'nya - 13.Apr.14

Re: Gossip, Rumours and Bad Days [Ameris] - Ameris - 22.Apr.14

While Mizeath lulled in the attention of Torath, Ameris had spent the last several days studiously avoiding both N'kal and R'nya. She was still mortified that she had called poor N'kal by another's name and she was certain that it had gotten to R'nya some how. She wasn't quite sure what to make of the entire situation and her embarrassment would be far greater than it was, if R'nya knew about her dragon sized faux pas. Mizeath of course found the entire situation highly entertaining and had often teased her rider unmercifully about it since it happened.

Ameris could feel her face grow warm at the thought of it as she wandered about. She'd set off with no real destination in mind, wanting to get away from the grins and fake congratulations on the flight of Mizeath and all the rumors. Rumors were running rampant around the weyr, though she couldn't really find fault in the people who spread them. From what she had gleaned, they were juicy tidbits. She, herself, wasn't one to actually assist in the spreading of such tails and especially about a particular man.

On top of her own problems she hadn't a clue how to deal with some of the things she'd heard in the last few days. Everything from R'nya being a vicious loser to him and K'tir shacking up together and they confused her. She was fairly certain R'nya wasn't into men that way, but really what did she know? It wasn't much, but she was still certain of that. It was difficult to imagine him being anything but sweet and gentle to a woman but her father had been sweet and gentle once.

She hummed as she walked, lost in thought not paying attention to her movements and she drifted here and there, grabbing a wildflower or two as she did so. She didn't see the movement ahead of her, didn't hear the sounds of R'nya sifting through a berry bush, didn't even know anyone else was out here until she was nearly on top of him. She started with a slight gasp when she caught sight of him half way through a bush. Her face flushed and her eyes widened as she stared at him. What if he'd heard about her calling N'kal by his name? What was she supposed to do? She felt like a wherry facing down a dragon, the panic beginning to set in. Did she flee or did she say hello? Say hello of course, came the amused answer in her mind.

"Hello…" she said quietly, preparing to flee if she needed to.

R'nya

Re: Gossip, Rumours and Bad Days [Ameris] - R'nya - 04.May.14

Had R’nya been paying attention to the gossip, instead of going so terribly out of his way to ignore it all and avoid anyone with a wagging tongue, undoubtedly he would have learned of Ameris’ slip of the tongue. Moreover, perhaps if he had, he would not be looking at the girl with something that crossed between heartbreak and horror as she stared at him like a wherry cornered by a dragon… Not that Ameris looked anything at all like a wherry, R’nya amended quietly, and he certainly did not feel nearly as glamorous as a dragon.

You’re rambling, Sir, the bronze put in, his tone long suffering as he huffed. R’nya had been doing a lot of rambling lately, or he was so silent Xyreith had to stir up some type of memory just to be sure the man were still walking with him on the soil of Pern and not lost in the depths of between. The bronze was more than a little bit worried, but what was a dragon to do for human stupidity? For his part, Xyreith had been has happy to mingle in the company as Mizeath as ever, when she was of a mood to spend it with him. In contrast, he was still avoiding Aradissicath and her sour mood, when he was not doing his usual to press her buttons – which came in the form of chatting to the other golds. Aradissicath was a possessive little bitch!

So are you, and you reek of your adoration for her, Xyreith. R’nya interrupted his dragon’s wandering thoughts to push the bronze away from him mentally, so he could concentrate on the girl who was looking so close to fleeing if he so much as twitched. R’nya’s expression softened into one of sorrow, showing more emotions across his usually stoic features in those few minutes than probably all of the past year of social interactions.

“Hello, my dear.” Three small word, spoken on a soft voice, gentle and affection as R’nya sighed them out, shoulders slumping just slightly. He was still worried even that small movement would send Ameris fleeing. Never having been one for small talk, R’nya flailed mentally for some way to continue before the silence between their greetings turned into heavy awkwardness. He probably did nothing but damn himself to awkwardness as he held his hand out, several berries on his palm. “Berry?” His eyebrows furrowed above his eyes, expression hopeful, the bronzerider too lost in trying not to be scary to wear the usual stoic mask, forgetting that Rhaedalyn had been more freaked out by his show of humanity than his mask when they had been in a similar situation during the landslide.

She watched the play of emotions that moved across his face with something crossed between horror and curiosity, not to mention a healthy dose of confusion. Never in the past had she seen such a display from R'nya and it was at once frightening and lovely. But the confusion rattled about her mind trying to grasp at a reasoning behind it. What could possibly have happened for such a thing to be brought to the surface? To her knowledge the stoic man never allowed another to see what lay just beneath the surface and for him to do so now in front of her was startling.

Her eyes were still wide when he offered her a hello, shoulders slumped dejectedly, before the silence grew once more. It was awkward, this moment in time and her own brow began to furrow with it. They'd never seemed to have an issue before. Always before they were able to speak to each with relative ease, never floundering or stuttering in conversation. What made today so different? If she thought about the answer would be simple and right there for her to see, but she was still stuck on the emotions that had drifted across his face and the awkwardness of the situation.

She took a few experimental steps when he offered the berry. It wasn't long before she had closed the distance between them and gently slipped a berry from his hand. Popping it into her mouth, she savored the flavor as she regarded him with dark eyes. Something must be wrong. Maybe he had heard about her mistake the morning of Mizeath's flight and the thought brought color high into her cheeks. Perhaps you should just ask him if he is alright, Ameris, Mizeath inserted with her voice colored with her own curiosity.

Glancing at him again Ameris asked, "R'nya…. Is there something wrong?"

R’nya watched Ameris approach with something crossed between relief and worry, half expecting the girl to dart around him and vanish into the woods once she had approached. When she did not – and instead took a berry from his outstretched palm – R’nya began to relax. He followed both his invitation and her lead by choosing a berry and placing it in his own mouth, blinking and then frowning as a sudden flush coloured Ameris’ features; the sudden question she posed startled him, so badly in fact that he stared at the girl in confusion for several moments before pulling himself together.

Even once he had managed to compose himself, R’nya was not at all sure he knew how to answer her question. She was clearly being honestly curious; he could tell by her expression that her question was genuine. His brows furrowed, and the silence stretched out between them, R’nya popping another berry between his teeth in order to justify his continued lack of explanation. He had no idea how to answer that question!

Was something wrong? “Yes,” he murmured, deciding to simply go with answering the question she had actually posed, first, before bothering to try and jump ahead and answer the ones she was likely to ask. “It is just gossip, and I should pay it no heed, but the words being whispered are…” how to explain without getting worked up over it? Or more worked up, at any rate. R’nya’s lips pursed angrily and he flicked the rest of the berries on his palm across the top of a nearby bush, puffing out a disgusted snort through flared nostrils.

“Filthy lies,” those two words were ground out on a low hiss, and R’nya glared angrily off to one side, his stance rigid with the anger clearly coursing through him, fisted hands lifting to cross over his chest and he refused to meet Ameris’ eye, quite ashamed of his allowing himself to be so angered by petty gossip.

Her eyes tracked the berries as the sailed over the bush R’nya had tossed them at and color continued to stain her face. Surely the entire weyr hadn’t found out about her faux pas and passed it around! Do not be silly, Ameris! We would have heard the rumors ourselves if it had been something about that, Mizeath interjected at the thought, but Ameris still had her doubts.

The dragon was becoming quite vexed with her rider. Ameris’ insistent need to recount and replay that morning was wearing on Mizeath’s incredible patience. She had half a mind to bring the matter up to Xyrieth but knew that it would cause Ameris undue stress and so had refrained from speaking to the other bronze. Mizeath couldn’t really understand what the big deal was anyway! So Ameris had accidentally called N’kal by the wrong name, it’s not as if she’d harmed the man!

Ameris startled, wide eyed at the tone that came from R’nya. She blinked at his anger, confused and not a little frightened by the sudden change in the man’s demeanor. It was hugely unexpected, that intensity, and she trembled slightly with the errant thought that it might come to physical blows and she shrank back just a little when he raised closed fists. Deep down she knew he would never harm her, but too often she had said the same of A’mad and too often her father had proven her hopes false.

The refusal to meet her eyes brought Ameris out of her fears, if only a little, and had her moving forward before she knew it. When she was close enough, the woman halted and stared at R’nya. Gossip was just gossip was her only thought but she knew some of the rumors were quite terrible. Not that she believed any of them of course, but they were terrible just the same. “It’s just gossip, R’nya,” she said quietly, “And of course they’re lies! Things muttered by people too bored with their lives to do much else.”

She was finding that she quite disliked the distress R’nya felt at this particular moment and the feeling was confusing and not all at the same time. The woman refused to admit that perhaps there was more in her than just friendship, her random bursts of thoughts ignored and brushed aside. Ameris fought to keep the glare she had for Mizeath, as the gold chuckled in her mind at her thoughts, off her face lest R’nya think it was for him. It just wouldn’t do for him to think she was angry!
