Weyrlinghood Guide
A Guide on Weyrlinghood
General Weyrling Info
Pre-Impression Requirements

While the Candidate Master will still be assigning chores, ensuring that candidates are in their beds (or otherwise accounted for) at lights-out, and handling any disciplinary matters, it is the Weyrlingmaster who determines who can or cannot enter the Sands for a Touching or Hatching. Only the Weyrleader or the Goldrider of the clutch can overrule them, though this is an exceptionally rare case.

Weyrlingmasters may have different 'house rules' and policies about what they will or will not accept in their classes, and what one might accept another may not stand. Any additional requirements a Weyrlingmaster may have are announced to Candidates shortly after the clutch is laid. Information about the different Weyrlingmasters and their requirements can be found HERE.

Weyr-wide Pre-Impression requirements are as follows, and will be updated as required. If a Candidate has not fulfilled these requirements by the time the class is to take part in the Touching, the Weyrlingmaster has full permission of the Weyrleaders to bar them from the Sands.

  • No virgins, of either gender, over the age of 17.
  • Homosexual experimenting is heavily encouraged among male candidates.

These requirements are unavoidable for all candidates that wish to stand for fighting dragons. Gold candidates are given a little more freedom - they are usually only required to lose their virginity before being accepted onto the Sands for the Hatching.

Teaching Staff

Our weyrlings are educated a little differently on Second Pass than they are in a lot of other sandboxes. The main difference one will find when viewing Second Pass and their classes will be that each and every class has its own Weyrlingmaster.

A Weyrlingmaster will follow his entire class from the moment of Impression through to their graduation, before taking on another class if they so desire, or taking some time off to rejoin the Wings. The Weyrlingmasters report to the Weyrleader, though there may be a Senior Weyrlingmaster who serves as a single point of contact and general guide for younger Weyrleaders.

In addition, each Weyrlingmaster has multiple weyrling assistants at their disposal to help keep an eye on the class and to provide assistance with lessons as required. In the early months most of their time is spent fetching oil and food for exhausted weyrlings and making sure they do not wander too far. They still keep watch over the class as they grow older and more independent, but are less likely to constantly hover unless directed to for individual troublemakers.

The Weyrling Barracks

For the first several months of their dragons’ lives, weyrlings live grouped with their class in the Weyrling Barracks. The barracks is a series of large open caverns with slabs of stone couches for dragons lining the walls, each with a futon and chest arranged for their riders. Older weyrling classes stay at the front of the barracks near the entrance to the Bowl where there is more room for the larger dragons. Classes are not separated by gender though a few individual rooms are usually set aside for gold weyrlings these tend to serve as storage when not otherwise occupied. Curtains are provided for some semblance of privacy. Weyrlings also have a common area furnished with chairs, couches, and small tables. At least one common area will have a small stove to provide additional heat, and supplies to make klah or coffee. Weyrlngmasters and assistants will also frequently stock snacks in this area.

There are attached bathing rooms and latrines so that weyrlings do not have to leave the barracks, a latrine is also supplied to dragonets, usually with its own exit for handling cleaning and waste disposal by a dragonrider. The entrances also have alcoves carved into the sides for either weyrlingmaster assistants or trusted dragonriders to keep watch and try to prevent sneaking out or in. These alcoves frequently have a chair and small desk so that assistants can handle any paperwork at the same time or prepare for lessons. Lectures and written examinations usually happen in the classrooms attached to the barracks, though some teachers may choose to hold those lessons outside in the Bowl if the weather is suitable.

The weyrlingmaster and the weyrling assistants have private weyrs attached to the barracks that serve as their personal quarters and offices. They will live with the weyrlings until they have all been assigned their own private weyrs, at which point the Weyrlingmaster and assistant may return to their own weyrs as well.

Telgar's Weyrling Barracks:

Rules

We employ a variety of rules depending on the time frame of the Weyrlinghood the pair are currently within. These rules are generally enforced via dragon's mind-reading and grumpy Weyrlingmasters. In Character rule breaking will, of course, result in In Character consequences. You are, however, encouraged to cause mischief. Please talk to the Player of your Weyrlingmaster if they have one, or speak to a member of the Team if your Weyrlingmaster is an NPC.

Rules carry on through the following months until they are noted as being lifted.

Shut up, and listen!

The Weyrlingmaster has been there, done that, and knows what he is talking about. As a result, weyrlings are expected to show a little respect, shut their mouths, and listen to what he has to say. His dragon will be more than capable of reading their minds, and will likely do so with little to no knowledge of the weyrling - or his dragon - when needed. Weyrlings should be prepared for their Weyrlingmaster to know exactly what is going on, at all times, regardless of whether he is present or not. This covers all instances, such as attempting something not yet covered in training (flight, between, etc) through to simply being disrespectful - as well as everything and anything else.

No Leaving

Weyrlings are expected to remain within the Weyr at all times no matter how old or experienced they are unless express permission is granted by the Weyrlingmaster or a class is taken outside of the Weyr for a drill, lesson, or field trip.

No Drugs

Drug usage is severely frowned upon, particularly when used by dragonriders. Weyrling usage of drugs is heavily monitored, to be no more than those which are allowed by a healer for medical reasons. All individuals are expected to sober up during their candidacy time, and obtaining drugs post Impression is nigh impossible for most weyrlings. Those suffering withdrawal symptoms are handled delicately by the Healer team on a case by case basis.

Alcohol Restrictions

Alcohol is expected to be removed from the diet of weyrlings for the duration of the first 3 to 4 months after Impression. After that initial period, alcohol may once more be consumed, though weyrlings are expected to be understanding of their dragonet, and receptive to the young dragon's limits. Those who are unable to monitor their own usage will have their right to drink removed by their Weyrlingmaster on a case by case basis.

Intimacy Restrictions

Intimacy between a weyrling and a fellow weyrling, or a weyrling and anyone else is strictly prohibited for the first 2-3 months. Masturbation during this time frame is also frowned upon, and those with strong sex drives are encouraged to take inhibiting drugs from the Healers to assist with their control. Weyrlings who happen to already be mated or have children are advised to take great care when trying to explain or even think about their relationships, especially while their dragons are very young and may not understand their bonded’s ability to share their affections and devotion with others. Some dragons are more possessive or insecure than others and this will vary on a case by case basis. Weyrlingmasters provide additional support for these matters on a case by case basis.

After the first 2-3 month period - depending on individual dragonets - sexual activities may be added to the weyrlings life once more, though their choice in partners is mildly monitored. Weyrlings are allowed to sleep with other weyrlings who have been cleared for intimacy and candidates. Some dragonets may take even longer to warm up to the idea of intimacy, and will be cleared on a case by case basis by the weyrlingmaster.

After the ten month period, most dragonets are chasing or being chased, and sexual activity will no longer be monitored at all.

Punishments

Punishments for rule breaking and misbehavior are handed out by the Weyrlingmaster depending on the offense and severity. These punishments may include but are not limited to:

  • Additional chores added to list
  • Additional exercises
  • Additional lectures
  • Writing reflection essays
  • Writing independent study essays
  • Being made to assist with lessons
  • Repeating lessons
  • Loss of privileges (free time, rest days, allowances, etc)
  • Transfer to a younger weyrling class
  • Grounding
  • Seclusion
  • Confinement to the quarters
  • Loss of personal Weyr
  • Failure to graduate
Weyrling Training

From the moment of Impression, to the moment they graduate, those youngsters that Impress at a Hatching are required to undergo twelve months of Weyrling Training. These are a series of classes designed to educate the young pair - human and dragon both - on what it means to be a dragonrider and how best to take care of one another, among other things. Weyrling Training can - and usually will - consist of everything from lectures, note taking, 'homework' tasks, and practical classes that range from coordination building games through learning how to fly and travel between. Topics are frequently repeated and reviewed in following months to ensure retention and understanding.

It is absolutely required that every Weyrling attend their classes, as a full education is required before they can graduate, and only those that are considered worthy of such are 'tapped' into a Wing - not every dragonrider becomes a wing rider! Additional classes are made available for those that are unlikely to be wingrider quality, and these riders usually serve as sentries, messengers, or taxis. These surplus riders may be assigned to a Hold to perform those duties as well depending on any arrangements made between the Weyrleader and the Hold’s Lord.

Additional advanced classes for Searchriding and dragonhealing are available after graduation for those who show aptitude and interest in those fields.

Daily Schedule

Contrary to a lot of Pern sites, it should be noted that Second Pass does not adhere to a strict schedule for the Weyrlings. Instead, Weyrlings, much like everyone else within the Weyr, have a basic daily list of duties that they are expected to undergo, but otherwise their day is generally their own to do as they please within the following structure:

The first Two Months:
  • At no time will a weyrling be allowed to go anywhere without the weyrlingmaster or an assistant present aside from a quick trip to the toilet or bath.
  • The Weyrlingmaster and assistants will be a constant vigilant presence, working in shifts to ensure that there is always someone awake to keep an eye on and help the class.
  • Dragonets should be fed, oiled, and bathed as often as required and demanded by the dragonet. The Weyrlingmaster and assistants will monitor for signs that a dragonet is gorging itself in an unhealthy manner.
  • Nap! The first month is exhausting with the first week worst of all as Weyrlings adjust to the impact their mates have on their minds. Especially during the first month, Weyrlings are encouraged to nap whenever they wish, and the weyrling assistants will handle any odd hour mealtime needs.
  • Due to the constant napping, lessons during this time are conducted on a more personal basis as weyrlings are awake, and are frequently repeated. During the second month, the weyrlingmaster and assistants begin to help the weyrlings adjust their dragonets to a more regular sleep schedule.
Junior Weyrlings:
  • While they may not be constantly shadowed by an assistant, Jr Weyrlings are expected to remain with their classmates. Weyrlings may split up into groups for occasional leisure activities such as a walk around the bowl or visit to the lake, but they must keep the Weyrlingmaster or assistants informed of their plans at all times. Friends and family are welcome to visit in the Bowl just outside of the barracks.
  • The Weyrlingmaster should be greeted every morning for general assessment of the dragonet to assist with preventing avoidable issues in the dragonet’s development. The exact time frame will depend on the Weyrlingmaster in question; some are up before the sun, some are most certainly not.
  • Dragonets should be fed and oiled. Bathing should be done at least every other day during the process of their major growth, though it is not 100% required. It will vary from dragonet to dragonet.
  • All scheduled classes must be attended, and any assignments completed prior to the date set by their Weyrlingmaster.
  • Any assigned chores must be completed except on rest days.
  • All Weyrlings should be back within their Barracks by a respectable hour, as deemed by their Weyrlingmaster.
Senior Weyrlings:
  • The Weyrlingmaster should be greeted every morning for continued assessment of the dragon’s growth and development.
  • Dragons should be oiled and bathed as required.
  • Weyrlings are expected to adhere to an exercise regimen to ensure their continued fitness.
  • All scheduled classes and drills must be attended, and any assignments completed.

Weyrlingmasters have control of their own course material and schedule their lessons according to personal preference and teaching style. OOCly, lessons are roughly outlined within this page for each month, but are allowed to be altered as befits the Weyrlingmaster in question, within reason. Topics are frequently repeated and reviewed in following months to ensure retention and understanding. Some Weyrlingmasters are stricter, with several classes within a week. Other Weyrlingmasters are more relaxed, with fewer scheduled classes and more ‘homework’ assigned tasks.

Private tutoring can be given to any Weyrling, at any time, either by their Weyrlingmaster, an Assistant, or an approved Dragonrider.

If a PC Weyrlingmaster is not assigned to a clutch, assume they teach three (3) lessons a week, for a 3-4 hour session.
