Tala started at the unexpected voice, so lost in her own thought she hadn’t seen the other woman approach. “What? Oh, hello.” She said, taking a moment to register the question. “She’s almost a turn old. Her birthday is in just over a week.” Tala said, smiling down at Ryvala. All the women said the first turn of life was the hardest for babies, and their chances of reaching adulthood were much better once they’d reached that first birthday. Tala was grateful nothing had happened and Vala had made it this far.
She turned her attention from her child to the woman who’d joined her by the lake, frowning at her thoughtfully. Tala could swear she knew the woman, but couldn’t recall her name. They’d definitely both been in Katila, had probably even played together as children, but the name… There were so many weyrbrats from Katila, Tala could hardly keep track of them all.
“You’re a Candidate, right?” She asked, watching as the other women began to do her laundry. “I think I’ve seen you in the classes before.”
