I'shan's eyes narrowed. "You asked a question," he pointed out, irritated by Valerian's little stab at him. He didn't bristle so much as usual, though. He just sighed and looked back down at the bubbling water, mind whirling at a mile a minute as he tried to keep himself in line. Selfish and impulsive, I'shan had a hard time keeping himself reigned in when things like this popped up. He bit his tongue and listened regardless, listening to the younger bluerider's concerns and remembering vividly how it felt to have those same concerns himself, especially a a youngster.
"I didn't ask you who it was," I'shan said, tone more mellow. "And I'm not going to. I probably wouldn't know them, anyhow," he said. He figured it was one of the classmates or something. He managed a small smile at Valerian's sideways attempt to cheer him up, though I'shan thought it seemed like Valerian was trying to convince himself as much as anyone else.
"You're a good kid," he pointed out a moment later. "A lot of blueriders dive into it..make a lifestyle out of it," he pointed out. I'shan remembered almost falling into those habits several times himself, even recently. He looked vaguely distressed at the thought. "Flights can be a lot of fun, but they get hairy pretty easy, too. I know everyone prattles on about how it's just part of rider life, but it really is true." He frowned helplessly. "I wish I could give you a better answer. The truth is, everyone ultimately suffers because of it. Greenriders get saddled with a nasty reputation because of it, too."
He bit his lip. "I always wanted to be better than that, but I guess I lack the self-control. You have a better head on your shoulders than I do, though." Admitting that wasn't easy, and it showed on his contorted face. "I think you're gonna be fine. I'm glad your friend is okay."
