The warmth and reassurance from the gold egg washed over her, despite the creature’s obvious sense of being overwhelmed. “It’s alright, little one. There is much to do, but everything will work out fine.” She smiled and shifted, running her hand over the shell, enjoying the quiet, until it wasn’t quiet anymore.
The sickening crunch across the sands sent an involuntary shudder down her spine, and she knew something horrible had happened. In the split second as she heard the intake of breath from the queen dragon behind her, she reached for the other candidate at the gold egg, moving to pull them both clear and well away from the frighteningly delicate thing. Malvayth, usually so kind and sweet, was nothing but powerful roaring rage, tossing candidates about the sands. Aederyn didn’t release the grip on the other girl as she dragged her away from the precious eggs and toward the entrance, tackling her to the ground to dodge the powerful tail of the enraged queen. A heartbeat passed, and after making sure that the other girl was unharmed, she leapt to her feet and scanned the sands to take in what was happening.
Malvayth stood over where the broken egg lay on the sands, its occupant crushed, and so, so horrifyingly dead. “Oh, no…” A sob caught in her throat. She couldn’t blame Malvayth for her grief or anger. Losing a baby was something no mother should ever have to endure. Choking the feeling down, she shifted her focus to the others on the sands, carefully making her way toward another who had been sent sprawling, helping the dazed candidate to their feet and herding them out of the grounds. Gotta keep moving. One foot in front of the other. Don’t stop. Get somewhere safe and leave the mourning queen be.
