Hearing the sadness in her voice felt like a rock had dropped into the pit of his stomach. His brows knit together and his eyes searched her face. She couldn’t be too far off from his own age, yet she’d already been through so much. She really had remade herself with her own broken pieces. To be so strong… By the sound of it, too, she was still a work in progress. But then again, weren’t they all?
His feet froze in their tracks and he just stared at her as she turned in a lazy circle. Shaking his head in admiration, Alekse reflected briefly on his own life, which seemed downright cushy by comparison. He honestly couldn’t say how he would have fared in similar circumstances. “Thank you.” He murmured, barely above a whisper. “Thank you for sharing that with me.”
She’d gotten a bit ahead of him, and smiling, he lengthened his next several strides to catch up. “And you’re talking to a Runner…small steps on a longer journey are all I know. I have no idea when I’ll finally reach my final stop, or where that will be.” He shrugged nonchalantly, the faintest quirk of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “But Benden seems to be calling out to me…”
At the mention of dragons and her hoping to Impress, he studied her once more, taking a calculated risk with his next words, knowing that some viewed dragon color as a measure of prestige, somehow. “You’ll take a green, for sure.” He nodded. “Fighters, like you. Quick, adaptable, determined.” He watched her expression carefully, hoping she would see it as the compliment he’d intended.
