“Definitely the wrong people,” he replied almost under his breath. But as he was tugged along again, he fell completely silent as he debated whether he should point out the fatal flaw in this trip before they reached the water’s edge.
It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Not everyone can swim and I’ve heard that a lot of people have never seen the ocean before coming here so you even getting into the water a little bit is more than most have done. A’tay gave a small smile as his dragon’s voice filled his mind and offered him the warmth of support.
I think I’m more afraid of her tossing me in and making me learn. She seems the sort to not let anything stop her. It wasn’t a bad trait to have but he was genuinely afraid of deep water and had turned down many offers from friends to teach him.
I can go to the larger beach if you want to distract her. Maybe she’ll be content to swim with me?
A’tay shook his head, not wanting to resort to the dragon rescue just yet. Later. I do want her to meet you, especially since I signed us up to bring her to the Gather.
When they made it to the end of the path and the sand greeted his boots, A’tay sighed and lightly tugged on Zelly’s arm to get her to stop a moment. “I… I can’t swim, Zelly. I was dunked under the water as a kid and held almost too long before let up. Pranks, right? But I’m terrified of deep water and never go in very far.” He had managed to keep eye contact for most of his confession but by the end of it he was staring at their feet with his face burning from a new form of embarrassment. She was pretty and way cooler than he would ever be and now she knew he was lame on top of boring.
