Dareji was one of the ones that stood there in shock as everything almost literally fell apart. The ground was shaking, people were freaking out, and hatchlings were just as panicked and vanishing before they could Impress. Like many, she remembered the landslide but her entire family had come out unscathed, though friends were lost and the memory of the keening that seemed to go on for days was something she’d never forget.
But it left her in shock this time and she didn’t run like some others or take shelter in case the roof caved in or more claws started flying. She just stood there as tears silently slid down her cheeks as she watched baby after baby give into fear. She hated losing dragons in general as older ones could leave someone behind and young ones could go alone without ever bonding. But there was more to it this time as the babies seemed to choose death over dealing with what frightened them. Dareji didn’t think she ever hid from things but that wasn’t true. She had her own fears, like disappointing her family with Impressing, or telling Madiquel’s cute Healer friend she was cute and being rejected because Holders were odd.
Her fears were a lot more minor than thinking her life was in danger and disappearing to avoid the pain or loneliness, but Dareji took it as motivation all the same. If she didn’t Impress this time, she’d keep standing until she wasn’t allowed to anymore. As to thinking a Holder was cute, well screw it. She would tell Vaera that after the Hatching and go from there—unless she got a dragon and then that would have to wait a bit.
Then someone was mauled and Dareji lost a lot of her determination to handle her silly matters. It wasn’t good to lose focus on the sands and she snapped her attention back to what was going on around her, thankful that the chaos didn’t seem to really come in her direction. A little green did and while it wasn’t her preferred colour, Dareji still held her breath and let out a disappointed sigh as the girl continued on to her male lifemate.
