Secret Santa Event: Hunting For Information @'B'Kit'
---
Cazan had two goals in mind as she stepped out of her room: find a dragonrider that would talk to her so she could hopefully get an idea of the sorts of products she could make and sell to them, and then see if she could find a private bathroom somewhere. So far she'd managed to get in a very sneaky (and very lucky if she was honest) quick bath when no one else was around, but surely there was a better place. She'd figure out a way to make due in the meantime, maybe even bribe her way into one. Bribes meant money which meant work though, so that was priority number one.
So she headed out into the more open part of the weyr (which she was pretty sure was called the bowl) to see if she could find a dragonrider who was not attached to a bronze dragon. She spotted a likely young man with a dragon that was distinctly not bronze but rather a much more approachable sized blue. So smaller probably meant younger, blue meant... not as self important as bronze? She wasn't actually sure she realized.
Only one way to find out. Cazan strode boldly towards the pair, smiling and waving as she approached. In the friendliest version of her carefully cultivated masculine voice she called out, "Hello there! Hope I'm not interrupting terribly much, but I was wondering if you'd be able to help me and maybe in exchange I can help you as well." She waited only long enough to make sure he'd heard before continuing, "I'm a leatherworker by trade and I'm looking into possible work opportunities here in the weyr. Think you could spare a moment to talk? I'm rather curious about the gear dragonriders use."

B’kit looked up from where he was oiling Erebuth as a new voice called over to them. He didn’t recognize the young man, but then caught the explanation about leatherwork and smiled. “Nothing urgent at least.”
He wiped a hand off on one of the rags and offered it. “I’m B’kit and this is Erebuth. I’d be happy to talk if you don’t mind me continuing to oil him while we do.” Erebuth opened one eye, checked that Kitt didn’t seem phased by the newcomer, and settled in again. Oiling was more important to the dragonet than being shy, and B’kit used that to his advantage whenever he could, helping his blue meet more people while relaxed.
There was a rock nearby and he gestured to it for a seat for Caz while they talked. “What would you like to know? We aren’t quite old enough yet to have our own straps to deal with, but hopefully soon. At least I grew up around dragons, so I’m familiar enough with riding gear.”

Cazan gave the offered hand a firm shake as she smiled, glad to have gotten this far. "Nice to meet you, I'm Cazelerias, you can call me Caz if you'd like." She resisted the urge to stay standing and hover as she moved to the indicated rock to take a seat. "Mostly right now I'm trying to get a feel for what else is needed besides the usual fare. Are straps like saddles on horses? I've done tack work, though my specialty is more geared towards garments. Do dragons use bridles or head halters, anything like that?"
She pulled out her notebook and pencil to take some notes and do some rough sketching of Erebuth's shape to provide a rough diagram for any ideas and explanations. It wasn't the most artistic or beautiful drawing of a dragon, but it would be enough to get the point across when she reviewed her notes later. There was one thing she was curious about as she watched B'kit massaging oil into the dragon's hide, what was it exactly? It appeared similar to the leather conditioners she used for some of the pieces she made.
"And another question if you don't mind, but is that a... skin conditioner? It seems similar to some of the products I use in my work." She'd almost called it a leather conditioner, but thought better of it. People probably didn't want to think of living things in pre-leather terms.

“Caz, then,” he said with a smile. “The straps are more for us to stay secure on their backs; the dragons don’t need to be guided like a horse, especially since they speak with us.” They talked for a bit about the types and shapes of straps, and B’kit asked about saddles in return, never having had a chance to ride a horse but liking them.
“Something like that,” B’kit said, grinning over Erebuth’s back at Cazelerias. “I don’t know everything that goes into it; some folks add herbs to theirs, but it’s mostly just oil. It helps keep Erebuth’s hide from cracking and itching as he grows. Dragons aren’t like tunnel snakes which shed their skin, but more like us; it grows with them. But dry skin can be irritating... or even dangerous when they’re old enough to go between.”
He checked with Erebuth quickly before offering, “would you like to help? Erebuth says he wouldn’t mind. If you wanted to get a closer look.” The blue glanced over at Caz, his eyes swirling a calm greenish-blue.

Cazan eagerly wrote down everything that the dragonrider shared, adding small notes and strap diagrams onto her sketched dragon, and adding a few more to the next page as she asked for the occasional bit of clarification. On a new sheet she drew a quick diagram of a horse saddle for B'kit to look at as well, pointing out the different parts and design considerations when used on a horse.
When the conversation shifted to the oiling she wrote those notes down as well, especially the addition of some herbs by some riders. When B'kit mentioned that dry skin was dangerous when dragons went between she couldn't help but think of ghost dragons with flaky skin floating around in the darkness.
"Oh of course I'd like to help, thank you." Getting hands on experience was much better than listening and watching, so Cazan readily agreed, setting down her notebook and walking over to stand by the dragon. This would be quite the learning experience, she'd get to see what the oil felt like and try to think of potential oil blends that might perform a bit better, feel the texture of a dragon's hide, see if maybe they would benefit from having the inside of the straps lined with lambs wool or fur, and more importantly it would give her hands something better than a pen to occupy themselves. "So, what do I do. Any spots I should focus on or avoid? Is he ticklish?"

“Take one of those cloths and dip it in the bucket, then find a spot which looks drier. I haven’t gotten to his shoulders yet, or his neck.” He laughed at the question about Erebuth being ticklish. “Sometimes on his belly I can tickle him; but he’s mostly just excited for any oiling and doesn’t mind it.” Fondly, he added, “sometimes I think he’d be happy if we only ever oiled, let alone sleeping or eating or playing.”
Less talking, more oil, please? My jaw itches. The blue turned so that the two could reach the itchy spot. “Try just here,” Kitt said, guiding Caz’s hand. “See how it’s drier than the rest? That’s what we’re trying to fix. If we ignored it, the hide could split and a chill get into it if he betweened. Dragons and riders rarely get sick, but they can. Or the skin could get tight and he’d have less range of motion when flying.”
They talked for a while, Erebuth shyly including the stranger in his commentary when they found the loveliest spots. B’kit asked the leatherworker about their trade in return, curiously. While he’d done basic work on riding straps, he was curious about tooling and other decorative techniques.

"Oh!" Hearing the dragon speak was a bit of a surprise, but once the initial shock wore off Cazan had to admit to herself it wasn't really that far fetched. She'd heard some rumors and stories that the dragons talked to their riders like this, it made sense that they could talk to others as well. At least as much sense as anything else involving dragonriders she'd heard so far. She took her oil soaked cloth and applied it as directed, noting the dry skin with a nod. "Ah, so like when a callous splits in the winter. That makes sense."
Cazan wondered how the oil would compare to her leather conditioner, and if there'd be any sort of market for selling some sort of dragon conditioner. So far from what she was hearing it was a bit of a personal thing, which made sense. She found the simple task of oiling the dragon to be rather soothing in a familiar way, similar to working and conditioning a bit of leather. Though leather never spoke in her head in a low gravelly voice to let her know she'd found a particularly good spot to oil.
"Tooling is fun, though a lot of times I end up using accent stitching and dyes for my decorations. Tooling is better for something thick and substantial like boots or a belt, maybe a thicker set of gauntlets. It's not that hard though, just need a mallet and a stamp and a lot of practice." She happily talked B'kit through the basics, pointing out the tooling in her own belt as an example. "If you want I could bring you a scrap piece to give it a try."
