It was always extra exciting being a Candidate when there was a gold egg. Obviously, for a woman, which Tala was, it meant she was more likely to be allowed to Stand. And more likely to Impress, as a gold egg meant at least one woman would walk away with a lifemate. Well, almost always, anyway. But that wasn’t worth dwelling on. She had an egg to touch! And, well, probably at least one more egg, just because. Tala would be perfectly happy with a gold dragon, but she’d be perfectly happy with a green, or even a blue. Any dragon, as long as it was hers.
She didn’t fuss about where she was in the line to Touch the gold egg. It honestly seemed unlikely they’d leave the Sands until all the gold Candidates had touched the egg. They were in a line, it was obvious how many were left, why leave until all had had a turn? Didn’t make sense to Tala, so she figured even if she was last she’d get her turn. However, she got a spot more toward the middle so she’d have a chance to Touch another egg before leaving. Again, just in case. She knew Touching an egg didn’t guarantee anything, but still. Couldn’t hurt.
While waiting Tala chatted with the other girls around her, listening to them air their own hopes of Impressing. Looking about at the other gold Candidates, Tala realized she was one of the oldest ones in this particular group. She hadn’t expected to feel old at twenty-three, but some of these girls were so young. The face of the poor girl who’d died after being mauled at Nadioth’s Hatching a few months earlier flashed through her mind and she frowned. That was a fluke. It wouldn’t happen again. She didn’t have to picture the faces of the girls around her bloody or contorted with pain.
Annoyed with herself, Tala tugged a bit on her hair to bring her back to the present. She smiled widely at some story a girl nearby was telling, having heard none of it, but she could change that. It wasn’t much longer, doing her best to stay engaged with the girls around her, until it was her turn to Touch the egg.
Tala took a deep breath and approached, whispered a greeting, and placed both hands on the shell of the immense golden egg before her.
Coronet egg, surprise surprise
