“Really?” T’bia’s wide-eyed gaze was both shocked and delighted as he stared at R’nd in surprise. He knew all the Candidates were supposed to get eggs now – and indeed, T’bia had gotten an egg for himself before he had Impressed Jycenth, but the little had died, before it ever go to Hatch. T’bia had been heartbroken and gone out of his way to find a nice shy dragon to put the egg between without airing to the entire world how he had murdered a baby firelizard by letting a tunnel snake get to it. Some of the others had ended up with dud eggs, and a couple of others had been gobbled up, too. No one had ever asked T’bia why he did not have one, but, before he Impressed Jycenth, no one had really even known he existed. T’bia preferred that no one had, though. He still felt awful.
The question started T’bia from his daydreams – the boy having run off mentally and totally missed R’nd’s babbling about Rhaedalyn and berries – to blink in surprise at R’nd, then blush. Jycenth, taking pity on his poor rider, rumbled with amusement as he filled T’bia in on what R’nd had just said, and T’bia wondered how he had ever survived without his beautiful, wonderful, amazing dragon. Jycenth rumbled in amusement, but his eyes shone with embarrassed pride and he turned away bashfully. T’bia grinned at his dragon, and then turned his attention back to R’nd.
“We’re going hunting, ‘cause Jy hasn’t eaten in a couple days and then Papa is taking us flying.” T’bia grinned brightly, “He said he found a meadow, and that there are wild runners in it, and that some of them have babies and that one is a really different colour! We can only take the dragons some of the way, and then we have to hike, but Papa said he’s been watching them for a while now and he knows a good spot to sit and that they don’t mind if he’s quiet so we have to be quiet and-- ” T’bia flushed crimson as he realised he was babbling excitedly and he ducked his head. “And we’re taking a lunch,” he added in a mumble.
