R’nd stared in confusion at T’bia’s outburst. Was the man he liked really so old they couldn’t be together? Age rarely factored into R’nd’s way of thinking, especially when dragonriders were discussed. Their life spans were extended and aging slowed thanks to the wonderful creatures and someone with twenty turns on him could look the same age. Really, to R’nd, it came down to interactions and how well they got along. One of his best friends, Kerrin, was younger than him and they usually had an easy friendship and understanding of each other. So why was T’bia so concerned about the age of the person he liked?
I believe he’s referring to B’jin and why you want to be with someone so much older than you, Ayyonth replied with a far too chipper tone in his voice as he made himself known in R’nd’s mind. I had been enjoying your time away, Ayyonth, and he’s not that much older! R’nd bristled slightly at his dragon’s interpretation of things and then frowned when he realised Ayyonth may have been onto something. It wouldn’t have been the first time someone had pointed out the difference in ages but R’nd barely noticed and tuned out such comments. Now, however, he had his friend pointing it out and asking why he liked older men.
R’nd moved back to sitting beside T’bia so his back could rest against the edge of the pool as he considered the obviously genuine curiosity. It was asked so innocently that it helped remove the shock and sting of the comment enough that R’nd currently hadn’t moved into flailing and trying to escape the conversation. “I’ve never noticed his age,” he replied truthfully and didn’t think he even knew B’jin’s actual age.You know you’re roughly the same age as Larrikith though, Ayyonth again assisted in the conversation and R’nd scowled inwardly at him and tried to block him out. Go back to harassing someone else, he hissed before doing his best to tune out the fact he had been ignoring. B’jin had Impressed close to the time he had been born and that truly did put some interesting numbers on everything when R’nd also recalled B’jin had already been an established Harper at the time. He shifted uncomfortably and did his best to keep from panicking as his mind tried to do some math by continuing to talk.
“When I first saw him, I had been physically attracted to him but he also embodied everything I thought a dragonrider should be. After finally having a chance to chat with B’jin and spend time with him, I became to truly like the man he was. Age never factored into it.” He suppose he had sort of been conditioned to have an interest in older men as well thanks to his re-education in exile and surroundings. He glanced at T’bia and wondered if he needed to know all of that as well and then decided it could possibly help. He was a bluerider now and interesting circumstances were bound to pop up somewhere down the line and he needed to be comfortable and prepared for anything.
“For quite a while, older was essentially the only option. I was in exile with only my Searchrider, R’jit, and a bond formed between us. At Katila, almost everyone originally was older than me or close to my own age. I never thought being attracted to someone five or twenty turns older than me was odd.” He shifted so he was still sitting beside T’bia but was now facing him full on again and cocked his head to the side with his own curiosity showing through. “Is the person you like older than you, T’bia? Or perhaps the same age and that’s why you think I’m odd?” His smile showed he was teasing and not at all offended if that was the case.
