R’nd should have been suspicious with the wicked grin he was given and the soft kiss that in hindsight was clearly given to soften the blow of what was to come but he was in a good mood and found maybe children’s birthday parties weren’t too horrifying. They were loud, there was no denying that but the games weren’t too bad and they were filled with sweets! R’nd was never one to deny his sweet tooth and the younger helper at the party seemed intent on feeding the treats to him any time he had a hand free and mouth wasn’t already occupied with the last candy.
It was only when Amorandii giggled and asked if he was ready that R’nd started to get a little nervous about what he was getting into. They were all standing in the circle now instead of sitting which meant no innocently passing a gift this time. It also ruled out another round of ‘dragon, dragon, wherry’ which R’nd was grateful for. It had been hard to gauge how fast he should run and when to let a child be caught or to let them catch him. What came next, however, was something the bluerider never would have expected and had no idea how to respond to the birthday girl when she announced they were about to do the Hokey Pokey.
“I don’t even know what a Hokey Pokey is, let alone know how to do it!” A plea was shot towards B’jin who looked far too amused and even a touch smug from where he sat safely out of the way of whatever was about to happen. Amorandii’s cheerful exclamation that it was easy and to just follow along didn’t help calm R’nd any either. To him, a flirty bluerider with a reputation for bed-hopping nightly back before spending so much time with B’jin, the ‘hokey pokey’ sounded a bit like a code word for something children definitely should not have been taking part in or knowing about! He was about to have a panic attack or call an end to everything when everyone started singing and all in unison, they pointed their right leg into the middle of the circle and then put it behind them in some strange dance.
Realizing it was an innocent song and dance to amuse the children, R’nd tried to follow along, one beat behind the group. He didn’t expect the shaking it all about portion and had stuck his foot back out again. When they were told to do the hokey pokey, R’nd just blinked at the group wriggle on the spot before turning themselves about. It was the strangest thing he had seen in quite some time! As they started to repeat everything but this time with the left foot, R’nd laughed softly at the light smack to his arm from Amorandii as punishment for not doing it properly. He nodded and followed the directions much easier than before and managed to wriggle and twirl with the rest of them.
By the end of the song, R’nd was exhausted. Doing the hokey pokey left him just as drained as some of the drills in wing practice. In fact, he was surprised R’nya had never used it when he was wingleader. R’nd could hear R’nya going on about how it would strengthen their bond and bring them more in synch with each other. That was one odd bronzerider, no doubt about that!
Kneeling down, R’nd shook his head at the pout that usually got him to do anything the girl wanted – it was clearly a family trait since he was especially weak to B’jin’s pout. “I should help your daddy bring some of your loot back home. Besides, you don’t need us cramping your style. You should enjoy yourself.” R’nd was still mastering the fine art of parenting and didn’t notice how his words could come across as encouraging the girl to do as she wanted when B’jin wasn’t around. His child was only two! He didn’t have to worry about Benden doing anything crazy and Volfetti hadn’t lectured him yet on pep talks so R’nd was doing his best to use his charm on Amorandii in a toned down manner from what he would normally use when excusing himself from the company of a woman.
He glanced at B’jin and smiled with a nod to indicate he was ready to go. When B’jin got to his feet in acknowledgment to the idea that going home was the best idea of the day, R’nd turned back to Amorandii and made a show of letting her know he was about to share a secret. “Only a few people know this but today is also my birthday. Sharing the day with you has made it extra special to me, so thank you, Lady Amorandii.”
