Rell gave a startled squeak at the flurry of activity suddenly happening around them but soon enough was joining in, first by chirps of encouragement and finally taking wing and leisurely circling with the greens. It was nice making new friends! R’nd watched, torn between surprise and amusement, as his miniature Ayyonth left the safety of his shoulder and started playing. Hopefully Rell would continue to be that bold when B’jin came later on to explore! A little privacy worked wonders on the greenrider and R’nd was devious enough to take advantage of that fact when he could.
At the one-worded explanation, R’nd nodded. He suspected it was because of Aveleth that Z’ia was there, not the weyrlings themselves. Z’ia was a good man – R’nd insisted he didn’t befriend people that weren’t – but they didn’t share an interest in spending time with Candidates or weyrlings. Likely that was due to D’hys’ corruption but if that was all the old bluerider had managed to do to Z’ia since their graduation, then R’nd wasn’t going to fuss over it. D’hys had habits and interesting rumours attached to him that R’nd was glad Z’ia had so far avoided. “Ayyonth is a good support system, in case it’s needed when it actually happens.” Yes, they were outside the Weyr limits and most were in high enough spirits that they could continue to be distracted but R’nd still couldn’t predict how it would all play out, especially when the dragons and flitters at the execution shared what they had learned.
“Anyway, I’m sure someone will approach you now that they know you’re here,” Z’ia was a good-looking man and a fun guy. It would surprise R’nd more if no one had asked Z’ia for a lift back by the end of the excursion. His friend had arrived late and Aveleth was too shy to ask if anyone else needed a ride before but now was different and a quick scanning of the immediate area already showed they were caught up in a few gazes. Of course some could have just been his usual admirers but it seemed some were focused more on Z’ia. He was a generous friend and could share some of the attention!
“After all, there are all those new greenriders that will want to befriend sexy and nice blueriders.” R’nd imagined having a good knowledge of the blueriders and even brownriders made it easier to get through flights. He had yet to ask B’jin but his fear of spitting out the wrong question or wording it poorly kept it to himself. No doubt it would bring up bad memories, given what was already known about B’jin’s past so R’nd opted to keep quiet on the subject.
