A chill went down her spine and Rhaedalyn suddenly felt on edge and nervous. She couldn’t help but look around her, convinced everyone must have been watching her given the intensity of the sensation she was drowning in. Naturally Kahleena was indeed watching her and she looked about ready to burst out of her skin in either excitement or nervousness; maybe both. But that wasn’t what caused the belief that she was the prime target of someone, as if she was being …stalked. No one else besides the other gold candidates were paying her much attention which only left Rhaedalyn confused.
Nervously she glanced around her surroundings a few more times as the fear grew within her. Someone – or something – was definitely keeping a close watch on her and Rhaedalyn couldn’t tell where it was coming from. Was a dragon spying on her for the rider? Oh! What if it was Tyrrisath and she was in trouble with S’kef? She didn’t want his attention on her since he could be rather intimidating when upset. Whatever it was, there was a keen interest in her and Rhaedalyn was afraid. Fear and paranoia began to steal her breath as Rhaedalyn inched closer to hyperventilating until the pain born from the fear grew to be too much and she staggered away from the egg, breaking contact and unknowingly freeing herself from the sensation of being watched.
What had just happened? The nervousness faded away and it didn’t feel like she was about to be pounced from the shadows anymore. All was as it seemed and nothing was amiss. She received a few strange looks due to her panting and a hand clinging to her head though. No doubt she looked like she was about to be sick but Rhaedalyn felt fine, for the most part. She knew she wasn’t going to be physically ill but as she stared at the egg, realization dawned on her that the little lady inside was causing all of that. “I’m sorry,” she whispered on another step back, “I didn’t mean to bother you. I’ll go now. I’m sorry.”
She wanted to flee from the Sands but that would be un-lady like to run away in tears in front of everyone. Besides, she had one friend about to Touch the scary egg and another waiting to hear about it. She had to keep her composure. “She’s not for me, Mevrit,” Rhaedalyn spoke quietly to her friend as she approached and quickly took Mevrit’s hand between hers for a quick squeeze and offered a large smile. “Good luck!” It was meant as a cheer, a wish that the other girl Impressed; not a parting sentiment to warn her of the treatment the egg might give.
Leaving Mevrit and the other girls behind, Rhaedalyn moved a bit further away from the group to stand alone and wait patiently. Muffin was the first to leave his guardian, crooning softly at Kahleena before zipping over to Rhaedalyn into her outstretched arms. Rumour and Whisper followed soon after, no doubt to the relief of R’nya and Xyreith. All three took to comforting her as best as they could while Rhaedalyn smiled at Kahleena. An unspoken promise was given; she would explain everything at another time, not when so many people were around. Besides, she needed time to comprehend everything that had happened.
She had been upset before when she couldn’t Touch any eggs but now Rhaedalyn wondered if that had been the better day and getting to interact with the baby gold was the punishment. It felt like a feline was going to jump out from beneath the sand and grab her!
