When Jada instinctively offered her hand. Talian found himself unconsciously doing the same. When she snapped her hand back, the alarmed healer did the same. He turned away slightly, embarrassed that he was so poor at making such simple gestures, and slowly let his breath escape his chest.
"It's all right. I've had a lot of strange ups and downs, I know," he said, frowning pointedly. "I know I took a lot of my anger out on you, and..." What was he trying to say? He still wasn't confident that they would ever be close friends, but it wasn't even a possibility if he continued to keep himself closed off. He figured the best he could do was be honest. "I don't know, Jada. I'm not very good at making friends. I know you never meant me any harm, though."
His voice softened as he spoke, and his equally soft eyes were downcast. What else could he do? He remained uncertain, but he was trying to move on with his life. In some cases, that had meant letting things go. In other cases, it meant trying to fix them.
