Flit rustled her wings delicately, glittering eyes flashing back to her bonded as he continued to casually move about the room. Flit had no way of understanding what her bonded was doing, just that it was something he deemed very important and well worth his careful attention. He was not nervous, but he was very focused, leading Flit to believe that her position as rear guard was in fact crucial to his success. How exciting!
The dappled green fire lizard purred a bit as she looked back to the door. It was so quiet right now! S'kef had been in and out of the craft hall all day, taking care of various small administrative tasks and keeping his ears tuned to rumors. There had been subtle talk that some of the staff had packed away a few boxes of D'ren's personal belongings during the investigation and neglected to report them to either S'kef or Tsuen. That was interesting.
It took a while to locate the chest, but some casual searching and asking the right questions to the right people yielded results. It was pretty obvious that neither D'ren nor the rebels were protecting it. Rather than some grand secret or hidden conspiracy, it appeared to be nothing more than a box of belongings that had been hidden away and forgotten, though S'kef wondered why it hadn't been placed with the other materials taken from D'ren's hut. Had the bronzerider called for it? If so, why hadn't he recovered it himself now that he was better?
As S'kef pulled the box onto the table and looked it over, he imagined that the simplest answer was probably the best: it had been forgotten. Many unrelated items had been taken from D'ren's hut during the investigation. Some of it made it back and some of it was still laying around. This box had probably only become the subject of rumors because it was locked.
Locked, huh? D'ren kept many of his valuable records and personal letters in unsecured drawers. S'kef wouldn't have given a damn about the lockbox had he not known just how trusting D'ren was. If the bronzerider would leave something so valuable out in the open, what would he bother to lock up? It was interesting, yes, but more than anything else S'kef just wanted to get to it before any bored gossips did!
S'kef didn't have a key, but that didn't matter. He took the small lockbox and started to place it in a bag that he'd brought for that exact purpose when Flit let out a squeak of alarm. S'kef frowned suddenly and turned around. "Who's there?"
