Well Bordtai had to admit that the green dragon and rider both were defiantly putting an effort into encouraging him and Bordtai would have had to be deaf and blind to not realize it. He might be a dimglow with letters, but Bordtai was not deaf or blind and that was brightening him considerably. They were both so confident that he would do just fine on the sands with time. Perhaps he just needed to stop worry about if it would happen and just remember that he had plenty of turns to wait upon the sands. After all, if he impressed now there would be no doubt that he’d have a hard time keeping up with the larger candidates and he’d only slow down his own dragon! Maybe it would be better if his dragon didn’t come right away. Give Bordtai time to eat more vegetables!
Bordtai took what B’jin had to say about ‘quality’ dragonets and chewed on the idea. He certainly couldn’t deny that some dragon’s struck him as ‘quality’ over other ones. It was like comparing Larrikith to Grith. Goodness, he still remembered a few turns ago how the dragon had nearly squished him in her excitement to be helpful. Bordtai couldn’t help but shudder at the memory.
Finding Larrikith’s nose sniffing him with her warm breath, he couldn’t help but be dragged back to the present with a huge smile on his face. He was being searched! And by the best search dragon in the Weyr, there was no doubt in his mind about that. What would she have to say? He watched her eagerly as she seemed to put quite a bit of thought into it.
When she said brown, his jaw had dropped for a moment as he looked from dragon to rider and back to the dragon once more. Had he heard her right? A brown? Really?! Not a green? Not a blue, but a Brown? Tossing an arm into the air, Bordtai couldn’t help but give a small hoot and holler at the news. B’jin was right, perhaps one day he wouldn’t always be the smallest!
When he heard B’jin mention waiting longer as not many browns have been clutched, Bordtai settled back down but the smile was still firmly planted on his face. “If Larrikith says I can impress a brown, then I don’t mind waiting. Maybe it will give me time to grow a little more. And besides, we have new queens! That means there will be more hatchings and more hatchings means more chances for browns.” He said with excitement.
Numbers. He loved numbers and they were beginning to look good. Not only had a queen been a surprise in the last clutch, but the clutch on the sands now held a gold egg too! Sure she had to grow up, but soon there would be more queens flying and clutching. And that was a good thing, since everyone knew that Nirinath seemed to be so inactive when it came to flights – so opposite of her oldest daughter!
