Hate was a strong word in Bordtai’s opinion, but then who was he to judge how strongly the dragon may have felt about the little lizards. There were a few choice weyrbrats he would have associated the strong word with, though not in public or verbally. Easier to keep such things quietly to himself. He was glad to admit that the bullies were finding less and less time to seek him out with everyone beginning to get old enough to stand on the hatching sands. It meant candidate lessons and harder chores. Both of which Bordtai enjoyed because it kept everyone else as busy as it kept him.
Hearing the green rider’s question about what sort of dragon he wanted, Bordtai had his answer instantly – and it wasn’t a typical color that most brats would instantly answer with if they were dreaming of such things. No, Bordtai would have been happy with any color at all.
“A Brave one.” He answered quickly. “A dragon who’s not afraid of the larger dragons. My dragon will be sweet too. Brave and nice and quiet.” He stressed the quiet part with a funny look on his face. “Not like Grith… she talks enough to give anyone a headache.” Ah – that explained the look on the boy’s face.
“You’re a searchrider… or you were when D’ren allowed searches in the North. Do you think I have a chance to impress?” Bordtai’s question was asked slowly. He was, after all, a little afraid that the answer would be an easy and clear ‘no’. After all, that’s what the larger Weyrbrats said – that dimglows didn’t impress. But that didn’t mean Bordtai had completely forgotten how to be hopeful. Maybe… Just maybe if B’jin believed he could impress, then he’d have a real chance.
