Bordtai watched with some slight amusement as the Rider tossed a colorful bag at the little green who caught it and disappeared in an easy enough fashion to tell that they had done such a handoff often enough. On one hand Bordtai thought it a handy trick, but on the other it almost disappointed him to see a dragon (even one as little as the green) to be used as an errand beast. But then again, until Thread returned, what else were they to do? That brought a whole new slew of questions to mind about Thread and the North and what the Dragon’s should or should not be doing, but he pushed them aside – it wasn’t why he’d sought out the adult today.
Watching the man take a seat in the grass and pat the ground in invitation, Bordtai shrugged his shoulders and followed B’jin’s example, crossing his own ankles and dropping a little more roughly to the ground nearby. It was easy to tell by the way the man’s face had seemed to nearly light up in the invitation that he wasn’t bothered by Bordtai coming to him and that gave the young boy some encouragement that he’d at least chose the right adult to pester with questions. His other choice would have been the healer-man, but Talian had a new dragon.
“I guess I am confused.” Bordtai began as he looked around at the people who were passing by in the Square, either from leaving the dismissed class or in common traffic that the area saw daily. “About the firelizards… I thought they had brought the plague to the dragons. Isn’t it dangerous to keep them around the Weyr? What will happen if they bring the plague back?” Turning back to B’jin, the boy didn’t know that the concern in his voice had also seeped into his eyes. After all, if the plague came back… how much lower would that make his chances to make a better life for himself by impressing a dragon?
Like any boy on Pern, Bordtai would enjoy the idea of riding a dragon, but if the plague came back, would there be a dragon left for the small boy?
