Chir had grown so used to seeing Malvayth's eggs on the sands during his visits with the gold dragon that he was wholly unprepared for the anxiety that flooded him when he finally stepped out onto them alongside his peers. Automatically, he looked first to Malvayth and sought out the familiarity of her warm welcomes and proud boasts, but found her far too focused on sussing out concerning behavior to pay him more mind than a mute nod. Without the familiar weight of Chirp on his shoulder as well, he found himself feeling quite alone.
It had been explained to him already from several sources, how a Touching worked. The candidate master had gone over it several times, and Chir wasn't altogether certain if that was because it was his first or because he was assumed to be...of lesser intelligence due to his disability. It wouldn't be the first time someone had made the assumption, so it didn't seem all that far out of the range of possibilities for him.
Chir kept close to the candidates he knew upon entering the sands, preferring to at least have the comfort of them until the last possible moment. He stood among them as if bracing for battle and was caught wholly off-guard by a kiss from Mylorah along his cheek. Chir's face flushed with embarrassment at the gesture even as he watched her offer the same 'good luck' to Sironar. The momentary distraction was almost as unsettling as facing the judgment of Malvayth's progeny! Finally, he stepped away from the pair of them to skirt along the outer edge of the sands, habitually angling himself closer to Malvayth even if he really wasn't here to visit with her.
Knowing well how anxious the dragon was about having so many around her precious prizes, Chir opted to sit alongside one of them and scoot cautiously closer on his bum so Malvayth wouldn't worry about him approaching too quickly. Maybe it took him longer to reach the egg compared to other candidates who were already touching, but it made him feel better to go slow with it all.
Chir took the time to admire the egg beside him now. He could readily fit inside it even without curling up tightly as he would have when Mal first clutched. He hesitated when he lifted his hand and curled his fingers when he realized how badly it was shaking.
This was...he wasn't meant to be here. He was just a nobody from the chilly wilds of Lemos. There were others here who had tried for years to earn the favor of a dragon. What right did he even have to try when he knew so little? Only two months ago, he hadn't even known how to read or write! But he was expected to become a partner for a dragon? The opportunity was more than flattering. It was...awe-inspiring, really. But he still couldn't help but feel like he'd fooled everyone here into thinking he was good enough for this.
But S'far thought so. And Cazan and B'jin. Larrikith, Taith, and Malvayth. Maybe Tiberuth and K'dar, too. Would they be disappointed if he failed?
Today was not a day to even Impress, he had to remind himself. Today was a chance to hear Malvayth's babies, her precious prizes! Holding that reminder close, the boy pressed his hand to the egg's surface.
Egg 13 please!
