Chir glanced at Fancy as he hummed and even tried to mimic the sound with a single toned sound of his own. It was nowhere near as musical in quality and lacked any smooth ups and downs, the ability taken from him early on. But he grinned when the fire lizard peered up at him only to dart out of reach. One day, he vowed, he'd earn the baby dragon's trust! Though Siro had informed him that Fancy wasn't really a baby dragon and seemed determined to remind him often, Chir insisted on considering just Fancy as that simply out of fondness.
At Siro's additional reminder for him not to forget to be ready to feed his new pet, Chir nodded and grabbed a cubed slice of wherry meat at the first crack in the vibrant shell in front of him.
In his time back in the forests around Lemos, the hunter had observed more than a few birds hatching. He expected it to be a slow process after the first pip through, but fire lizards were a whole other species and proved it through the hatching. That first knock and crack had been a test and was shortly followed by a toss of the dragonlet's head that sent a large piece of shell skittering wildly across the desk.
She thrust her head through the opening and immediately let out a series of plaintive chirps and trills to demand her prize for hatching. Chir's grin couldn't grow any wider as he offered the first piece of meat. The little fire lizard ripped it from his fingers viciously and swallowed it down in no time. Already, she was looking for more. Steadily, the boy offered her as much as she could take until her belly was so pudgy that she practically rolled out of the remainder of her egg to sprawl along the warm sand that had served as a nest.
Reaching out a gentle hand without more meat since she'd clearly filled herself close to bursting, Chir waited for the fire lizard to assess him and determine whether she wanted anything to do with him or not. He'd not force her if she decided otherwise. But much to his relief, she sniffed at his fingers and lay her tiny head across them as if to grant him the gift of scratching her chin. More than pleased with the opportunity, he did just that while admiring the pretty green of her hide. The tips of her wings and legs seemed speckled with darker tones as if covered in moss while the rest of her resembled the pods of pea plants.
The little one began chirping again when Chir pulled his hand away as if protesting his removal of her pillow. Heart full, the teen used both hands to gingerly pull her into his lap where she quickly circled and settled to sleep off her enormous meal, apparently satisfied with her accommodations.
Chir lifted his hand to palm away the embarrassing sting of tears as he stared down at her. She was precious! How could anyone not get emotional to have such a beautiful creature choose them? Still, not wanting Siro to poke fun about it, the boy quickly reached over for the rag and applied the oil as his roommate had directed. Watching as Siro did the same for Fancy, he smoothed the oiled rag across her hide to help clean her of lingering film from her egg as well as any shards that clung to her smooth skin.
