Cazelarias had gotten special permission – apparently – to be allowed to sit in the stands behind where Cazan was, and watch what the Weyr was all worked up over. Touching. Typical Weyrs, and their need to shove their hands into everyone’s business. Even unhatched eggs! Shaking off the bizarre irritation that fired up, Cazelarias made himself comfortable on his chosen seat, keeping a wary eye on the great big gold dragon that could so easily eat them all without any real effort. He still didn’t believe that dragons wouldn’t hurt humans. After all, Whers were nasty critters who gave no fucks and he really didn’t see how something bigger couldn’t be meaner.
The fact that she insisted on talking to him didn’t help, and Cazelarias jumped mightily every time her voice swirled through his mind without invitation. Which he would never give her, because he didn’t want anyone swirling around in his mind. It was awfully invasive and he didn’t enjoy it at all. Cazelarias pouted to himself, picking at his thumbnail between his teeth as he watched. So far the dragon hadn’t spotted him – she appeared to be too busy watching the people swarming her eggs like ants on honey.
He watched, confused, as the Candidates would touch an egg, and then move away, their reactions various and sometimes extreme. Cazelarias blinked, confused. There was no point asking his sister what was going on, since she’d Impressed by accident, but he leaned forward anyway, and tapped her on the shoulder. “What’s happening?” he whispered, watching as one youngster seemed to get more than he wanted out of a single egg, and left the area. Others were milling around, taking turns with the gold egg. It was weird, how that one was coloured but the others weren’t.
Dragons were strange, scary creatures and he leaned away from Mal-whatshername, just to put that extra bit of space between them. Not that she was close to him to start with. But better more space than less!
