Rhaedalyn loved Gathers. As a girl, she enjoyed them for the dancing and trying new foods and seeing what the tailors and weavers created. As she got older, she started to lose that love, knowing she was an undesirable that no one would marry and she felt like everyone knew it as if she wore a sign. She wasn’t great at cooking and her stitches were messy and Gathers started to show how horrible she was at everything compared to others. That had changed once again in recent years thanks to her time in Katila, discovering who she really was and what she was capable of. R’nya taking her on as his Weyrwoman also continued to push her confidence and now she was able to walk around a Gather relaxed and able to enjoy herself once more.
That’s what she was doing now as they had decided they needed and deserved the break after the months of helping to ready Benden Weyr and being sandbound for some of it. Rhaedalyn merrily worked her way through the stands with R’nya at her side and their daughters back at Fort. They were in the crèche where she sometimes liked to keep them to help them socialize with other kids but that day was also so Quinvalis and Aederyn could have some free time as well. Aederyn had been such a gift when D’hys mentioned her circumstances and he wanted to get around the Healer Hall rule. That had been curious but he didn’t seem to show any interest in her romantically—though Rhaedalyn confessed he was kind of hard to read to begin with—but she jumped on finding a way to keep the young woman in the Weyr and thought about an extra set of hands with the girls from time to time. It was working out wonderfully and it was nice to see Quinvalis have someone else to talk to again.
A squeal of delight had Whisper taking off from her shoulder as Rhaedalyn turned around to see Madiquel flying at her. She laughed as the girl wrapped her up in a hug that was returned with equal amounts of enthusiasm. Madiquel was partly to thank for Aederyn’s new job since the young greenrider had accidentally Impressed during her healing studies. She knew a dragon hadn’t been in Madiquel’s grand plan but it was so good to see her smiling and happy.
“You’re so very welcome!” It was a late gift but she had been busy and there was also the threat that Zezeth wouldn’t live long given her rough start at life. Rhaedalyn hadn’t wanted to send anything too soon only to find out the dragon had perished or would be too sickly for her life to fly. It wouldn’t seem appropriate for a congratulatory gift in either case. Still, Zezeth was a bit fragile but whole and seemed to be progressing normally and with a Gather coming up, Rhaedalyn knew she had to find Madiquel the perfect dress.
Truthfully, Madiquel was like another daughter to her. Her mother had died in the landslide and while Jajojin did the best he could for her, a womanly touch was sometimes still needed and Rhaedalyn jumped in to help fill that void. Just like she may have helped push Madiquel along in her obvious crush on D’hys. She had purposely sent the bluerider to deliver the gift to help encourage the girl to speak to him some more.
Taking Madiquel’s hand, Rhaedalyn led them off the path of stalls so they wouldn’t be in the way while the talked. They kept in touch via letter but it wasn’t the same as in person. “You are absolutely beautiful, Madi! And not just the dress. You’re glowing with happiness and that makes me so happy… and curious. It can’t just be getting out of the Weyr. Do you have plans for the day?”
