Appearance

Eyes: Brown, trusting / expressive brows she keeps carefully shaped and delicate.

Hair: Deep brown with a hint of wave to it. Was worn longer when she Impressed but in recent years she has cut it to chin length to make it more manageable.

General Appearance:
Slender and willowy figure, not given to sloth. She pays strict attention to what she eats and runs frequently to keep herself in shape. She is very conscious of impressions, working hard to keep herself tidy and refined as befits her rank.

She has an oval face, aristocratic bone structure (with cheekbones you could cut yourself on), expressive brows, and a long Grecian nose. Usually given to lofty facial expressions, she does occasionally slip and let herself grin.

Dressing Style: She prefers crisp clothes of fine woven or soft fabrics, though she keeps around several old shirts and a pair of trousers she filched from a friend for days she needs a little comfort.

Personality

General Character Traits: A little too focused on what others think of her, though it usually comes out as snobbery or exasperation. She’s very opinionated, though she does her best to bite her tongue when she thinks it matters. She’s used to hiding her sexuality in the crafthall, so coming to the Weyr was a revelation. She’s still circumspect, knowing that as a goldrider there are Expectations, but she’s also enjoying her newfound freedoms. She values discretion in her partners and has been carefully cultivating connections.

Habits/Mannerisms: She’s prone to exasperated sighs and eye rolls and she can’t stand to have her hands idle, whether she’s spinning or just fidgeting with a necklace.

Opinions: These can be kept short and sweet; a sentence will suffice.
Threadfall Theory: Privately she doubts it will ever come back, but she’s clever enough to play that opinion close to the vest when around other dragonriders.

Background Story:
714 & 0 turns:
730 & 16 turns: Helyna marries Vondal, a Jr. Journeyman at the Weavercraft hall and a dear friend of several years. It helps them both hide their true preferences behind a veil of respectability.
731 & 17 turns: Vondal dies of a fever while on circuit and she is devastated at the loss of her friend. A few other marriage offers come her way, but she turns them all down with the excuse of grief and focuses on her craft instead to attempt apprenticeship.
732 & 18 turns: Helyna applies and is accepted as a Jr. Apprentice to the craft, throwing herself into work to drown out her pain. Her wit becomes sharper and more scathing than it had been without him around to temper it, and she is less concerned now with seeming opinionated or haughty.
735 & 21 turns: Helyna is Searched, and has mixed feelings about leaving the crafthall. She has made something of herself there in recent years, but also finds memories around every corner. At the same time, everyone has heard the rumors about dragonriders, and she is curious if the “loose morality” of the Weyr life is actually true; anything is better than keeping up pretenses.

738 & 24 turns: Iliyith’s first flight brings along some unexpected baggage, but she can’t bring herself to between like some of the others advise. She’s not an involved mother, but her son does make her smile when she visits him in the creche.
739 & 25 turns: Fires break out at Ista and it rattles her careful veneer of control. To get that feeling back she throws herself into organization, helping to arrange supplies of bandages and other essentials, but she hates it when she's assigned to help uncover victims. The sight of the burns unnerves her and it feels like it takes months to get rid of the smell of smoke once everything is finally extinguished.
740 & 26 turns: Helyna is appalled by the lack of control surrounding Thallyath's maiden flight. That a blue should be able to fly a gold is simply ridiculous, and she's horrified when she hears rumors about the disastrous Touching--let alone the Hatching. When it's announced that Casa will be taking over as Ista's Weyrwoman when Benden reopens, Helyna is furious. Still, she manages to bite her tongue, knowing that loose talk could utterly ruin the already tenuous reputation of the Weyrs in the wake of the return North. Every scrap of respect is necessary if Thread actually does come back and they truly will need to rely on the Holds and Crafts.

Helyna stormed into her rooms after hearing the news. Honestly, it was ridiculous. Just because she was technically a senior rider didn’t mean that brat had any notion of how to run a Weyr.

Don’t tell me you wanted it? Helyna scowled as her dragon spoke, pointing out something she hadn’t really considered. “I don’t want it.” Iliyith snorted derisively at the evasion. “Fine, part of me does; just not now,” she admitted, walking through to where her gold lounged in the sun and scratching her eye ridge affectionately.

“Mostly I just think she’s too inexperienced. Has she shown any aptitude at managing the daily tasks expected of her? She’s been cossetted her whole life.” Helyna didn’t know anything about the hardships those in Katilia faced, and dismissed them off-hand since she had no framework for them. The girl hadn’t fought her way to Jr. Apprenticeship in an antagonistic and misogynistic Craft like Helyna had, and if rumors were true was more interested in enjoying herself than applying effort. Therefore, she must have led a blessed life.

Why didn’t you speak up? Iliyith asked. The gold couldn’t understand how anyone could stand these subtleties. Why didn’t humans just say what they meant? “It isn’t the right time. But I’ll be damned if I’m not tossing my hat in for the next chance.”

There are others ahead of us. Helyna laughed. “So there are. But I’m fine with playing a long game if you are, darling.”
