Trelanvor jogged toward the hatching circuit, ignoring the muddy splashed that greeted every foot fall. It almost seemed as if it had always been damp and muddy. Dry, sunny days without rain were some distant memory. Being wet was becoming normal, as was having to change into a dry shirt or set of shoes half way through the day. He'd taken to going around barefoot since it meant not having to wait for his footwear to dry. Today though was special and he'd dragged a pair of boots out from beneath his bed and found one of his nicer shirts to wear. It was just the touching, but it didn't seem right to go looking like a drowned wherry.
He was excited about today. He could feel it in the pace of his heartbeat and the bouncy sensation in his limbs. It was tempered though by his lack of success in the past and what had happened during the last hatching. He didn't envy the girls who would have to touch the Gold egg today. Few were every anything but careful during a touching, but he was going to be especially gentle. Trel slowed as he neared the group gathering near B'jin.
The clutch had been shifted after part of the sand had flooded. It had been quite a task with such a large clutch. Trelanvor wondered if moving eggs could damage them in some way. He hated to think that there might be a repeat of what had happened during the last hatching when the Gold egg had disintegrated. He looked over the varied clutch of twenty-seven eggs. Some large, some small, each unique in size, shape, or color. He bounced gently from one foot to another in anticipation. His dragon could be waiting for him out there. Very soon he could be going from candidate to weyrling! Maybe he should have felt more jaded because of his failures in the past. This was a new clutch and he could stop himself from hoping this just might be the clutch that changed everything for him.
