Talian laughed. "Oh no. Father was...the least sensitive, least imaginative person I've ever known. I take more after my mother..." Then again, he only half-resembled her. His seemingly inborn gentleness was more due to nurture than nature. "Father just always kept me very busy. I went to special classes when I was little, you see. He didn't believe in wasting time on things like harpers' yarns."
Lymselia's stories about fire lizards inspired some curiosity in him. He craned his neck forward and nodded. "Oh! Oh yes...I've heard them mentioned in passing before, but beyond being tiny dragons, I don't really know much else. I still don't know that much about dragons, either." In all honesty, he was resisting. He didn't want one. She liked to think that if he minimized his contact with them and denied their existence in whatever ways he could, they would stop bothering him. Maybe the hatchlings would be like canines and sense that he didn't like them! That would be convenient.
Still, he had to admit..."That would be pretty neat."
He paused and looked away, taking a moment to breathe deeply and enjoy the scent of summer. A light breeze had picked up, and it still wasn't quite hot. He realized then, in that still moment, that he'd been talking to this girl for quite some time now. He was talking more than usual, more than he ever had at home...and more than he had since his arrival, probably his entire stay combined!
It made him feel better. Time to talk some more.
"Exchange stories? All right," he said softly. "...You first!"
