Oahvakeen had worried that she would be hungry and they'd have to stop to hunt for food or forage. In his primitive, non-paternal mind, if children didn't eat when they were hungry, they would die. If they got a cut or a bruise, they would disintegrate. Heavens help them if they broke a bone.
"That's good.", he breathed his sigh of relief audibly and visibly. He picked up his lantern and snuffed their campfire out with his booted foot.
"Let's just follow the path back home, then.", he pointed towards the Weyr, and waited for Flora to join him. After a thought, he held out his hand to her, a gesture to take her by the hand and lead her back home. It seemed like the right thing to do. And for once, the idea of holding a child's hand, talking to a child, or interacting with a child, didn't seem nearly so bad.
