R’nd would have been more than happy to fall asleep where he stood as well with the way B’jin rested against him and the quiet that took over the Sands as they waited for the rest of the clutch to hopefully break shell. He was excited about the event and couldn’t wait to see the rest of the dragonets and new pairs but he was tired and being used as a pillow – even vertically as they were – had started to become somewhere down the line a comfort thing where it relaxed him and it felt oddly right to have the greenrider tucked against him. Thankfully his mind wasn’t entirely turned on to catch the deeper meaning behind that revelation and R’nd continued to exist in blissful obliviousness.
When B’jin started to slink down, clearly having given in to the wonderful urge to sleep, R’nd briefly wrapped his arms around his lover’s waist to hold him upright. All too soon, however, it became clear that’s what he was doing and he had no choice but to let the greenrider slide gracefully down to sit on the hot sand and R’nd’s toes. He didn’t need feeling in them anyway! The look he received when B’jin woke was somewhat precious and R’nd gave a sheepish grin in response. He’d explain later how B’jin looked like a ragdoll and sitting was the lesser of two evils.
No sooner had B’jin settled back in against his chest and R’nd had made a grab for hands again did Larrikith start her shrieking of joy. Hands were pulled away to copy B’jin in covering his ears; something both men knew was pointless since the voice was inside their minds and couldn’t be shut off with the force Larrikith hit them with. “Thanks, Larrikith!” R’nd yelled in time with B’jin’s order for the dragon to stop. If he ever needed a reason to regret letting the spunky dragon hang out in his mind, that would have been it though the bluerider suspected from reactions around him that it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
Once the ringing stopped, Larrikith’s words sank in and R’nd sought out Talian and saw him hugging a dragonet and getting to his feet. That was good, right? No, bad? Talian was a Healer and his knowledge invaluable, that was something most would agree on. R’nd remembered their awkward chat in the Bathhouse and how he had told Talian exactly that and he wished the younger man could avoid Standing and be their needed Healer. But any Impression was a good one, especially with their low population. R’nd was a man that believed things happened for a reason. He hadn’t Impressed at his first clutch in Benden because the plague hit soon after. The exile made him stronger as a person and more open in other areas. Impressing Ayyonth completed him and made all the trials before worth it. Even B’jin’s Impression happened for a reason and like R’nd had tried to point out once in a silly moment of sappy flirting, if Larrikith hadn’t chosen B’jin, they wouldn’t have met and wouldn’t be canoodling on the Sands as dragonets burst free of their shells.
So R’nd believed there was something to Talian Impressing as well. He didn’t know yet, he didn’t even know the colour as the Healer made his way slowly towards them, but R’nd knew they would find out soon enough. For now, he’d take the colour of the dragon and when he could see clearly, his jaw dropped in disbelief. Brown? B’jin would already be losing his mind over the Impression in general but now he had to see a brown dragon hanging around his son’s ankles. It was going to be hard adjusting over the next few months, R’nd had no doubt. Like with most of the weyrlings, Talian addressed B’jin but B’jin was still a bit dazed and was suddenly barking out orders to the group at large and crushing R’nd’s hand as it was captured in a death grip. He said nothing but only gave a small smile to the new brown weyrling. “Congratulations, Talian. Let us know if you need anything else and we’ll… B’jin will talk with you more after everyone’s slept.” They may have been on better terms but R’nd didn’t want to assume they were best of buddies or that he was even seen as a minion to the Weyrlingmaster and should be spoken to.
R’nd barely managed to brush a kiss against B’jin’s neck before S’kef and J’ver slithered up to them and made their dig at Talian. Any time the brownrider was near was enough to make R’nd see red but when he addressed B’jin in any way was enough to make him wish for a rematch from their last fight. He stayed still though, only tensing in body and then placing a hand on B’jin’s hip when he saw the greenrider take up a protective stance. That was something he adored about the greenrider and that they had in common. Both of them would put themselves in the line of fire to protect those important to them.
Once again his efforts to draw B’jin in close, this time for a little post-S’kef comforting, were blocked as B’jin moved to help Talian up and then went to the kid that was going to be a nightmare to deal with. R’nd rarely did any sort of betting but he didn’t need to be a bookie to know that kid hadn’t been marked down to Impress. Browns flying blues, indeed! Still, he was a good kid and a dragon also saw the potential in him so there wasn’t a chance R’nd could turn his back on the kid. When B’jin gave him a look over the boy’s head, all he could do was smile and nod in understanding before crouching down to take over helping him so they could all get to bed a few minutes sooner. And bed was definitely his current goal!
