Talian made sure he cleaned the table well before taking a seat. It was quiet and still. Rather than return to his candidate quarters and risk discovery by his cavorting classmates, he decided to go somewhere that most closely resembled home; the healing hall. It was dark and silent there. He’d situated himself in his office, kept company only by a single glowbasket and a mug of hot klah hastily brewed in the kitchens.
His emotions had sent him wandering that night. Now, it was over. What a fitting final stop, surrounded by medical pamphlets and surgical tools!
He blew delicately on the klah, waiting for it to cool off just the slightest bit before taking his first sip. It tasted wonderful. Ah, how easy this would be. It was so easy that he could hardly believe that the first and most difficult step was already done, and done practically out of habit alone! He marveled at himself for a moment before turning his chair around to look out the window, the back of his chair leaned against his desk.
The stars were bright. He let out a long sigh, allowing his muscles to relax and his legs to stretch out as he took another sip. There was no reason to hurry. He found his overactive mind oddly quelled. The treasonous part of his mind was satisfied, thrilled to see Talian finally dancing with the eyes in the dark. There was no turning back now.
Talian was a healer, though. He knew it wouldn’t come easy. Only foolish romantics thought this was an artistic or pleasant process. He resolved to enjoy this little stretch of peace before the symptoms showed themselves. That would be the real test, and in spite of himself, he looked forward to it.
I'll be putting up an OPEN one with him as an aftermath thread. Oh boy!
