“You clean up well,” Valerian replied the instant Jada had his attention. He realised as he spoke that he hadn’t complimented Lymsleia when she approached for a dance and could easily imagine his mother and sisters glaring at him for such an impolite moment. Not that he’d call what he told Jada a compliment. He simply pointed out that even she could make herself presentable if she tried. Still, to save face before some random, cranky, old woman wandered by and smacked him one for being rude, Valerian turned to Lymsleia to include her in his follow up statement, “all the ladies look lovely tonight. Red suits you, Lymsleia.”
Feeling like he had covered himself well enough and avoided any yelling, Valerian then wondered if he could cut out and return to sitting on the sidelines, enjoying his people watching. No, he could see that earning a cheek pinching from Jada and that was another thing he wanted to avoid that night. He got those enough during the turn that he didn’t want to close it out with one as well. So he fell silent to let the women talk though he kept stealing glances toward the stage and gave a curious expression as the crazy old lady jumped up to steal B’jin away. That could be an interesting show.
