Kelian was always excited about hatchings, no matter how many she attended or how many times she had been left standing. And by the shell had she been left standing. A lot. Of course, so had her father's weyrmate, Vaeyla, and just look at the beautiful golden Queen she had Impressed! Thinking of that had always given Kelian the extra boost she needed if ever she felt disheartened on the hatching sands.
However, with everything that had recently happened in Benden, and the other weyrs, and even as cheerful as she tried to be, it was hard to combat the constantly sinking feeling in her gut. Not so much that she wouldn't Impress a dragon of her own, just a sinking feeling in general. With so many deaths, both human and dragon, so much sickness, her father included, and so much fear running rampant it was hard to stay positive. And yet, they had to, didn't they? There were eggs hardening on the sands, with precious baby dragons in them that needed to find their mates. They couldn't let them down, couldn't allow them to go Between! So, when the candidates were called to go to the sands for the touching, Kelian swallowed her uncertainty and fears and followed along with the rest of the candidates.
Once on the hot sands she listened and did as they were bade. She offered a warm but respectful greeting to both Mizeath and Ameris before letting her eyes wander the large clutch of eggs, settling finally on the gold egg that was set off by itself. She gazed at it longingly for a long while before she moved off to wander through the other eggs first, allowing the other girls the chance to touch the gold egg first. Sure she could have rushed over to the gold egg too but she felt that would have been selfish of her. She couldn't tell you why it seemed selfish to her, it just did for some reason, so she waited. Instead she found herself, after carefully and thoughtfully wandering through the clutch, standing before a random egg that looked much like its fellows. The egg before her was the same greenish mottled as the others but had several lumps and bumps, apparently an active little dragon resided inside.
Kel gave a small smile and lifted her hand and reached out to touch the shell, hesitating just a moment while she cleared her mind of any lingering dark or sad thoughts. She wanted happy thoughts in her mind while she tried to connect with the baby in the egg. She thought of sunny days in the weyr bowl, looking after her little brothers, and helping bathe her family member's dragons, things that made her happy. She pushed all the darkness and sadness in her mind as far away as she could, the babies shouldn't be burdened with those thoughts at all unless they wanted to know she supposed, then she gently laid her palm against the warm, hardened shell and said, "Good morning little one!", and waited to see if she would earn a response.
