2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! N’mor grunted as Rhezalth set down on the ledge, jolted from his thoughts by the dragon’s unusually abrupt landing. As Rhezalth apologised, N’mor patted him absently on the neck before removing the riding straps, flicking at the clasps and winding the leather pieces up before putting them away. Rhezalth sighed, and moved off to curl up with Varralath in exhaustion. N’mor made sure the last of the straps were put away, then made his way into the weyr proper, scrubbing his hand over his face as he went. “Zinnie?” he called curiously, wondering through the main room and not seeing the bluerider. His dragon was home, so he assumed the rider was nearby, but he could have been anywhere. Apparently, that included not being home.

Moving to the bedroom, N’mor kicked off his boots and flopped onto the bed, grunting again as he fell onto his stomach, puffing out a long sigh as he relaxed into the blankets, and quickly fell asleep, though it was light and uneasy. N’mor woke with a start a couple of hours later when the bed shifted, eyes wide for a few moments before Z’rin’s face flittered through his confused and sleepy brain, and N’mor smiled gently at the bluerider, shifting to bat at him half-heartedly in protest. “Where have – you been?” N’mor asked, pausing part way to yawn hugely.

Rolling his shoulders, N’mor shuffled to sit up, tossing a pillow behind his back so he could lean against the headboard of the bed, crossing his legs at the ankles and tilting his head at Z’rin. “I thought this would be a lot less exhausting,” he admitted, waving his hand absently but mostly talking about his recent promotion to Weyr Second. Which he’d always wanted to angle for, but he’d honestly thought it would come after being a Wingsecond, and then a Wingleader. Time to grow and learn more, rather than oh hey, look at all these murders! One of which had been the previous Weyrsecond. N’mor wasn’t stressed about that at all.

N’mor smiled when Z’rin rested his head on N’mor’s lap, running his fingers lightly through the dark locks. “Dad’s doing okay,” he said lightly, since that had been his latest adventure before coming home. “I don’t think he believes anyone about his voice.” Typical B’jin, and his stubbornness. N’mor just worried about what the greenrider would do when he was proven wrong, regardless of how stubborn he was being. At least the pair hadn’t had a fight or something before B’jin was attacked. Knowing his father it had been some sappy moment, which was probably… better? But still gross.

“So,” N’mor said, rolling back to his sleepy question of where Z’rin had been when he’d gotten home “Did you go out for lunch?”

Z'rin smiled as N'mor yawned, showing just how tired he still was. He was about to encourage his mate to rest a bit longer but N'mor was already sitting up. At least he admitted to how exhausted he was, which only kept the smile in place. N'mor was fiercely private and would only admit such a weakness to a very small handful of people. Being one of those people helped to reaffirm what he meant to the bronzerider, easing some of the fears that sometimes still plagued him.

It was also nice that N'mor's work ethic was already being recognised by the Weyrleader. Sure, it was under less than ideal situations but out of those available to choose from, M'ris had selected N'mor. It also helped make the move from Ista all the more worth it. Z'rin would have been happy staying in Ista and being the personal ferryman to the Lord Holder and his close family but he'd given it up so N'mor could have the freedom he needed, the fresh start so to speak, away from Casa as Weyrwoman and memories of a missed love. Z'rin wasn't stupid, not all the time anyway. He knew T'ryn and N'mor had once had feelings for each other and sometimes the realization that he was just a bluerider with perfect timing for a rebounding heart plagued him but he'd foolishly still fallen for N'mor and wanted the man to be happy. So he packed up his life and relocated.

He crawled onto the bed, settling his head in N'mor's lap, though the smile finally faded at the mention of B'jin. "I don't think any of us want to believe it." B'jin was known for his singing and Z'rin had happily danced to the greenrider's songs and cheered the man on more times than he could count. His early days in Katila had been filled with fear and shying away from most people but B'jin was one of the harpers that liked to sing at night and young Zarindin had always inched closer to the crowd to enjoy the music. In a way, B'jin was as much of a help as some of the 'brats like Indivara and the twins for easing his tension and helping him feel a part of the Weyr. "When he's up for more visitors, I'd like to go with you."

They fell silent for a long moment and if it wasn't for the way fingers still played in his hair, Z'rin would have thought N'mor had fallen asleep again. The question helped to further prove his mate was still somewhat awake and the smile returned. "I went down to the dining cavern for lunch and then stopped in to see Vondal. He's doing well but still just too skinny." Vondal seemed like a nice enough guy, even if N'mor hadn't been sure what to make of the man upon their first meeting. But Z'rin felt he had things in common with the lace-making sailor with amnesia of sorts. They were both in an awkward position when it came to Helyna and N'mor so if nothing else, they could bond over that and keep each other company when they weren't needed because the shiny riders were playing perfect mates.

“I think he’d like that,” N’mor said when Z’rin mentioned going to see B’jin, a smile in his voice. Peacock that B’jin was, he would no doubt enjoy being fawned over by his son’s mate, even if he was still being stubborn about his voice not coming back. N’mor didn’t want to believe that his father would be voiceless for the rest of his life, but he did believe the healers and had no reason to doubt them, especially when he’d been told all about the injury B’jin had been subjected to. N’mor had no idea what kind of a monster could be responsible for such a thing, but they had better hope he didn’t get his hand on them.

N’mor’s fingers in Z’rin’s hair paused for a few moments at the mention of Vondal, and his nose scrunched up a little. He still had no real idea what to make of Helyna’s husband; he didn’t particularly like the man, but he also didn’t dislike him. At least, not yet. He was holding out on judging him until he got a better idea of what kind of a person he was. But N’mor didn’t like most people, as a rule, and didn’t expect to like the strange man either. He was weird, and not in a quirky and endearing way that some people were. No, he was just plain odd and N’mor disliked interacting with him.

“How is he doing?” N’mor asked wryly, thinking of the man’s memory issues, before returning his attention to Z’rin’s hair with idle brushes of his fingers, combing the locks and twirling them around his fingers, though not enough to cause tangles. Z’rin had lovely silky hair, and N’mor loved the feel of it… He should probably check in on Helyna at some point; not that the goldrider wasn’t completely capable of taking care of herself, but with all the mayhem going on, it would probably be a good idea. Of course, that might put a target on himself, or even Z’rin, or perhaps highlight Helyna, but those were risks he would have to take to do his part, and N’mor sighed softly, partly in exhaustion and partly from exasperation of the bastard who was making his life so difficult.

That brought N’mor to another topic he had been meaning to bring up – not directly, but because all the mayhem was making it pretty badly timed – and he paused in his fidgeting with Z’rin’s hair to run his hand lightly along Z’rin’s jawline, and down to rest on his chest. “The timing is pretty bad, all things considered, but I had an idea I wanted to get your opinion on.” N’mor paused, clearly hesitating, and shifted a little so he could stare down at Z’rin with furrowed eyebrows but excited eyes.

Z'rin smiled at his mate. He saw the reaction to mentioning Vondal but also saw how N'mor was trying to be open-minded and put in some measure of interest. N'mor was a very private person and didn't like or trust many--something Z'rin had learned firsthand since the day they met on the beach in the rain. While he would like the bronzerider to befriend Vondal, it wasn't expected and he wasn't going to push the former sailor on him either. Still, Z'rin recapped their brief time together, giving an update on Vondal's health and the plans they were hoping to make soon to get together again.

He frowned when N'mor seemed to grow distracted and the hand traced a path down to rest on his chest. Z'rin wasn't sure what was about to come but he worried that maybe he had missed hearing about another attack. It couldn't have been anyone close to them or N'mor would have led with that but he still tensed, waiting for the shoe to drop. But it didn't and Z'rin's brows furrowed slightly in confusion at the mentioning of an idea. It didn't seem like it would be something he'd hate given the way N'mor's eyes lit up but Z'rin couldn't even begin to guess what the idea would be and gave a little laugh.

"Well, out with it then. I have yet to master the art of reading your mind to this extent."

N’mor snorted in amusement at Z’rin’s demand, scrunching his nose up and sticking out his tongue in a childish pose, before leaning down to kiss his lover quickly, for the strange scrunching wasn’t particularly comfortable. “Dork,” N’mor said, amused, and shook his head. His fingers went back to playing with Z’rin’s hair, and N’mor chewed on his bottom lip for a few moments as he ordered his thoughts. His heart was thumping, and he wasn’t sure if it was excitement or anticipation. It truly wasn’t the best of timing, but the idea had really taken root in N’mor’s mind, and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to put it aside… Unless Z’rin thought it was terrible? N’mor paused for a moment, but knew he was getting ahead of himself; he had to tell the bluerider, before Z’rin could take a stand one way or the other.

“Um,” a very eloquent start. “Weeell,” N’mor dragged the word out, uncharacteristically nervous as he was suddenly aware of all the ways Z’rin might dislike his idea, bring it crashing down around him, and crush a dream N’mor hadn’t realised he’d actually had. But… Maybe not? It was, after all, Z’rin, and Z’rin was an excellent man (even if he was a bluerider) and he was a wonderful father and he was great with Vondlyn too. “I, um, I wanted to talk to you about talking to Helyna, about maybe forgoing between next time our dragons Fly...” Chewing on his bottom lip again, N’mor gave Z’rin some serious side eye before continuing lowly. “Does that sound… okay?”

When N’mor finally found his words, Z’rin hadn’t been expecting them and what they implied and the shock showed. Of course he was thrilled that his younger lover was starting to feel a stronger urge to raise a family together as it was something Z’rin had wanted for a while but could tell it was best not to press it. He smiled at N’mor and nodded, “of course it does.”

It didn’t, though.

Z’rin hated the idea. There was so much wrong with it. Iliyith Flew about every eighteen months and was currently on the Sands so it would be over two years before another child. That was also assuming Helyna fell pregnant from the one time together. Just because she did on their first Flight didn’t mean it would happen again so it could be closer to four years or more. Not to mention Z’rin didn’t trust Helyna. She had kept Vondlyn from his father and likely would have continued to do so except she no doubt had some selfish reason for sharing; likely overworked and exhausted. He would also bet everything he owned that Helyna wouldn’t let them raise the child. Her own mate loved kids and it was easy to say how bad it would be to keep the children from each other so they should be raised together—by her and Tala.

The easier and quicker choice was for Z’rin to take up with a woman that wouldn’t mind having a child for them to raise and she could be as involved as little or as much as she wanted. Of course they could also take one of the unwanted kids from the crèche.

But he didn’t say any of that. N’mor was excited about his idea and Z’rin would support him and hope the goldrider wasn’t a complete heartless bitch and it would work out. “It certainly doesn’t hurt to speak with her about it.”

“It does?” N’mor’s face lit up, eyes bright as he smiled down at Z’rin, clearly delighted by this move in the right direction. He leaned down, pressing a quick if slightly awkward kiss to the tip of Z’rin’s nose. “I’ll talk to her when I see her next.” Or there abouts; when it was an appropriate topic to bring up, at least. He was sure that she would have already travelled between since the most recent Flight, though N’mor had forgotten to ask her if she wanted the trip; it wasn’t exactly a risk he had to consider on a regular basis and since she hadn’t asked him, well, she had probably used Tala to get the quick trip done. Which meant the next Flight (if she agreed to try), which was a long way off – assuming the dragon’s continued to play nice and tangled then, too.

“It’s a long way off,” N’mor said slowly, “and she might not agree.” He hadn’t gotten the impression she was thrilled to have ended up with Vondlyn, though she was also extremely possessive of the little boy. N’mor loved his son dearly, but prying him away from his mother was a work of great effort and sacrifice at times. As much as he loved the idea of another child, he wasn’t sure Helyna would be up for it, either because she didn’t want to do the pregnant thing, or because she wouldn’t be able to let the child go. N’mor wouldn’t hold that against her – so long as she didn’t change her mind at the last moment. But it did mean he had to consider other options, which was another area Z’rin came into: his mate’s body didn’t stop functioning at the mention of lady bits.

N’mor smirked slightly, and tilted his head at Z’rin. “And even if she does, she might not ever get pregnant.” N’mor certainly didn’t have what it took to tumble with the woman outside of dragonlust. She was nice enough, but she was too… female… for his tastes, and he was far too disgusted by what they got up to when their minds were their dragons’ to ever go for seconds. Which would not help their chances of a pregnant Helyna. The only thing worse than a bluerider, was a woman! (Blueriding women were a whole other category!)

Brushing Z’rin’s hair back from his face, N’mor arched an eyebrow at his mate. “You might have to take one for the team,” N’mor said very solemnly, though his eyes sparkled with mischief. “Do you think we could upgrade our weyr if we ended up with two full time and two part-time kids?”

Z’rin laughed at the teasing and the question about a larger weyr. They already had one with two bedrooms because N’mor had used his bronzerider status to his advantage when they relocated and Z’rin figured they could make it work if they ended up with four children one day if needed. But, N’mor also had a shiny new title to match his shiny dragon. “You’re Weyrsecond now, love. I’m sure there’s already a larger weyr with your name on it.” With all of the chaos lately with the attacks and M’ris… not his usual self, it was easy to forget that N’mor probably had a nicer weyr waiting for him.

“And honestly, I’ve thought about all the angles that we could approach having kids at before.” Z’rin stated slowly as he sat up and turned to face N’mor. Z’rin loved his daughter and adored Vondlyn and the way his mate was with both kids. There had been a hope N’mor would one day be ready for a child of his own, or another now that they knew about Vondlyn, and Z’rin had wanted to be ready with options.

“Relying on Helyna has a lot of ifs and risks and a long wait time, like you said. I don’t mind at all if we find a woman for me to be with.” It was kind of weird thinking about approaching women with his mate and asking them if they would assist in the endeavour but Z’rin knew they wouldn’t be the first or last pair to do that. “Would you have anyone in mind if we did that?” He was about to suggest Mylorah since she seemed to be one of the only women N’mor seemed to like but Z’rin wasn’t confident she would do it. And now he was feeling even weirder about it and chuckled softly. “We’ll find someone when it’s right.”

N’mor blinked at Z’rin’s comment, opening his mouth with a little ‘oh’ of surprised realisation before he snorted. With the way M’ris had been recently, N’mor figured he could probably get away with requesting two weyrs if he did it right, and the Weyrleader would be too far gone in drink to realise what was happening. Of course, that was also likely why nothing had been said about any available upgrades if N’mor wanted it. He’d been rather busy scouting for the drunkard lately, and the idea honestly hadn’t crossed his mind. Not that there was any reason to rush into moving weyrs. N’mor quite liked the one they were in now, and it had room for Zararin, and she didn’t mind sharing with the toddler Vondlyn though that would likely change in coming years. Zararin would soon be a teenager and much too grown up to share with a baby, a boy or her brother – never mind a combination of all three in one sturdy little Vondlyn.

“Of course you have,” N’mor teased, though the fact caused a giddy feeling to warm his belly; he loved Z’rin more than he’d thought possible, but was also astounded every time he was reminded just how fond of him the bluerider was. The fact that he’d been thinking about kids, but waiting for N’mor to bring it up… N’mor leaned forward now that Z’rin was sitting up, and pressed a warm, lingering kiss to his mate’s lips. Withdrawing, N’mor considered the question Z’rin had posed before the kiss, and shook his head slightly. “No,” he said honestly, before smirking playfully. “Someone attractive. I’m not raising ugly babies.”

Leaning forward, N’mor shifted carefully until he was straddling Z’rin’s lap, wrapping his legs lazily around the blurider’s hips, crossing his feet at the ankles and his arm looped around Z’rin’s neck as he smirked thoughtfully at his mate, head tilted slightly to one side. “When will it be right?” he asked, tone playful, but genuinely curious about Z’rin’s thoughts on that part of the topic. Even if they went hunting that very evening for a woman for Z’rin to play dirty with, it could be months or even years before they came home with a babe in arms. Which N’mor found to be kind of disheartening; he didn’t want to wait years, which was why he wasn’t going to rely solely on Helyna agreeing to his request.
