Madiquel trotted through the Weyr, the note clutched tightly in her fist, and her emotions in a rolling storm of grief, betrayal, and anger. It had taken until that morning for someone to reach out to her about the death of Parella and Grith, and Madiquel was angry. She was also hurt, that it had taken so long for word to reach her, and of course, heartbroken at the loss of the loud, crazy woman that had had her hand in helping to raise not only Madiquel, but all the children that had been born in or before Katila.

Finally reaching her destination, Madiquel slammed into the door, grunting when it was actually latched properly and not half open like her befuddled mind had expected, though she didn’t know why she’d thought that. Stepping back, Madiquel rubbed her chest with the hand holding the note, while the other hand wrenched the door handle, flinging it open and storming in; she closed it behind her, aware of her surroundings enough now to not slam the door, instead it clicked shut quietly.

The bathing room was humid, steamy, and contained a startled bluerider staring up at her from the water. Madiquel didn’t notice as she stomped through the room, kicking aside a piece of N’lis’ clothing as she went, trying to rally her thoughts so she could speak. “Did anyone tell you?” she finally ground out, spinning around and glaring down at N’lis like he had personally insulted her dragon, rage burning in her green eyes. Hands on her hips, she lifted the one with the note in it. When he didn’t immediately respond, she stomped over to the edge of the tub, and collapsed into a seated position, dropping her bare feet and legs into the water and shoving the note towards N’lis.

“Parella is dead,” she said quietly, her voice hitching into a soft sob and she ran her hand through her hair, before scrubbing at her face and wiping away the tears that were trying to gain control. She gave up, her bottom lip trembling, and tears tumbling down her cheeks. She didn’t collapse into a wailing heap, but it was pretty clear she was miserably heartbroken about the news. “S-she was p-poisoned.” She stuttered, sniffling with a soft hiccup.

N'lis gave a squeak of surprise as someone ran into the door. That was odd. And then M'quel stepped inside and that was even odder. What was she doing there at such an early hour? In her little night shirt? While he was in the bath? His brain was having a hard time computing any of that and then she went and glared at him while tossing out a question he had no idea what it linked to. "Uh," he stated gracefully while slowly sinking into the water when M'quel sat on the edge. His brain was starting to catch up and while he was holdbred, he'd been in the Weyr long enough that shyness in the bath was mostly gone. However, N'lis still didn't like people seeing his scars, no matter how much Zelana had tried to make them seem like patterns and nothing to be ashamed of.

He had managed to sink to his neck by the time M'quel revealed what was on her mind. He did know Parella was dead since the Weyrlingmaster had been keeping them informed of the murders to help keep them on alert and watch for anything suspicious. But N'lis suspected it was best that he didn't say that he did given how angry his friend seemed to be over not hearing it right away. A part of him wondered how she would have avoided the gossip that would have been flying around the dining cavern if nowhere else but he had to admit M'quel was also pretty oblivious; at least he assumed she never noticed his past interest in her. He didn't want to think that she had and purposely ignored it because she was too kind to shoot him down.

Forgetting for the moment that he only wanted to hide, N'lis slowly lifted a hand from the water and placed it on one of M'quel's bare knees in a gesture he hoped was comforting. He also did his best to ignore they were bare and attached to thighs he could easily run his hand up if he was braver and the time wasn't so inappropriate. That helped him stay focused.

"I'm so sorry, Madiquel," he whispered, using her old given name. He knew her honorific and liked it but sometimes honorifics seemed so impersonal. "I've only ever heard stories about her and Grith but never interacted with them. I heard they were amazing and fun and helped raise everyone in Katila." He wanted to give M'quel the proper hug she needed but he was wet and naked and neither seemed the best form of dress for that.

Crying softly, it took the touch of N’lis’ wet hand on her knee for M’quel to be brought back to the present and their location. She blinked down at N’lis, wiping distractedly at her face to clear the tears that just wouldn’t stop. “They were the best,” she sniffled, dropping one hand over the top of N’lis’ and squeezing it gently. “I didn’t know you didn’t meet them,” she said honestly, wiping at her face with the other hand as she studied N’lis’ face. “Sometimes I forget you were Searched.” She smiled softly. Her anger abated as she sighed, shoulders drooping.

“Par’a – that was her honorific – was the best. She used to watch us kids when we escaped the Creche.” M’quel wasn’t prone to running away as a child, of course, but she had joined her friends in escapades more than once, to wind up at the greenrider’s hut to play instead of doing pretty much the exact same thing in the creche. “She used to let us paint Grith,” she added, a wistful smile on her lips. M’quel pulled her gaze back to N’lis from the blank space across the room she’d been staring at. “Maybe Ze will let me paint her…” she trailed off as she felt the green dragon’s wary curiosity.

“I just can’t believe they’re gone,” her tone dropped, expression saddening and she squeezed N’lis’ hand again, her own still covering it. “Why is this happening?” She asked, expression almost desperate, confused and bewildered. “Why are all these people being murdered?” It made no sense to her, and though she’d certainly heard her share of gossip about it in the Weyr, M’quel had yet to hear an explanation that made any sense at all. It was so random, so petty, so uncalled for. Dragonriders were only just getting back on top of everything. Why was someone trying to destroy them again?

I want to be painted! Dalsuth, for once quietly flopped on the floor in the corner, shouted out, intrigued by the idea. That sounded fun! It was the first time he had spoken up since he knew N’lis enjoyed his bath time and liked to quietly reflect in the water when he had the chance; and he had threatened to lock Dalsuth out if he was too loud and energetic. He didn’t want that! He was almost too big to fit through the door now and wanted to enjoy the time together a bit longer. But he couldn’t keep the idea of being painted to himself and blurted it out, despite it still not feeling like the right moment for his opinions and antics.

N’lis gave Dalsuth a small smile, catching on to how his dragon was feeling and appreciated the restraint he had been clinging onto until that point. He also chuckled softly when Dalsuth belly crawled the short space to nudge his nose against M’quel until she gave him a soft pat in acknowledgement of his attempt at comforting her.

“I wish I knew why or who it is,” N’lis sighed, heartbroken at all the loss and near-loss. Someone had gone after Rhaedalyn! Her daughters could have had that stupid muffin and died and the horrible person doing all of this didn’t seem to care. Word was that even Parella wasn’t the target but Cazan or T’ryn were. They’d already been targeted as well! N’lis had sent a letter to Cazan after the first attack to say how relieved he was that she and her mate were safe and wished them well. The thought of sending another one wasn’t appealing. Who would do such things and why? There were a lot of theories going around but N’lis couldn’t believe any of them. They all seemed to have flaws but then again, the sick bastard, or bastards, doing it clearly weren’t logical beings any longer.

He turned his hand under M’quel’s so he could properly hold hers. It was still weird to be having such a moment and discussing such horrible things while he was naked in a bath but his friend’s comfort was more important than his own. “I know it’s horrible to say or think but one good thing is how this is making us all more vigilant and aware of our surroundings. This might help us with Thread one day and maybe one of us will find those responsible for this soon now that we’re all paying so much attention.” And how they were growing suspicious of everyone else. N’lis worried that might do more harm and would lay marks on fights breaking out.

M’quel startled visibly when Dalsuth shouted out, nearly falling into the pool with N’lis as she turned, eyes wide, and then smiled warmly at the young blue. “I didn’t see you there,” she admitted sheepishly, reaching out her free hand to rub at his eye ridge when he crept close enough. She turned her attention back to N’lis as he spoke, her lips pursing thoughtfully as she laced her fingers through his when his hand turned, squeezing again as she shook her head. “No you don’t.” She said firmly, but quietly. “If you knew who it was, you’d be hurt – or worse.” The last thing M’quel wanted was one of her best friends to get hurt! It was bad enough that so many important people to her were already injured or dying or dead.

“Thread is scary,” M’quel said slowly, softly, pursing her lips but not disagreeing with what N’lis was saying. The events were one way to prepare. A scary, unneeded way that was a waste of life and no guarantee that the people involved would actually take what was being learned and use it. But it was a learning experience. Feeling overwhelmed by all the negative emotions, M’quel sighed softly, a sad sound, and pushed off from the edge of the bathing pool, sliding gracefully into the water and holding out her arms – one hand still holding N’lis’ – for a hug. The fact that he was in the bath (and now so was she) and that he was more than likely naked (it was only sensible to bathe without clothing) were all things M’quel wasn’t considering – at least until she paused and blinked at N’lis, whom she realised in that moment only came up to her chest.

M’quel paused, tilting her head and peering down at him in confusion. “Why are you ducking?” she asked in bewilderment, ducking down herself so her shoulder’s vanished into the water and her head was even with N’lis’. Her confusion and lingering sadness suddenly vanished, and M’quel’s eyes sparkled with mischievousness. “Are you shy?” she teased playfully, biting her bottom lip. “I’ve seen you shirtless before.” Not since before either of them Impressed, maybe longer, but it wasn’t like various states of nakedness was something foreign. Gliding forward in the water, M’quel stopped inches from N’lis and reclaimed her hand; a moment later, her head vanished as she removed her nightdress, and punted the wet material to the side, giggling when it landed in front of Dalsuth’s nose.

“Better?” she murmured, turning her gaze back to N’lis; her cheeks were coloured darkly and her gaze was shy. She wasn’t really sure why she’d done that, or what she expected to happen (or not happen). She wasn’t even sure if she was crossing lines with Dalsuth’s growth, because the only dragon that had had issues with connections had been Dyoricath, and M’quel hadn’t been paying attention to those lessons, because she hadn’t been feeling the warm and strange sensation in her lower belly then that she was now.

A lot of questions hit him in rapid succession when M'quel moved.

Why was she in the water?

Why did she seem to want a hug?

Where did he look when the way her flimsy shift clung to every curve of her body?

Why was she removing it?

Oh, Faranth! She was naked before him and his body was reacting as much as his mind raced with what he wished he could do. Well, if he had any doubts, it seemed his crush on his friend had not gone away but had simply calmed itself down until the most inappropriate time. N'lis glanced at his dragon, noting the way Dalsuth's head was cocked and was regarding the pair of them. Three months ago would have been an appropriate time and in another month or two as well. But right then, in that very moment, he had a dragon that was only nine weeks old; a dragon that was full of energy and constantly curious.

N'lis didn't think Dalsuth would sound the alarm and have a fit over his thoughts but he needed to still be careful and to stop thinking about how lovely it would be to kiss M'quel. Thankfully Dalsuth was busying himself by wringing out the dress that had been tossed at him. N'lis knew it was less to do with being helpful and more to do with needing something to do as the dragon could only stay still for so long but it kept him busy either way.

"I uh," N'lis tried to form a reply to one of the many things M'quel had said during his mini-meltdown but even the real reason for his ducking under the water--which was clear and not exactly obscuring his scars or anything else--left him shy and awkward. He knew his friend wouldn't judge him and Zelana had helped him gain a bit of confidence but N'lis still hated talking about himself, especially his insecurities.

"The scars," he mumbled, staring at the water just to the left of M'quel so he could avoid seeing her body. Zelana had assured him they weren't that bad and compared to Indivara's, he knew she was right. But there were still a lot of them and some were ugly and more prominent than others.

M’quel’s momentary shyness faded as N’lis seemed to shut down entirely, and a small smile was quirking her lips up slightly, her smile kind of amused but also unsure. She didn’t consciously understand how she was the cause of N’lis’ internal meltdown, but she did find it rather adorable and she inched a bit closer as he looked everywhere but at her. M’quel was a confident girl; she’d been told she was beautiful enough by people she knew loved her (even if they were biased) that she believed it. It never occurred to her that the reason he wouldn’t look at her was because she was ugly – it was definitely because he was shy.

“Your scars?” she asked softly, her voice warm with affectionate amusement as she watched him twist away to stare off to one side. Sometimes he was a strange little Holder! She’d thought removing her dress would make him more comfortable, not less! All for one and one for all and all that nonsense. Well, it had made sense to her anyway. M’quel chewed on her bottom lip, half pouting under her soft smile. After a moment, she sighed deeply. “I’ve made you uncomfortable.” She stated, still watching N’lis avoid her. He’d always been a bit twitchy, she realised, as she looked back on their friendship, but never so bad as he was now. “I’m sorry.”

She was genuine in her apology – she truly hadn’t meant to make him uncomfortable – and so made to fix the issue. Turning around, she stood up properly so she could wade across the pool over to where Dalsuth was playing with her nightdress. M’quel smiled at the young dragon, and gently reclaimed the material. Pulling it on, even though wearing it wet did nothing to hide what was under it, M’quel hauled herself out of the pool, and sat beside the dragon, pulling her legs up and crossing them, then leaning her elbows on her knees. She peered back at N’lis curiously.

“I’m sorry I made you uncomfortable. And I’m sorry you feel like you have to hide your scars from me. I wouldn’t be mean about them.” He should know that, and she felt she was being redundant for saying it, but sometimes things had to be said to be made real. Maybe this was one of those things? Either way, it couldn’t hurt. “I still want a hug,” she stated, giving a wonky smile. “But I can wait until you have clothes on if that makes you feel better about it.” A considerate pause, and she picked at a finger nail for a moment before almost awkwardly asking, “would you like me to go?” She didn’t really want to go, she wanted to stay and talk even though he was trying to bathe, but now her anger had abated and her grief was wallowing on the outer edge of her thoughts, she was quite aware of his discomfort, even if she wasn’t aware of the reasoning behind all of it.

N’lis glanced away again when he saw M’quel stand and he quickly turned to the side to ensure he didn’t steal a peek. He knew she wouldn’t mind and there was a chance he was insulting his friend by his behaviour. Weyrbrats, from what he had heard and seen, didn’t seem to mind prancing around naked or near enough. He’d been in the Weyr long enough that general nudity didn’t bother him much anymore but this was different and he hated himself for treating it as such since he’d clearly offended or upset M’quel.

When he heard M’quel get out of the water and seem to settle down on the ground, N’lis risked a glance over his shoulder. The wet clothing was back on and helping his situation a bit so he turned back around. He still felt terrible for upsetting his friend but that didn’t have him rising up out of the water. He continued to stay as low as he could while again trying to find the right words. Dalsuth shifted and rested his head on M’quel’s lap, deciding he could get some more affection out of all the sitting around they were forced to do. N’lis gave a small smile at his dragon and wished he was that confident.

Maybe he could be. Maybe he could tell her that he worried she would find the scars ugly and find him ugly and that’s why he hid them from her. Maybe he’d just stand up and march over there and hug her like she wanted and not worry about his nakedness and state of arousal. Maybe he’d even kiss her because he was super confident and not afraid of making his baby dragon panic over being replaced.

Yeah… no… he wasn’t going to do any of that.

Dalsuth gave a soft whine and N’lis tensed, afraid that his thoughts had finally triggered something in his little blue ball of energy. N’lis likes you, Dalsuth said instead, causing N’lis to give his own pitiful whine and try to sink further into the water. I don’t know why it’s a big deal though. I like a lot of people and dragons! I like you, too. Oh boy. Maybe this was why intimacy was actually forbidden for a few months. N’lis was not at all prepared to have the talk with his dragon and suspected Dalsuth wouldn’t fully comprehend it anyway.

He was at risk of drowning himself or at the very least turning himself into a prune since he couldn’t stay in the water forever. Not to mention the fact that an assistant would come for him soon since they only had so much time in the morning before breakfast and the official start to their days that were beginning to have a proper routine. Hoping Dalsuth’s words would keep M’quel distracted, N’lis moved as quietly as he could to leave the water and grab his towel so he could wrap it around his waist. Hooray for still being rather slender, he supposed. The towel just made it around with enough to tuck in and it was wide enough to at least cover his groin but all of his scars on legs, arms, and torso were still on display.

But now that he was out of the water, N’lis didn’t know what to do and still didn’t know what to say. So he went with an apology of his own. “I’m sorry I made you uncomfortable and feel bad, Madiquel. I’m not used to sharing a bath with—uh, like that.” He fiddled with the towel, unsure of what to do with his hands and finally lightly crossed them at his chest while still wishing he was that cool and confident man.

M’quel shifted her bemused and bewildered gaze from the back of N’lis’ head to look at the dragonet that was snuggling in close to her, and gently gave him scritches at his eye ridges, cooing softly to him under her breath as she waited for N’lis to relax. She didn’t realise how much of a big deal it had all been, but apparently N’lis was still a whole lot of a Holder still. She had told him that she often forgot he was Searched, and she hadn’t been lying. Probably better not to forget so quickly after being reminded, though. That was silly of her.

Dalsuth’s soft whine caused M’quel to blink in surprise, looking down at the dragonet in worry that she’d hit a sore spot or something while she was scratching at his hide for him, but it didn’t seem to be the issue and a moment later the sweet little dragon was speaking and M’quel blinked at him dumbly, and then her mouth formed a little ‘o’ of surprise and her face blushed darkly as she finally put together all the awkward words and actions of not only their current encounter, but no shortage of the previous ones, too. Oh, was on replay, and she could feel Zezeth’s exasperation, but wasn’t sure if it was because of the repeated thought or the denseness of her rider.

Glancing up, M’quel bit her bottom lip when she realised N’lis was angling to leave the bath, and quickly ducked her head down again. Not because she wasn’t curious, but because she felt bad for all her Weyrbrat forwardness when he’d been, well, liking her and she’d been oblivious. She felt so bad! When he started speaking, M’quel lifted her head cautiously, and studied him for a moment, a frown furrowing her brows slightly. She wasn’t uncomfortable; she did feel a bit bad for being an idiot, but she didn’t really think that’s what he was referring to. Chewing on her bottom lip, M’quel carefully lifted Dalsuth’s head from her lap, and climbed to her feet.

Walking carefully around the pool, M’quel stopped when she was a couple of feet from N’lis, still studying his face thoughtfully. “I like you too,” she said frankly, blinking at N’lis with wide eyes and a small smile, her blush creeping up her cheeks again. “Can I have that hug now?” She opened her arms a little, but didn’t make any further move, leaving the decision up to him. She could feel her dragon’s exasperation, but ignored her for the moment – she’d quiz the green beast on her attitude later.

N’lis sighed as he watched his friend get up to probably leave. Why would she stay? He was acting weird around her, made her feel bad after she stripped naked, and now she was aware of his feelings when she had never shown any signal that she felt the same way. He decided blaming Zelly for his pseudo-confidence seemed safe. He’d never have the courage to say anything and he’d just pretend everything was normal when they were in the water. Then again, Dalsuth was the speaker of truths and N’lis suspected it would always end like this no matter what he had done with Zelly previously.

He tensed when M’quel came toward him, ready for rejection or a slap to the face for daring to presume she would ever tolerate such an interest. He was too good for her, he knew that, especially when he saw her with A’tay. They were so perfect together and he simply… wasn’t. He was a touch shorter than the bronzerider and certainly didn’t have A’tay’s confidence and good-looks. He was just there as the supportive, odd, and loser friend.

But M’quel surprised him with her own confession and it showed on his face as his mouth hung open. Yeah, he was so smooth, what wasn’t there to like? Picking his jaw up off the floor, N’lis nodded and stepped into M’quel’s waiting arms to give the needed hug. It had nothing to do with her words, N’lis reminded himself. The woman that helped raise M’quel had been killed and his friend was in need of comfort. Despite the mutual liking, there was something much larger to focus on and N’lis wrapped his arms tightly around the young greenrider so M’quel could cry into his chest or absorb all the good vibes he was sending her way.

He could feel Dalsuth getting restless but could tell it was more about being locked up in the small room than any emotions being given off. N’lis was doing his best not to think of anything to set off the young dragon but he also couldn’t deny that despite the hug being for comfort and how he was trying to ignore everything else, that it felt like he’d miss his chance if he didn’t act now.

Carefully choosing his words so Dalsuth wouldn’t be set off with panic or a wave of questions, N’lis scrounged up enough courage to state, somewhat softly, “one day, I would like to go on a date with you, M’quel. I’d also like to kiss you if you’d let me. Then, I mean. Not now. Well, now would be nice but not sure if it’s allowed and--” he cut himself off and felt his face warming and was glad he hadn’t stopped the hug yet so M’quel couldn’t see. That date would be a long ways away still from what the Weyrlingmaster had stated about the timeline of their lessons but N’lis could wait and use it as something to look forward to.

M’quel relaxed into the hug, ducking her head against N’lis’ chest and wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. Despite – or perhaps because of – the words, the hug was needed. It reminded her she wasn’t alone, and that there were always people around that she could turn to. She didn’t cry, and she wasn’t angry at the moment anymore, either. The hug was just so needed that she soaked it up, and refused to let go even when N’lis took to talking once more. She could hear his heart pounding and it made her smile just a little as she listened to his words, her own heart climbing to somewhere in her throat.

“I would like that,” M’quel said softly, feeling a blush colour her cheeks at the idea of kisses – kisses with N’lis! – and she pressed her cheek to his chest, which felt cooler than the burning of her own skin. It was funny how kisses had her blushing but nuzzling against his naked chest didn’t. M’quel giggled softly as she leaned back just a little, looking up at N’lis with a small smile and bright eyes. “It’s probably not,” she agreed with a serious voice, but her smile didn’t diminish as she stood on tiptoe to press a promising kiss to N’lis’ cheek, nuzzling her face into the crook of his neck as she hugged him tightly once more.

Loosening her hold, M’quel stepped out of N’lis’ personal space – though she kept one hand in his own. “Thank you for being such a great friend,” she said honestly, scrunching her nose up slightly at herself. “And sorry I interrupted your bathtime.” Her expression broke back into a warm smile and she was torn between hugging N’lis again, and letting go of his hand. “I guess I should let you finish getting ready for class,” her face was a comical display of disgruntlement at that thought, but she knew it was true.

She liked the idea! It was one thing to hear M'quel say she liked him but another to have her agree to a date and a kiss. He wasn't used to this level of happiness as it was and then the kiss to his cheek damn near killed him. It wasn't the first time she'd done such a thing in their friendship but it was different now. That peck to his cheek held promises and simply meant more. It took a lot of willpower not to hold his cheek with a dumb grin. As it was, the grin was in place and he didn't think of many things that would remove it for a while.

Okay, M'quel thanking him did it as he shyly ducked his head and shook it in denial. He didn't think he was that great of a friend, especially that morning. He did his best to console her but then hurt her feelings when he didn't want to come out of the water and then it turned into a confession and took away from the pain she had every right to feel. Maybe it was good to have that distraction and something positive to look forward to as well but N'lis felt like he invalidated her feelings and gave her hand a squeeze. "Any time I'm not in a lesson or tending to the antsy boy over there, I'll be there for you, Madi. Promise."

He nodded at the idea that he should finish getting ready for the day and waved as M'quel slipped out the door and out of sight. N'lis heaved a sigh of relief, realising how badly everything could have gone in the end and how well it worked out instead.

Why are you so happy? I like M'quel as well but I don't see any changes. Dalsuth stretched like a feline as he finally gave up trying to stay lying still and got up. N'lis sighed again and shook his head as he quickly started dressing so they could join the class outside.

"I'll tell you when you're older."
