The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Vondal re-read the reply he'd received from the Weavercraft Hall for the hundredth time. "Helyna was searched by dragnriders from Fort." He still wasn't sure who this woman was exactly, but just thinking about her name filled him with a sense of concern. Was she okay? Was she happy? Did she remember him? He didn't know why those were the first thoughts he had, but hopefully it meant something. He kept trying to envision the woman but his mind remained distressingly blank.

He had to find her. Hopefully she would know something... and hopefully she would be okay. Maybe seeing this Helyna would be worth the journey. It had been quite the long one, he'd gotten off the ship at Fort Sea Hold and gotten right onto an old nag. He was crusty and salty from the sea, covered in hair and smelling a bit like horse from the ride, and on top of that he was nervous and exhausted in equal measure by the time he arrived at the Weyr.

It was much busier and larger than he anticipated and he took a moment to gawk after leaving the horse in the stables. He'd never seen so many dragons before, and never close enough that he could get a sense of scale on the beasts. He managed to catch a drudge wandering by on an errand and asked if they knew Helyna. They gave him a short response, she was a goldrider.

The response left him dumbfounded, and by the time he could think of a followup question, the man had gone. Vondal cursed and found another person to question, someone not attached to a fearsome dragon. "Where can I find the goldrider? I need to speak with her?"

"Which one? We've got three, Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn, Goldrider Cazan, or Gold--"

"The other one, please. I'm in a rush," he answered impatiently. If it wasn't the first two then Helyna had to be the last option. He was given quick directions and hastily thanked the man before rushing off. When he arrived at the door, Vondal froze, wondering what he would say, what he would ask. What if he saw her face and suddenly remembered more? He took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

The face that greeted him did not trigger any new memories as the tiny blond haired woman peered at him curiously and asked if she could help him. He stammered a moment. "Ah... Helyna?" That didn't feel right, he didn't think this was Helyna, but he wasn't sure either way. Even if she wasn't, maybe she could help him find her.

"Sariel, actually," she said with a smile. "That I know of, we have no Helyna here. Are you trying to find her, then? Please, come in. Don't mind the children. They're content to play with Cirith for now."

The twins were rolling wooden balls at the gold and having them returned gently. Cirith was having a blast with the fine motor control it took to nudge the balls back to each to the girls.

"Klah?" she asked. "The only Helyna I know of is the goldrider at Benden. I haven't had much contact with her, though. I think Goldrider Cazan has more in that respect."

Vondal cringed once he realized he had definitely found the wrong woman, and slowly followed her in. He wasn't entirely comfortable with the thought of intruding, but he had nothing else to do with his search at a dead end. "I thought she was here... they said she came here," he unfolded the well worn message again to read it with a frown.

Once inside he tried to give the dragon and children as wide a berth as he could, the enormity of the creature sending his stomach into nervous knots. And Helyna was supposed to have one of those? He turned back to Sariel and gave her a nod and a forced smile. "I won't turn down klah, thank you. And Helyna is supposed to be a goldrider I think! That was what someone else I bumped into said but..." his heart sank even further. "Benden?"

He let out a soft string of curses under his breath. "I don't even know where the nearest port to that is... I just... I need to find her. You said Goldrider Cazan might know her? She's here right? Could you tell me how to find her?"

"She'll be down the hall." Sariel ignored the curses the best she could. "Or at the Hatching Grounds, probably. Her gold Rose and is currently clutching. I can come with you, if you like. But yes, Helyna is at Benden, now."

She passed over a cup of klah, the motion delicate.

"If I may ask, what is it you wish her for? I've not seen anyone come looking for another like this before." Perhaps a note to Helyna was due, just in case.

"I don't believe you've said your name. Or did I miss it?"

Is this one a bother? I can make him leave if I show my teeth. The gold tilted her head a little to fix her whirling eyes on the man as she rumbled. He offered no greetings to me. Terrible manners.

No, love. I'm just curious. He doesn't seem accustomed to dragons at all. Do give him a pass. Cirith grumbled as Sariel poured herself her own klah and gestured for the man to sit.

I do not like him, perhaps because I have the feeling he thinks I am a beast and may eat him if I desire. But I will tolerate this for you. Cirith said, keeping an eye on the man as she gently tapped a ball back to Lariel.

"You don't have to bother, really. Sorry to trouble you. I'm sure I can find her on my own." Vondal didn't want to trouble anyone with his nonsense, especially when he couldn't even remember what it was he needed. He still took the klah though, unable to turn down an offer of any free food or beverage. He took a hasty sip, burning his tongue and leaving him wincing and blowing on the cup to try to get it to cool down.

He glanced nervously over at the dragon again, not liking how close it was. "I'm afraid I can't really say... it's just important that I talk to her." At least he hoped it was important that he talked to her and that it wouldn't just leave him with more mysteries or some sort of uncomfortable truth. The most he remembered was a vague sense of dread when it came to the craft hall, and an overwhelming need to hide. It was why he'd opted to stay with the sailors who had found him so many years ago. What better way to hide than on a ship?

What if he had a terrible secret? What if he was some sort of wanted criminal and that was why he was hiding? Was Helyna an accomplice? Or a victim? Maybe it was a terrible idea to find her after all. But he still had to know. He tried to frantically scramble for a fake name to use for the moment and said the first thing that came to mind. "Dally. Sorry, forgot to introduce myself. I'm Dally."

"You may want the escort. I wouldn't bother Cazan too much if I were you," Sariel said, quietly placing his face and the name Dally into her mind to be reproduced when he left. He was an odd flit, wasn't he? Nervous, hesitant, and just strange. Not at all forth giving about any information that was for sure.

She didn't care for it at all. He could have sent a note to the Weyrleadership, honestly.

Sapphire, her blue firelizard popped in and settled on her shoulder, chirping brightly at the new face. He was looking for a tidbit of fruit and she gave him a small piece of sliced redfruit.

"The escort would be no trouble," she said waving that off. "Do be careful with the klah. It is rather hot, especially with winter settling." She blew across her own before sipping at it. She needed the warmth these days.

"Oh... is... is she very unfriendly? We don't have to bother her at all then. I can just... you said she was in Benden? I'll figure something out." Vondal frowned, taking another sip of klah. He could probably find a ship bound for Nerat Bay, and from there... well he still had that horse. It was old, but it might still do the job.

He jumped at the sudden appearance of the firelizard, barely managing to keep his klah contained to its cup. "Shit! Sorry, sorry. Just startled. If... if you think it would be fine I suppose we can stop by and see Cazan? If you think she'll know anything about Helyna."

Vondal hated how nervous he was about the entire thing. He'd spend the past decade of his life as comfortable as he could get working on the ship. Sure he didn't know anything about who he used to be or where he came from, but at least things were simpler.

The uncertainty surrounding the current situation was just unsettling, and he couldn't help but think that the dragon didn't like him, though it was hard to tell since he'd never seen a dragon's face this close before.

"She isn't unfriendly, just busy," Sariel said quietly. "She is a leatherworker and usually quite on the busy side. I suggest you make your visit short. I believe she is in regular contact with Helyna."

She paused lightly.

"You're not used to Weyrs at all, are you? This is Sapphire my firelizard. The gold is Cirith, my lifemate, and while she might look as if you're about to be her next meal, you aren't. Dragons do not eat people."

Mal would be entertained by a visitor at least.

"Nor do firelizards."

"Oh... I thought she was a goldrider. My mistake." He paused, frowning for a moment and asked, "Or is she both?" Vondal didn't know anything at all about how things worked in a Weyr, he just remembered that the shiniest ones were the most prestigious, with the gold ones being the rarest and most important.

Upsetting an important lady was the last thing he needed... though he supposed he was already interrupting a different important lady. He quickly shook his head in response to her question. "No, not at all. This is my first time..." at least he thought it was his first time.

At least he now knew that dragons didn't eat people, though he wasn't sure if that was just a lie for his benefit, because the gold certainly looked more than big enough to be able to handily accomplish it. "I was just startled... wasn't expecting it. Sorry."

Vondal took a long soothing sip of his klah to finish it off and then held the cup back out to Sariel. "Thank you. And if we're going to see this other person can it be soon? I don't want to get caught here too late... I don't exactly have a place to stay so I would have to go back to the Hold."

"She's both and very good at it. Come then," Sariel finished her cup and rose to elegantly stride towards the door. She knew Cirith would inform Mal they were about to have visitors. They were as thick as thieves sometimes.

"Let's get you on your way."

It was easier to lead the way than let the man roam all over the Faranth blessed Weyr. He could get lost and wind up somewhere he wasn't supposed to be.

At least this way, she could get him there and back again. The shiftiness made her nerves tighten and she didn't like it one bit.

"Thank you," Vondal said as he quickly moved to follow her and get further away from the dragon. At least the the gold could no longer give him what he was absolutely certain were hungry eyes now and he let out a soft breath of relief once they were out in the hallway.

Hopefully Cazan would know something more about Helyna. He was quiet as he followed along, and when they finally stopped at another door he shifted his weight anxiously after Sariel knocked. The door opened to show a rather tall short haired woman who was narrowing her eyes at him in annoyance. Vondal shrank slightly. "I was hoping you knew something about Helyna? I really need to speak to her... it's no trouble if not. I can just try to get to Benden on my own. I really don't want to be a bother."

If he had only suspected the gold dragon had wanted to eat him, he was pretty sure this Cazan woman did. Vondal swallowed the nervous lump in his throat and tried to put on a harmless smile.

Cirith says a suspicious man is coming to see you with Sariel. He is very rude and... shifty. Malvayth wasn't entirely sure what was going on, she didn't think she'd ever met a suspicious man before. So when there was a knock at Cazan's door she took a peek through her rider's eyes to try to see exactly what shifty and suspicious looked like. He looks like that scared kitchen worker. Only skinny. And with a beard. And a man. And with less screaming. And- I get it, Mal.

Caz was already rather suspicious after the warning from the other gold, and she narrowed her eyes as she studied the man. Ask Cirith if Sariel needs me to punch him. Not yet I don't think. Well let me know if they change their mind. She returned her focus to studying the man. It didn't really make sense for a man to be looking for the goldrider, he didn't seem like the sort of person she would have normally associated with. "Helyna is in Benden. I don't normally just talk about her personal life to strangers. Why do you want to talk to her?"

This guy was so twitchy that Cazan thought he might jump out of his skin if she leaned in and said "boo," she had no idea what he would want with her friend, but it probably wasn't anything good at all. She glanced over at Sariel, eyebrow raised as she wondered if a message had already been sent. She pulled the smaller woman into her weyr and closed the door in the man's face after a short, "wait there." Once the door was closed Cazan whispered, "Have you sent a letter to Helyna yet? Where did you even find him?"

"I was going to, with a sketch," she said, "and he just sorta showed up at my door asking questions and being weird. He says he's never seen a dragon or at least acts like they're going to eat him. Honestly, I have no idea what he wants but Helyna should be warned, anyway."

She shook her head.

"Cirith doesn't seem to like him at all and you know how she seems to love everyone, so I'm...I don't know, feeling super protective."

"Well let's get that letter sent off. I can get Rudi to deliver it, he's gotten a lot of practice with her." Cazan tried focusing on Aederyn's firelizard but he didn't immediately pop in. Mal, can you send Rudi to me? A moment later he popped into the room with a chirp before carefully landing on her shoulder with his messenger pouch. "Okay, we'll get Rudi sent off with your sketch and just a quick note that he's being really weird. And... I guess we can stall him here until we hear back from her? T'ryn is at Telgar today, but I think we can handle this guy."

Cazan frowned. She didn't like the idea of inviting the stranger to stick around, but she liked the idea of him roaming and looking for Helyna even less. Malvayth curiously asked, Are you going to fight him? Is he a villain? Or is this going to be like the fight with Kor'is? I don't know, maybe, and definitely not, Cazan answered in order.

She waited until Rudi was on his way and then reopened the door, gesturing for the man to step inside. "Come on and wait inside while we figure this out. Take a seat." Her tone left no room for argument as she pointed to a chair at the table.

Vondal had been shifting his weight nervously out in the hall, wondering if he should just run off. This didn't seem right at all, what were they even talking about in there? Were they planning something? He frowned, glancing around and wondering how far he could get if he just ran. Maybe they'd stay talking for long enough they wouldn't be able to find him.

But then the door opened and the scowly short haired woman pointed at the chair and ordered him to sit. He did as he was told, stammering softly, "I don't... is this necessary? Really, I just wanted to talk to her I don't want to cause any problems. I can just go."

Were they going to try to trap him there? Had he accidentally offended or said something wrong? Vondal shifted his weight nervously in his chair. "I really don't want trouble. I'm sorry if I offended. I can just go, you don't even have to worry about me bothering you again." They seemed very protective of Helyna, maybe she was in trouble? He frowned at the thought, unsure of what to do. Maybe the little blonde woman would help him. He glanced over at her and softly asked, "Did I do something wrong? Is Helyna in trouble or something?"

"You're fine," Sariel said softly. "We're just getting things settled. Don't worry too much. You're not in trouble, neither is she. I'm just quite protective, don't mind me any. Stay put and we'll help you figure this all out, alright? There's no need to go running off when it's much simpler to do an inquiry to Helyna and see if she wants to meet with you. She's a lovely lady and I'm sure would want this all cleared up."

Sariel said this as kindly as possible but the shiftiness just put her on edge, she couldn't even figure out why. If he was someone Helyna knew then it would be fine. If not, then they'd...well, Cazan would probably kick his ass. And L'gan would be called via Semath. But that was the worse-case scenario.

Right now, everything was fine.

"Dragons can fly between, which means she can get here in moments on her dragon Illiyith. If she wishes to do so."

Things did not seem fine at all to Vondal in that moment. He had one woman pacing around her room like an agitated feline, and the other one had lured him there in the first place. At least there was no dragon to glare at him here so that was an improvement. "If... if you're sure." Though being told not to worry sounded very much like he should be worried. "You don't have to protect anyone from me, I promise. I'm just... just a sailor."

He shrank down in his chair as he tried to think through everything. Maybe he could just run. He could probably outrun them... though he wasn't sure about a dragon. No, he definitely wouldn't be able to outrun a dragon. At least they'd sent a message to Helyna, but he had no idea what they'd sent or what she would say. What if she didn't want to talk to him at all and then he never got any answers?

He waited until the angry one left to start brewing tea and softly asked, "How long do we have to wait to hear back? I'd need time to ride back to the Hold and I don't want to inconvenience anyone..." maybe if he worded it that way they'd be more inclined to have mercy and release him.

"Not long," Sariel said gently. "Long enough to let Helyna make up her mind. She has your name and a sketch I made. Try to relax while things get sorted, mm? No one means you any harm. We just want to make sure things are alright and that no one's hurt or unhappy. Hopefully tea will help with the waiting."

She put a careful, gentle hand on his shoulder.

"Calm, Dally. I'm sure everything will end up just fine. There's no need to be nervous or afraid right now."

She'd sent a sketch? Vondal did not find that comforting at all. It seemed so much more sinister than just sending a normal letter asking if she'd talk to him. What if she recognized him from the sketch? What if that made her angry? If he'd gotten to see her at the same time she saw him then maybe he'd have some clue as to how she felt, what she might know. Now this Helyna would have the upper hand and have gotten to see him first. At least if Sariel was any good at sketching. He had to assume she was.

Vonda jumped at the hand on his shoulder. "Sorry, sorry. Just... ah... ner-not very comfortable. Antsy. I really don't have to stick around... I can just wait outside maybe? Or I can go wait in the Hold and you can uh... send a message when she replies maybe?"

He tried to get up but a cup of tea on the table and a stern glare from the taller woman made him sit back down. "Or I can wait... hopefully she doesn't take too long." What had he gotten himself into? He was starting to feel like maybe this Helyna was bad news.

Cazan shot the man a glare as she a but slammed the cup of tea down in front of him. She was irritated by his intrusion, irritated that he was making Sariel nervous, irritated that things were starting to ache, she was gassy, she was hungry and not. She snapped, "Just sit and wait and drink your tea."

At least she had her own cup of tea to drink, and hopefully that would help her keep things together and not add to her growing reputation for... crankiness. Fierce! Tough! Mal suggested in an attempt to be helpful. Cazan sighed and gently handed Sariel a cup of tea as well before moving to lean against the wall so she could keep an eye on Dally while she sipped.

Thankfully, it wasn't too much longer before Rudi popped back into the room with a proud trill. Caz quickly grabbed the note from Helyna and read it. "Oh good, she's on her way. You," she said with a pointed glare at the strange man, "aren't going anywhere until after she gets here."

Mal, keep an eye out for Iliyith, let her know that Helyna can just walk into our weyr, we still have this guy. Okay! Malvayth was so excited about this strange new game they were playing. It was almost like a story!

They landed neatly on the ledge of Cazan’s weyr, and Iliyith greeted Malvayth and Cirith to let them know the two had arrived. Take a breath. I am here if you need me, and Cazan and Sariel are there. Helyna smiled, resting a hand on her lifemate’s neck and collecting herself.

Striding over to the door to the living area, before she could second-guess herself, she opened it and stepped through. It was an odd tableau with Caz looming off to the side, and Sariel seated at the table. The stranger seated across from her was partially turned away, but he had looked over at the sound of the door. He seemed ready to bolt, and it was difficult to tell at first with the beard and the grime of travel, but his face was familiar. Older, with harsher angles than the last time she’d seen him, but a dead ringer for--

“Vondal?” She said it quietly, still not believing her eyes. She knew she was staring, but she couldn’t help it. Helyna felt her knees wobble alarmingly and grabbed the back of a chair, reminding herself to breathe. When that didn’t help, she sank heavily into the chair, not trusting her ability to stay standing. “It’s not possible… h-how are you here? They… they said you died.” Helyna reached out, then hesitated, half afraid to touch him for fear he was a ghost.

Vondal was still a nervous ball of energy, the longer he sat there the more he contemplated trying to make a break for it. At least until the door opened and he turned to look at the woman who walked in. He froze, his breath catching in his throat as he stared, jaw agape, heart racing. He blurted hoarsely, "Shit... you're... fuck you're the most gorgeous damn woman I've ever seen."

And she was; beautiful, slender, refined, with familiar brown eyes he could get lost in... though there was something odd about the hair that he couldn't quite put his finger on. He'd never found a woman to be attractive before and something about her hit him harder than the deck of the ship when he'd fallen from the rigging. But wait... she knew his name! She recognized him! He had no idea if that was a good thing or not though as he watched her wobble and sink into a chair. He fought the impulse to go to her, instead sliding a hand ever so slightly in her direction. "I... uh... I took a ship. I sailed to Fort Sea Hold, then I found the cheapest horse and rode it here... and..."

He stopped, blinking in confusion. "I died? What?" Had he? Was that why he couldn't remember anything? Was he some sort of ghost person?

A flush rose on her cheeks at the blunt compliment, despite herself. What in the world was that all about? But the way he was talking--and staring--he didn’t seem to recognize her. That couldn’t be right, could it?

She took the hand he’d stretched out, half surprised her fingers didn’t slip right through his flesh. “You’d left on circuit. The hold you were supposed to go to said you never arrived, but your horse was found wandering along the cliffs. Everyone assumed you drowned.”

A sudden flash of anger crossed her face and she shoved his shoulder roughly with her free hand. “I mourned you for a full Turn, named my son after you, and you’ve been alive this whole time?! Did you even tell your sisters and parents? Were they in on it?” Helyna pulled his hand closer, turning it over to show the bare knuckle. “Where’s your ring?” Her voice was tight and her eyes narrowed. “10 fucking Turns and you never thought to write to your wife? Or did you prefer to pretend I didn’t exist? Your best friend in the world.”

Left on circuit... a horse, a cliff... some of those seemed right, but everything was still so very hazy. Vondal suppose he had nearly drowned, the sailors had told him as much when he'd woken up sputtering and coughing on the deck of the ship. If he was out on circuit that would explain why he had a sewing kit strapped to his belt. But then she was angry and he flinched, trying to pull away from a moment before she tugged on his hand more firmly, turning it over with even more of a scowl.

Vondal was speechless, staring at her dumbly. Wife? The room was starting to spin, his breathing sped up while everything else seemed to slow down. He'd been married? How was that even possible? He was gay! He was... not as sure of it as he had been before as he took a moment to look over Helyna again. He tried to speak but only a hoarse croak escaped him and he swallowed, trying to focus for a moment before trying again. "Wife? We were married? I thought... I didn't think... how? When? I don't... I don't remember. The ship found me and I didn't know anything... I only knew my name because it was embroidered on my kit." And even then he hadn't been completely sure it really was his name and not just something he'd stolen or borrowed. But this woman... Helyna... she recognized him.

Tiny bits and pieces started to come back to him, mostly fragments without context, but one of them made his lip twitch in a smile. He had a scar on his leg that people frequently asked him about but he could never explain, only now he could. "You pushed me out of a tree... I remember that... wait. Wait! You have a son? Is... do I have a son?"

He didn’t remember… not even his name? “Though I suspect it is rather moot with your supposed death and my own subsequent Impression, yes. We are.” She sighed and was about to explain further, but he continued.

“I still maintain you deserved it.” She rolled her eyes almost audibly as he asked about her son. She was about to say something along the lines of ‘of course not, you idiot, you’re as queer as I am,’ when she suddenly remembered they weren’t alone in the room. Helyna winced. “No. It’s complicated, but no. He’s not yours. I had him after Iliyith’s first flight.”

She turned to the others and attempted to explain. “Vondal was my dearest friend; we grew up together. We were married less than a year before he went missing. It was… more a matter of convenience than love, at least for me, which you of all people should understand, Cazan.” Helyna smiled weakly and squeezed his hand. “It’s a tremendous shock, but I am pleased. If also terribly confused.”

"Oh..." Vondal sank slightly in his chair, shoulders drooping ever so slightly when he found out the boy wasn't his. It made sense though, far more sense than the thought that he could have fathered anything. Though, the fact that he had a beautiful wife was still boggling. Especially the part where he thought she was beautiful. "That... that makes sense. No offense but normally... ah... I wouldn't think you were my type. Except you are? And that's confusing too. If that makes sense."

He glanced over at Cazan when Helyna mentioned that she would understand marrying for convenience. So she was gay too? Was that why Sariel had brought him to her? Vondal blinked as he realized he'd remembered another small snippet of his past, or rather of hers. That only made the existence of a son even more confusing. "Are you okay? No one... did... ah... I didn't think you'd want a child with anyone... or am I misremembering?"

Vondal gave another nervous look around and quickly added, "Never mind... maybe we can talk somewhere alone? I just... I don't remember enough and I don't want to cause any trouble." He added in a soft whisper, "And I don't think your friends like me."

She couldn’t help a small laugh as he tried to not offend her. “Von, I know. It does make sense… as much as any of this does.” She pushed a hand through her hair while she thought, missing the confused glance he sent at Cazan.

“I don’t have rooms here anymore, and I don’t want to put Cazan or Sariel out any longer. Though,” she looked at Sariel again, “Your mate is about the same size, right? Think he would mind loaning some clothes?” Helyna turned to Vondal, her nose wrinkling. “No offense, but you’re riper than a redfruit left in the sun and those clothes look stiff enough to stand on their own. There shouldn’t be many folks in the bathing room at this hour, so we could talk there. Then… I have a guest room in my weyr at Benden. I can put you up until we figure out more.”

She assured Cazan and Sariel she would be fine, and that Iliyith could call for anything if needed. They arranged to get some of L’gan’s spare clothes and possibly also a brief check-up (though she didn’t mention that to Vondal, not wanting to spook him any further), and the two retreated to catch up some more with what he could remember.
