“Thank you!” Grinning, she took the straps from R’dal and moved to give Edath a grateful scratch as she slung the leather straps over his shoulders, tugging them into place. She nodded at R’dal’s question, suddenly realizing how dirty her clothes were from her morning chores.
“Just a quick stop by the dorm for me to throw on something that looks halfway decent…” The tunic would have to be swapped, but the trousers could stay. She’d recently acquired a reasonable second-hand dress on trade from someone in the lower caverns that came down to her ankles…she could doff the tunic and throw on the dress, leaving the boots and trousers. This short journey wouldn’t warrant a trip between, so her thick wherhide jacket wouldn’t be necessary. As long as she wasn’t outright dirty, she considered herself fine. She was going to see her brother, after all, and he certainly didn’t care. And, she figured, if she were going to get some dancing in, which the toss dance with Alekse was an absolute must, would go much easier if she didn’t have to worry about showing the entire Hold her undergarments if her skirts flew up.
She leaned into the straps to see R’dal from under Edath’s neck, loose strands of red hair falling around her face. “And I promise I won’t lose you.” Her eyes twinkled with the fresh promise of Gather and family, and she couldn’t help grinning. R’dal had a knack for picking up on the feelings of others, and his enthusiasm at her own only served to reflect back tenfold, and she was giddy with the excitement of it.
It wasn’t long before a she was changed, and as a brief afterthought, she fitted Rudi’s new message pouch, scrawled a note, and stuffed it inside. “Go find Alekse!” She said, sending her brown aloft. Grabbing the second tiny harness that rested in a box under her cot, she raced back out to her friends and they were airborne.
