She ran. Ran hard, fast, and without any intention of stopping. Her feet pounded into the trace, and she found herself mildly angered that her light steps didn’t echo the hardness of her roiling thoughts. Her Runner training was so ingrained that she wasn’t even sure if she could pound the earth with her feet the way inexperienced runners do. Her thoughts flipped back to the events of the past few weeks. She wished she’d never agreed to help her sister during her pregnancy, that she’d never left long enough to allow her parents the time to think on ‘what was to be done with her’, as though she needed to be disposed of or hidden. Her steps faltered briefly as the unpleasantness flitted through her mind like dragons going back and forth between.

Finally, after weeks of enduring talk of ‘a woman’s place is in the hold’ from the folk in her sister’s new holding, the baby boy arrived, shrieking, fists flailing, and healthy, and she had been so happy to return to her home station. But then, to be met by her parents and…a suitor?…who ran a small fishing hold on the coast. Nowhere near any runner stations. They had wanted to introduce her to him and hoped to have her off with him by midsummer. Mercifully, they hadn’t gone so far as to actually promise her hand to him, or at least they hadn’t outright said that to her…she was so shocked by the proposition that she spent the next hours in a daze, wondering if she was walking in a dream. A pouch for Fort was pushed into her hand soon after and she took it, and her mind returned to her. She delivered the pouch, and the next morning left from there deciding to run to the Weyr.

She didn’t know why, but she wanted to be there. She dashed tears from her eyes she hadn’t even realized she’d been crying, and skittered ungracefully to a stop as the trace ended at the main road leading into the Weyr, and soon she entered the bowl. The sight of it took her breath away, as it always did. She didn’t know why, but she felt safe here, like she did when she was out on the traces by herself. She wondered if she would see any of her friends…

Not entirely sure what she was planning to do or where she was planning go go, she walked.

D'hys was by nature an early riser and that day was no exception. He'd risen with the sun, gone for his morning jog, oiled Zeianth, had a bath, and then went for a light breakfast. Now it was late morning and he was lacking in things to do. R'nya didn't have any special tasks for him and the Weyr itself was in a rather odd state of calm yet nervous energy. Ista Weyr had started their move to Benden and Telgar was up next. Fort was left waiting for their designated days and since they didn't have their daily shifts of helping to set up Benden anymore, everyone was left trying to find a new routine or finish packing if they were among those transferring.

D'hys didn't see the need to move to Benden. He had carved out a rather good life for himself in Fort, especially with how close he was with the Weyrleader and what R'nya turned a blind eye to in order for them to each get what they wanted. But that meant he was left trying to find something to do since even his contacts in the other Weyrs would either be busy moving themselves or assisting others.

He was cutting through the Bowl, intent on heading back to his weyr and possibly going for a ride just to get away for a bit when he saw someone enter via the path up from the Hold. He waited, watching to see what the newcomer wanted even as he tried to place her as she looked a bit familiar. When she started up her trek again, D'hys did as well, now with a goal in mind as he made his way over to her. He was fairly certain she'd been to a Hatching or two and had been sitting with some younger blueriders. Was that her reason for waltzing in?

When he was several feet away, approaching on her left, D'hys called out, "what brings you to the Weyr today, Red?"

Aederyn sidestepped to her right without looking toward the voice, not wanting to get in anyone’s way and assuming that whoever approached was talking to someone on the other side of her, out of her field of vision. Heartbeats later she realized the person was talking to her. It only occurred to her then that her flaming red hair might stand out a bit compared to other shades and the connection between the impromptu nickname and herself was made. Her stomach dropped and breath hitched as she realized coming to the Weyr might have been a bad idea. Her limited exposure at Hatchings and with R’dal and his friends couldn’t be a full representation of everyone at the Weyr and their attitudes, and that realization came to her with alarming speed and clarity. She might not be welcome here without a purpose. She mentally slapped herself for her stupidity. “Shit…” she mumbled under her breath. She turned and straightened to her full height, which wasn’t all that tall compared to the man approaching her. She blinked.

“Honesty, I have no idea.” She offered a sheepish smile but spoke with a conviction that she hoped said she wasn’t about to just turn and run back to her station. She didn’t have anything to hide and acting like she was in the wrong herself would surely put her in that light to others. She was in the Weyr. She had no purpose being here. But was there anything wrong with that? She couldn’t remember anything in what she learned in her lessons that said there was. Regardless, here she was... “I had a free day from my duties. If they’re not otherwise occupied, I was hoping to say hello to my friends. Maybe pick up a hold-bound message pouch of there is one.” She spread her arms slightly away from where they hung at her sides and added as an afterthought, “I needed some different surroundings.” Best be as truthful as possible. She maintained eye contact with this (attractive) man, fighting the urge to shift from one foot to the other in her sudden nervousness, only breaking to dart her gaze up and shoot a mental command at her little brown. Rudi flitted high overhead before darting off to the side of the bowl to hide on the rock face, chittering but obeying. Aederyn quirked her eyebrows, keeping that small smile, hoping that this person would be, if not welcoming, at least tolerant.

He wondered if she thought she was being adorable with her attempts to look innocent and possibly ditzy. With Rhaedalyn as his Weyrwoman, D’hys knew genuine innocent and ditzy when he saw it and this girl seemed like she was more embarrassed for wandering without thinking. So, there was some truth to her act and she was quick with a reply that he assumed was the truth given what he already knew about her.

D’hys saw the firelizard take off, though he didn’t watch where it went as his gaze continued to linger on the redhead. He was glad to see the thing go, still not fully trusting or liking them though he managed to tolerate some in small doses, but this one didn’t matter to him. He was focused more on the owner and what to do with her. Finally, he gave a light chuckle and slight shake of his head. “We won’t have any missives for you to carry as we have dragons. We can deliver letters and return before you even leave the Bowl. Your craft has its uses but it’s not needed today. So let’s talk about that reason that has you needing a change of scenery.”

Visiting friends and looking for messages to deliver seemed like afterthoughts to what the actual motivation behind her coming to the Weyr was. Did he really care what it was? Not really. But it gave him something to do and perhaps she could be useful by the end of their time together. Runners were everywhere and yet many seemed to be overlooked and secrets were spilled around them. He also wondered how easy it was to corrupt one enough to read letters given to them and pass along any good information. Not that the Holds were all that entertaining or concerned him much but a tidbit of information could come up that would prove useful to either him or the Weyr as a whole if given to R’nya.

“You’re probably also in need of food and drink, regardless of where your feet brought you in from. So come with me and we’ll see to that as you tell me your story.” They were between meals and D’hys didn’t want to bother the kitchen staff over someone he hadn’t decided was worth extra effort just yet. But he had fruit and water in his weyr that he could give to the girl and the walk there wasn’t too long. He gestured toward a doorway not too far from them and waited to see if she would take the first literal step in trusting him before leading her to his home.

Aederyn bristled slightly as his dismissiveness of her Craft. A simple ‘no, thank you’ would have been sufficient, but he had to bring up the dragons and their incredible ability to take them and anything with them between one place and another in the time it took to cough. Careful to school her expression and keep it neutral, if pleasant, she shrugged. Everyone had a place on Pern.

He suggested talking over a meal and she hesitated. He’d seen through her lame excuses as though looking through well-made glass. Something about the brushing off of herself and then the sudden friendliness to offer food and drink didn’t quite sit well with her. Perhaps it was just her sudden uneasiness and alarm of being caught somewhere she didn’t necessarily need to be…

He seemed to want something, too, though she wasn’t sure what. She recognized it as the same feeling when a holder asked if she’d been through a specific part of the continent or when someone ‘happened’ to run into her after hearing she’d come from a particular hold. This was a different flavor of that same thing, but it was still familiar.

She was being silly. Overthinking. The thoughts danced around in her head and she wasn’t sure which ones to trust. Surely, if someone were a part of a Weyr, they were at least reasonable. Her lips quirked in a tight smile and she nodded. The possibility of speaking to an unbiased listener was quite welcoming. She wouldn’t spill her life story unnecessarily, but to be able to just…talk…and to be heard…She told herself that she would tread carefully, with her thoughts as well as her feet, always following the Runners’ creed. She followed his gesture toward the doorway. “Thanks, I’d appreciate the refreshment. My name is Aederyn, by the way.”

"D'hys of blue Zeianth," he replied, fully aware that they hadn't had introductions yet. He was waiting to see what the girl did after being called out for her wandering, both into the Weyr and in general. She seemed a bit on guard, likely more from him casually insulting her craft, but possibly because she wasn't sure she could trust going somewhere alone with a stranger. He didn't blame her at all since he was far from the worst dragonrider around--but he also wasn't the most benign either.

As he led the way to his weyr, D'hys made idle chit chat. something he wasn't a fan of--unless he was trying to win someone over. He still hadn't decided what to do with the runner that meandered into his life but playing a friendly host wouldn't kill him, especially since he was a tad bored. So he let slip some random bits of information about himself, like that he had Impressed pre-plague but Fort hadn't been his home at the time, Igen was. Considering Igen was still closed and would likely remain that way for a long time to come, D'hys hadn't cared where he lived. His connection to R'nya and how it would make his life easier was how he decided his home; though that point he kept to himself.

He led Aederyn inside and gave the faintest of smiles as the scent of the stew he left simmering since the night before hit him. Perhaps he could spare a bowl instead of just fruit. D'hys pointed out the table and chairs as he walked by them to get the promised refreshments though he wouldn't have been surprised if Aederyn took a moment to check out the living space.

After a couple of minutes, D'hys returned with a cup of water and a plate that had a small selection of fruit on it. "I can get you a bowl of stew after this as well if you're in need of something heartier," he offered while setting out the lighter fare for Aederyn before taking a seat.

"So you must have been in the area for your feet to find their way up our path. Or, I hope so anyway. I'd hate to think you wandered from an entirely different region just to think in the Lower Bowl."

Her general uneasiness faded with each passing bit of conversation. She learned a little bit more about what happened regarding the plague that sent the dragonriders south. She was able to roughly gauge the blue rider’s age, and he was older than he appeared, having Impressed before all of the dragons disappeared south. She wondered at that. She’d heard that dragonriders aged slower, but wasn’t sure how true that was. He was also in great physical shape, and that likely helped.

The smell of rich stew teased her and enticed her to step further into the weyr, and she took in the comfortable surroundings, idly trying to guess which doorway led to where the dragon slept. D’hys returned a moment later with a tray of fruit and her eyes lit up at the treat. Fruit didn’t travel well when a person was on foot, becoming bruised and soft by being bounced around in a pack, so it wasn’t something she typically had outside of eat-in meals at a station, and she usually preferred to take dry rations or easy-to-hold snacks and keep on her way.

She eagerly took a slice of something sweet and juicy and closed her eyes as she savored it. Aederyn lowered herself into a chair as D’hys did, and took a moment to swallow the fruit before responding. Careful of what she said, she responded.

“I came from Station 300, closest to Fort Hold, after delivering a message pouch. They didn’t have anything for me to run anywhere else at the time, hence the free day today. I had spent a good deal of time before that farther north, with my sister and her husband, helping to prepare for their new son.” She slowly sipped at the water the blue rider had offered her, unsure how to phrase her next thoughts without seeming like a whining child. “After being continually dismissed, my craft and rank treated as a joke,” she paused briefly, letting her eyes flick back up to the man before looking back over the fruit and selecting another piece, “and being told that women are only good for producing offspring, I was glad to return home, but that didn’t last long as the rest of my family apparently thought I would be better off warming a holder’s bed than running on the traces, too.” The sweet fruit did little to mask the bitterness she felt for that. She heaved a sigh. It felt good to voice her thoughts. She smiled ruefully. “I had made some friends here, and if they don’t appreciate a well-practiced craft they at least appreciate that…a person is still a person.” The last bit sounded a bit silly, but it was something she did find to be true. She smiled as she thought of R’dal and R’dare and wondered if their weyrs were close by. Sitting back in her chair, she watched the blue rider’s face as she finished her second slice of fruit.

D’hys had never paid the runner craft any sort of attention when he was young pre-plague and hadn’t given it much thought since returning North either. But he did make a note of Station 300 and that the craft worked out of these Stations and it might serve him well to learn more about them. He also wondered if runners weren’t fed often given the joy he saw spark in the redhead’s eyes and how she dug in. Then again, it was likely more to do with a high metabolism, something he knew a bit about given his own enjoyment of morning runs. No doubt Aederyn would still out pace him with ease but he found himself a tad curious about it all the same and made another note to invite her for a run if he ever led her to his bed for the night.

Careful, you almost sounded like a normal human making plans beyond just sex. Zeianth’s dry remark almost had D’hys laughing out loud as he hadn’t expected it. He supposed he deserved it as it did sound like that and it was highly uncharacteristic for him. He really was bored that morning.

Luckily, his slight look of amusement aligned with the confession that holders viewed women as baby-makers. Outside of the old leadership in Katila encouraging constant breeding to help their secret ranks grow, the Weyrs really didn’t care if a woman popped out a kid or how many. “Sounds like you were not only running, but running away to join a Weyr, Red. We don’t care if you have children and we don’t care which beds or how many you’re warming—if any. And as you said about your friends, we all know a person is just a person and you’re free to be whatever you want to be.”

Including being one of his toys but that admission wouldn’t go over well. D’hys got up and went to his cooking fire with a bowl he grabbed along the way. A stir was given to his stew before he ladled a generous portion into the bowl and returned to the table, setting the hot food down for Aederyn as well. “Homemade, as taught to me by my later mother. She loved to cook and was also a dragonrider. Her passion rubbed off on me a bit, I guess you could say. See, I may not look the domestic type, but I’m free to me be here.”

He sat again and smiled warmly at his guest. “I’d like that for you as well, even if it’s only for the remainder of your visit before you leave us again.”

Aderyn froze in her seat. Join a Weyr? Her head reeled with the thought. Running had been her entire life. It was what she did and all she knew. All she ever wanted to do was to be a good Runner, which she was. So…why wasn’t she pleased to settle for where she was at? She’d never be a station manger or a Master of her craft. She had gone as far as she could as a Runner. What more was she seeking? D’hys continued on but she barely caught what he said, her little world beginning to crack around her. He talked of freedom, to do what she wanted and be who she wanted, and that did sound very appealing.

He brought her a portion of stew, and her stomach grumbled as though anticipating the food. Her brows furrowed slightly at the neat, tidy, perfect image this blue rider put up: it seemed so good it couldn’t possibly be real. Here was this devilishly good looking blue rider, putting off the perfect picture of a domestic male, doing the cooking and serving her, telling her that he was free to be himself here as this cooking, settled-down type, and she could be whatever she wanted to be, here, too. She was almost expecting a perfect ray of light to alight on his smile and sparkle off. She couldn’t help it. She pursed her lips brought her hands up to her face to stifle the snort of laughter trying to erupt, causing her eyes to water instead. Her shoulders shook and she regained control, brushing the tears from her face.

“I am so, so very sorry, I mean no disrespect. This just seems…far too good to be anything I could ever hope for.” She shook her head, sending her red curls dancing around her face, smiling at the absolute ridiculousness she found herself in. “Is that even something a holder or crafter can do? Join a Weyr?” Eyes wide, she searched his face. “Wait, your mother was a dragonrider? I didn’t think women…well, queen riders…” The smell of the stew wafted up to her, and she absently took a spoonful. It was quite good.

Aederyn was delightfully innocent and perhaps a bit too trusting. He could point out several times since they left the Bowl where he could have harmed her or even poisoned her with the stew she now ate. She also harboured a feisty streak, which he had seen hints of, especially when it came to the integrity of her craft. She reminded him a lot of a certain female greenrider he knew and might even be tempted to call friend. That woman put far too much trust in him but also called out some of his shenanigans which was amusing. He had a feeling Aederyn would be much the same and D'hys decided he could continue playing the shining hero the girl was obviously desperate for.

"No disrespect taken. I've likely heard it all before and once people try what I'm offering, their tune changes and they're begging for more." D'hys grinned, doing his best not to be too heavy-handed with the innuendo as he didn't want to scare the girl away just yet. If only she knew what was hidden behind one of his doors! He supposed she could be interested in that level of play but they had time to work their way there.

He shifted, making himself as comfortable as one could be in a kitchen chair and figured he could divulge some more information about his past. "My mother was a greenrider. Before the plague, women were a frequent enough sight on greens and even a few on blues. In recent clutches, the dragons seem to be drawn more to women once more, giving us a handful of greens and a couple of blues." His personal view on that matter was whatever made the dragon happy. D'hys didn't care who rode on the back of a dragon so long as their mind was sound and they treated their dragon with love and respect.

"And Weyrs do take in some people that just show up. We could always use an extra set of hands, but we could also ask a Searchrider to take a look at you and get you in as a Candidate." Zeianth could do it, but he wasn't classified as a true Search dragon since they kept that fact to themselves. Aederyn's friend, R'dal, was a Searchrider and D'hys wondered if the pair had already secretly checked her out and what the result was. Possibly negative if that hyper child hadn't spilled the beans already.

The redhead choked on her water at his remark, wondering if he knew how overtly improper he sounded. That doubt lasted all of a half-second. He knew what he said. The man seemed to be more than a bit roguish and knew how to make the best use of his good looks, that devilish smile spreading across his face. He intrigued her, and while she wanted to take a look over the edge, she could see it was likely dangerous and wasn’t sure she wanted to chance falling. Watch your step, girl, she told herself. It was plain to see that he loved this bit of dancing back and forth, on the edge of being respectful and outright rude, and she wasn’t sure whether to applaud his talented manipulation of words and manners or to toss her drink in his face. She instead sipped at what remained of her water, a blush creeping up her neck to warm her cheeks and she she opted for the middle of the social road by offering a small smirk, chuckling into her cup.

He settled into the chair and spoke briefly of women’s roles in the Weyr, and how women had previously ridden other colors and some still do, not strictly limited to the big beautiful queens. Fighting dragons, blues and greens, with lady riders? She had never dared hope to Impress, let alone a queen…but a blue or green? Her breath came out in a heavy, doubtful sigh. Was she honestly even entertaining the idea of Impressing at all? She’d never dared to even think of getting near a dragon this time last year, and here she had ridden blue Edath with R’dal, several times! She’d been to a Hatching, and now she was honestly considering staying here…

A worm of guilt wriggled into her gut at the idea of leaving everything she’d worked so hard for, everything she was so familiar with, when D’hys mentioned speaking to a Searchrider. If she were Searched…she would have an excuse! And her station might even be glad to be rid of her, the awkward, single woman who wouldn’t do as she was supposed to and just settle down to run a home and have babies already. Giving her to the Weyr would be a far better alternative than attempting to set her with a holder boy to get her off of the traces and out of their hair…especially if she couldn’t bear heirs…That thought burned her like a knife in the gut. Her ‘illness’ did weight on her mother, but just as well, it was something that wasn’t spoken of and mercifully hadn’t come up in years. She dreaded that conversation if she were to be married off…And by being Searched, she wouldn’t be abandoning anything, just moving on to something else, something better

Her voice was barely above a whisper as she looked to D’hys, hoping against hope. “Could we?”

It would be so easy to crush the hope he saw shining in eyes he realised were dark blue. Tell her she wasn’t Candidate material—which may have been the truth, or the actual truth that girls needed to be trained in a useful craft, like healing, if they wanted to Stand at Fort. That was something he would have to work around but he figured he could get R’nya to agree to whatever he came up with. But bursting her bubble simply wouldn’t be as much fun as getting her in and continuing to play with her until his attention wandered.

I could use you back home for a few minutes, Zeianth. Get your opinion before we call in a Searcher. D’hys reached out for his dragon, hating to bother Zeianth when he knew the blue was off visiting with one of his favourite friends, especially after receiving a full oiling earlier. But his silent appraisal would be good to have and no doubt Aederyn would want to meet his dragon and had been too polite or distracted to ask.

“We can. Would you like your friend R’dal to do it or would you like for me to bring in a stranger?” He was at a bit of a loss in this situation. Would it be better to have a friend potentially say you weren’t right for a dragon or was it easier to hear it from someone you didn’t have a connection with? He’d leave it up to the girl this time as he rose to his feet once more and waved for her to follow him since it seemed she was done eating.

“Come and meet Zeianth while you decide who you would like to potentially Search you. Though, he’s not much of a talker so don’t take offence if he doesn’t reply to you.” Some Holders simply couldn’t comprehend that not all dragons wanted to muck about in their messy and dull minds and took offence to the silence when they greeted a dragon or asked questions. D’hys could still count on one hand the amount of people that he was aware of that Zeianth had ever spoken to.

D’hys led Aederyn out to the ledge where Zeianth had just landed. He stayed out in the sun since it was both a warm morning to savour as well as a way to show off his hide in the light. “My lady runner, I present to you, blue Zeianth of the icy hide.” D’hys gave a flourish of his hands to indicate she could continue walking and get as close as she wanted to the dragon. “I’m the one you have to worry about when it comes to biting while Zeianth is a bit of a teddy bear.” He heard Zeianth’s snort of amusement in his head but D’hys didn’t elaborate on his statement.

Aederyn slumped in relief for a moment as the blue rider responded in the affirmative. She thought on his question: to bring in another Searchrider or to have R’dal come…R’dal was a searchrider? She hadn’t known that, but shrugged it off. Weyr business was Weyr business and at the time, it hadn’t been relevant and therefore nothing to bring up. But now…She stood and followed him outside, mulling the thought over.

Zeianth waited on the ledge, his stunningly marbled hide gleaming in the morning sun, no doubt freshly oiled. He was absolutely magnificent, and the thought of possibly being able to call a dragon her own someday filled her with a sense of awe and pride and set her stomach to fluttering. She spoke over her shoulder to D’hys as she approached the blue. “Of course, none taken. Dragons will speak to whomever they chose, and that is their business.” The comment on D’hys being the one to bite did prick the hair on the back of her neck for a moment. So far he had been nothing but hospitable, but she couldn't help but wonder how much of it was genuine.

Leaving it for future thought, she acknowledged the dragon with a small bow, unsure if it was appropriate but going with it, nonetheless. “A pleasure to meet you, blue Zeianth.” She pressed her lips together to curb the wide grin wanting to show itself but failed miserably. She gave in, her face splitting into a gigantic smile and spoke back over her shoulder to D’hys. “Thank you both for your time and hospitality. I know I was an unexpected guest, and I hope I didn’t ruin any plans you had for the morning.” Remembering how Edath had enjoyed being scratched, and seeing other riders showing affection to their dragons in such a way, she stepped forward, offering a slightly outstretched hand. “If you have an itch, I’d be happy to oblige you with a scratch in thanks.”

Commenting on her earlier thought, she turned back to D’hys while she waited for a return gesture from the blue, whatever that might look like. “I didn’t know R’dal was a Searchrider…It would be good to see him again.”

Zeianth dipped his head in greeting to the latest girl that D'hys seemed interested in. He had no idea what attracted his rider to someone and it seemed when it came to this one, even D'hys hadn't quite decided why he was bothering. Maybe too much time around Rhaedalyn really was influencing D'hys and it was a genuine act of kindness that was leaving the man baffled. Wouldn't that be amusing, Zeianth thought as he studied the girl--Aederyn.

She had kindness radiating from her as much as she had respect for him. He still didn't speak to her but he did lower his head to her outstretched hand in invitation for her to scratch away wherever she wished. As he did so, he quietly prodded her mind, gently brushing against memories that made up who she was and getting a feel for her emotions and desires.

She would make a good dragonrider, Zeianth confessed to D'hys and knew an outed Search dragon would agree with him. She possessed traits he himself would have been drawn to upon hatching.

D'hys gave a small nod to Zeianth and then gave a look of surprise at Aederyn's admittance. He didn't think R'dal knew how to keep anything to himself with how much the boy talked. "Zeianth, please ask R'dal and Edath to stop by."

Zeianth hated playing messenger. It was beneath him but at least it was to Edath and he liked the young blue. He was another favourite of Halomirth's and he learned to share (and even like it to some degree) her ledge with another blue or two. You and your rider have been requested by mine to put in an appearance at our weyr. Immediately, if you would.

Edath was lazing in the sun when Zeianth reached out to him. His head tilted in confusion at the summons. The older blue never asked him to visit and D'hys definitely didn't ask R'dal to! He asked what it was about but Zeianth only said it would be clear when they arrived. Zeianth and his rider have requested that we go to their weyr immediately. I don't know why, though.

R'dal looked up from the laundry he had been folding. He had washed his clothes the day before but left them on the line over night and was now stuck finishing the chore that morning. He had clearly heard Edath incorrectly. No way did he say D'hys wanted to see him. Why would he want to see him? Why wouldn't he say what the reason was?

It really wasn't too odd for the bluerider to reach out, he supposed. After all, he had helped D'hys out by Searching one of F'drel's sisters... which F'drel wasn't too happy about. And F'drel had said to stay away from D'hys and not to trust him. R'dal frowned at the pile of clothes. he frowned doubly so when he remembered that he was pretty certain he was at least one sock short.

But the bigger issue was going to see another man F'drel warned wasn't what he seemed to be. R'dal still didn't see everyone has negatively as F'drel did but he was trying to! But what if this was another official matter? Maybe another Searchrider was needed or maybe R'nya had asked D'hys to assemble a team to do some super special task and he came to mind! That would be so cool!

We will never know if we don't go, Edath gently pointed out and R'dal quickly chucked aside the shirt he was holding so he could dash out to the ledge. He was so glad he had a level-headed dragon to help him keep focus! It's not an easy task, I assure you.

Moments later and Edath landed on the ledge and gave a trill of excitement when he saw Aederyn.Hello, Aederyn! Edath didn't speak to everyone they met but he liked the redhead and held small conversations with her whenever they could see each other. She always had wonderful tales to tell from her journeys across the land.

R'dal sat in shock at first seeing Aederyn but that quickly passed and turned into excitement as he slid down to the ground and ran over to give his friend his customary hug greeting. "Hi! What are you doing here? Did D'hys kidnap you from the trace and I'm playing the hero here to rescue you?" He gave an exaggerated face of surprise at the idea before giggling at the silliness of it all. No doubt his grumpy greenriding friend would think the same thing but be serious about it.

Gentle but firm fingertips dug in, just above and behind Zeianth’s eye ridge, and the redhead worked them in small circles like she would work a tense muscle after a run. She was careful to watch and feel for any flinch that would tell her the blue was uncomfortable, working the area until Edath swooped to the ledge.

The darker blue greeted her before his rider did, and she didn’t even try to hide her enthusiasm as his deep voice filled her mind for a brief moment, and spoke out loud, still never quite sure if it was appropriate to speak back in mind only. “Hello to you too, Edath! It’s good to see you! You must remind me later to tell you about the shipfish I saw a few months ago.” In case Edath was interested, she concentrated, recalling a detailed image of the creatures dancing among the waves that she had seen on a costal run before her unfortunate visit with family. She always enjoyed their conversations, and while she was sure he had probably seen shipfish while they lived south, it was still a pleasant image and she hoped he would enjoy it. Rudi certainly did, and chittered pleasantly as he dove from his hiding place to greet Edath.

R’dal greeted her with a giant bear hug and she returned it eagerly. She wasn’t usually one for physical contact, but R’dal was just…safe. His strong grip was comforting and she always found herself wishing it lasted just a little bit longer than it did. His words tumbled out of him and she giggled just as he did, assuring him that no, she was fine, though at the mention of being kidnapped by D’hys she couldn’t help but shoot a glance his way, thinking that, no she could outrun him easily.

Straightening and settling herself, she told her short tale. “After an unpleasant, extended visit with family, I returned home to more unpleasantness. My parents are looking to be rid of me and wish to pass me off to be a holder’s problem.” Bitterness rose in her throat and she swallowed hard. It was rather unfortunate, and the man hadn’t been awful, just not what she wanted. “I stupidly ran away, and my feet brought me here. D’hys rescued me before I could get into more foolish trouble. You never told me you were a Searchrider!” She swatted playfully at R’dal’s arm, letting her light laughter take any sting from her words. “Which leads me to my next point…” She offered a small smile back at the other rider before facing R’dal more fully, taking a deep breath to steady herself. This was a massive thing to ask, and she wasn’t sure how he would take the request. Part of her was afraid to know the answer, too, but she was more afraid of simply continuing as she was, without chancing a forward step. “D’hys mentioned joining the Weyr. I can’t move forward in my Craft any more than I already have, and am lucky to have ranked as I do. I don’t want to be stuck in my Craft, and I don’t want to end up stuck somewhere in some hold, where I have no desire to be.” She paused, reordering her thoughts as they started to get away from her. She bit her lip. “D’hys talked about being Searched as a Candidate. And, I was hoping…?” She let her voice trail off, unsure how to continue.

Edath trilled with excitement at the promise for another story and passed along the image to R'dal. They had seen shipfish from a distance when they darted out above the ocean but they never went that far out and the shipfish didn't seem to come in too close to the shore and they ducked under water when he got too close. They were elusive and Edath couldn't wait to hear about them! But it seemed he would have to as Aederyn told a sadder tale and he bumped his head lightly against her chest in comfort.

R'dal was frowning so hard he almost worried his face would get stuck that way. How could family treat each other like that? His own dad didn't know about him or have much to do with him for the first half of his life but even still, M'ris never actively sought to get rid of him or try to make him into something he wasn't. R'dal's own mind did that enough anyway. He kept seeing impressive big shoes to fill and panicked when he Impressed to a cute and chubby blue. But M'ris had said he was proud then and continued to be now.

Of course he also knew not everyone was lucky like that. He had friends who didn't even know who one or both of their parents were, so they definitely weren't wanted but it felt different in his mind. They hadn't grown up supported and loved like Aederyn had been only to have her family turn against her. He didn't interject since it already seemed like it was hard to confess everything, but R'dal vowed to take Aederyn into his friend family and make sure she knew she was loved and welcomed by them all.

"Hey!" R'dal chuckled his way out of his frown that thankfully didn't freeze his face. "I didn't? I thought I did..." he almost pouted again at how he forgot to tell Aederyn his amazing news. He could have sworn he had! Then again, the news had been tainted by a friend's breakdown and he supposed the news didn't seem that important anymore. But that had been so long ago, surely he had said something at the Hatching? He had even Searched a couple of the Candidates and been excited to watch them Stand. But it was Aederyn's first Hatching and he suspected that was overwhelming enough on its own to really notice conversations around her.

Still, why would D'hys bring up that he was a Search...oh! R'dal beamed his biggest smile at her when the unspoken question filled the space between them. "Edath marked you as Searchable the day we met you. Sorry I didn't tell you then. You were so proud of your craft and I didn't want to take you away from it or even make you question it. But we can definitely make it official! Even though we aren't out on a Search with a party but D'hys witnessing it might count and you came to the Weyr and asked so it's probably different rules..." R'dal trailed off as he thought about everything he was taught for the position, a finger tapping his chin.

D'hys still didn't know how to handle R'dal, even after working with the kid to get F'drel's siblings all in order. He was far too innocent, far too energetic, and seemed to see everyone and everything in his own way that D'hys simply couldn't plan for. Even the comment about him kidnapping the girl left him wondering if R'dal believed him capable of such a thing based on information he might know or if he was just joking around and would have said that about his own father.

He actually laughed when it came out that Edath had already Searched the runner and they had somehow kept it a secret. He didn't think it possible for the ball of positivity to keep such good news to himself but D'hys saw the logic behind why he had and why someone like R'dal would see it as bad news and forcing a tough decision on someone that was, at the time, happy with their life.

"I guess that's settled then. Are you ready to make it official? We can take you to meet the people in charge and escort you home to pick up any belongings you might wish to bring with you." He was going to have to sweet talk R'nya to get him to exempt Aederyn from the Healer Hall rule but it shouldn't be a problem, especially if he went through Rhaedalyn first and got her on his side. He'd likely have to still owe a favour to the Weyrleader but D'hys could handle that.

"I'd also be happy to ensure there aren't any complications with them letting you go." They may have been trying to get rid of her, but if they already had plans and deals in motion, there was a strong chance they wouldn't let her go willingly. "This is your decision, Aederyn, not theirs. It's not even ours. You can still say no."

The world swam around her and her eyes went wide as she took the information in. She was Searcheable! She had been, ever since she first met R’dal and Edath! A pang of hurt bit at her stomach for a moment when he said he had kept it from her, but she understood why. He was right, she would have been confused and upset at that time. But then again, she also had thought she could actually do something with her Craft besides become a breeder to produce more Runners, and she wasn’t sure she could even do that. After being berated and looked on as only a silly female by so many at her sister’s new hold, after being treated as goods to barter and trade by her parents and that holder man, after being merely humored for so long, made to think she could do so much with her life by those who had no intention of allowing her to do so, she was done. She would do something. She would prove she was more than just a womb for a holder’s child. She would become a dragonrider. And oh, if she ever returned to station 298 atop her very own dragon!

“No!” She panicked when D’hys said she could still refuse. “No, I mean…Yes! Yes. I want to make it official. I want to stay at they Weyr, and I want to Stand at a Hatching.” She shrugged, a bewildered but happy smile plastered on her face and a sense of determination now about her. She blinked at the thought of how to tell her family. Her brother had always been her best friend and ally. He would be happy and proud. Same with Meri. She didn’t seem to recall her parents having actually promised her in marriage to that young holder, merely suggested it, but then again…She pursed her lips. They might be marginally problematic. But D’hys was right. This was her decision, and hers alone.

She looked again at D’hys. She brought her arms up in a small gesture of helplessness. “But…as you so blatantly pointed out earlier, as a Runner I am hardly useful here.” The previous insult barely stung anymore, instead seeming just silly now that she intended to be giving up the Craft, though that thought of losing her usefulness in something she was so good at did sting. “I could help with first aid, or help others with keeping fit, I…I’ll work in the kitchens if that’s the only job for me. I’ll make myself useful somehow.” She looked between the two riders, not entirely seeking approval or affirmation, but more to try and convey to them that she was now solidly determined to find her place at Fort Weyr. She couldn’t help herself and hugged R’dal again. “Thank you, thank you both so much!”

R'dal eagerly hugged Aederyn. He was relieved she wasn't mad that he hadn't told her on their first meeting and even more relieved that she wanted to stay! He knew how much she loved her craft and saw how much it hurt to admit that she couldn't advance in it and that her family didn't view her the way he did and how he knew his friends would as well. He wished he could make the world perfect for her and let her stay in her craft and run free without any cares but that wasn't possible. The Weyr seemed like the perfect fit for her free-spirit and R'dal hoped she would soon have wings to soar freely on instead.

"I can't wait to tell everyone! We can go find R'dare first, he'll be excited as well. You remember him from the Hatching, right?" Even in his excitement, R'dal had a moment of guilt at abandoning Aederyn to go check on Quinvalis after he was injured. But R'dare had been there and R'dal knew she would have been safe and taken care of. "Then I'll introduce you to everyone else and--"

Don't forget you have to do the official stuff first, Edath chimed in, cutting R'dal off and making the bluerider giggle softly with a hint of embarrassment.

"Or we can do the official stuff first and then if you're up to it, I'll give you a tour and introduce you to a few people." The day was still young but that didn't mean Aederyn would want to socialize with everyone in the Weyr. R'dal also didn't know if she had just come off of delivering a message. Maybe she was exhausted and he was there babbling away and barely refraining from bouncing on the balls of his feet.

This was turning into such an amazing day! And it had started with laundry! Who knew?
