Quinvalis was excited for the Gather for several reasons. He got to see his mom again--though it wasn't like he never saw her since moving to the Weyr, but it was always a great treat to see her. He also got to explore the Gather at his leisure since he wasn't helping serve in the beer tent that his family ran. And, most importantly, he got to see Madiquel again. He hadn't seen his friend since she moved to the Healer Hall and he was so excited to actually talk to her instead of exchanging letters through Clover-mail.

But visiting with Madiquel had to wait since he wanted to see his mom before it got too busy and he knew from R'nya that Madiquel had arrived with one of her classmates so they'd likely be spending time together being girls with shopping or something. That was fine by him since he still wasn't comfortable with being the centre of attention in a group and since Madiquel was so popular, she'd constantly have people around her. He needed to build up the courage to approach her all over again. It had taken months of living at Fort Weyr to even say hello to the pretty girl that seemed so friendly with everyone that there wasn't any indication she'd be anything less with him.

So he spent a little time with his family then moved to meandering through the stalls, not really even browsing as his thoughts were elsewhere. He needed the extra courage to approach Madiquel that day because he wanted to confess his feelings for her. He really liked her and getting a letter from her, even when it only talked about things she was learning that went right over his head, made him smile. He missed her and knew confessing and hopefully hearing her say she liked him as well wouldn't change the fact they'd be kept apart. Still, Quinvalis liked to think maybe they'd write more or maybe he'd even get a ride to visit her sometimes.

When he was ready to find her, he realised he had no way of finding her. Why didn't he have his own firelizard in these situations? Would she be eating? Shopping? Dancing? Hiding with a friend? There were a lot of places to check and his luck dictated they would keep missing each other. Sighing, Quinvalis helped himself to a cup of water at a table near the dance floor, no doubt to inspire people to keep hydrated by some kind soul that wasn't looking to make easy marks. That's when he heard a familiar laugh that he hadn't heard in months and it was music to his ears.

Quinvalis scanned the dancers for Madiquel, ready to run over and greet her when he spotted her dancing with a blonde man. His smile slowly faded as he watched the pair move, laugh, and smile with such ease it was obvious they knew each other, and probably well. He had never met the man but Quinvalis assumed that was A'tay given Madiquel's gushing about her friend Impressing bronze. He also looked a lot like R'nd--he knew the bluerider well given his visits with Rhaedalyn and the girls--so it made even more sense that this was his son A'tay.

He took a moment to study A'tay's face and saw such obvious love for Madiquel there; an expression Quinvalis often thought was on his face though he had never been called out for it so maybe he was better at hiding it. Maybe Madiquel was just being polite and ignoring it because her heart already belonged to A'tay. Tall, blonde, handsome... it was easy to see why she would fall for that and he was done of that.

Without realising it, the hand holding the cup slowly fell to his side, spilling the water on the ground and his shoe. He barely noticed as he felt his heart breaking over the scene playing out before him and eyes beginning to water. He needed to get away before he started crying in front of everyone which would bring shame upon R'nya as his Weyrleader and sort of father figure.

Quinvalis quickly spun around before he was spotted by the happy couple and darted away, but was looking at the ground and not in front of him. Which was why he didn't see the man he ran directly into. The collision sent him a bit off balance and Quinvalis allowed himself to fall back where he fell hard onto his bum and pulled his knees up to his chest and hid his face there. "I'm sorry!" he called out, meaning it, but also afraid he was about to get thumped for daring to run into someone that was likely a lord because that was the only way his misery could be topped.

F’drel had no particular desire to be at the Telgar Gather. He’d gone, of course, because he was Lord Jalazmar and his lady wife’s designated ride, so he had to bring them to the Gather. And they, for whatever their reasons were, had given just about their entire household the day off and permission to attend the Gather. Thankfully, he hadn’t been expected to bring every single person from their household who’d wanted to go, but F’drel preferred to minimize the amount of dragonriders his siblings had contact with wherever possible - what if some random brownrider had been assigned to help him? - so he’d asked R’dal, who of course had been easy enough to convince (if barely asking the question before getting an exuberant ‘yes!’ even counted as convincing). Even though F’drel trusted R’dal not to hurt his siblings or anything like that - the idea was unthinkable - he was very aware of R’dal’s lack of awareness when it came to danger and F’drel worried he might give his younger siblings ideas about how great the Weyrs were that just weren’t the full story, or perhaps say something about F’drel’s life he wasn’t ready for them to know.

He worried about them, his five siblings, and even after Jalazmar, Xyliah, his siblings, and the other various people who worked for them had made it to the Gather grounds, and F’drel was technically relieved of ferrying duty until at least late afternoon, he stayed in case they needed him. Either him as their older brother or him as their ride home, didn’t matter. He wasn’t even really chaperoning them, Kelikki had put herself in charge of that (fair, as she was the oldest, and F’drel had always relied on her steadiness. The girls had gone to one of the tailors - apparently Xyliah had given all her female servants something of a Gather allowance to get themselves something nice, and his sisters all wanted new dresses, adding the marks from Xyliah to some of the marks Kikki gave to F’drel for safekeeping. F’drel had wandered off a bit from the merchant whose wares they were perusing, not in the mood to give his opinion on patterns or colors. Mostly, he worried about Kitelan.

His baby brother, only recently turned ten, had managed to endear himself to Lady Xyliah, who doted on him. This terrified F’drel, afraid of what the overly close connection to the lady - and therefore, her lord husband - could lead to for Kit. At the moment it seemed to be Xyliah bringing him around the Gather with her, spoiling him extravagantly all the while. F’drel didn’t like it one bit, but what could he do? He couldn’t tell Xyliah what she could or couldn’t do with anyone, let alone one of her servants. Kelikki had reassured him a few months back, when he’d first become aware of the lady’s fondness for Kit, that Xyliah meant well and had no hidden intentions for Kitelan. F’drel supposed he should trust her word - she was the oldest, after all, and she’d been put in charge of quite a lot of things in their new household, and he usually trusted her judgment on things, but still… F’drel worried. Proximity to Lords was never a good thing.

It almost made him want to find the nearest Searchrider (maybe R’dal, once he was officially allowed to Search on his own) and claim Kitelan for a Weyr, or even just request for his brother to live with him - he was family and also a child, that wouldn’t be too hard to get approved, right? - but it also brought a whole new set of problems. The Weyrs didn’t have Lords, but they weren’t necessarily all that much safer. And with Miri’s Flights apparently unpredictable still, how could F’drel justify keeping his ten turn old brother with him? There was no good answer. Ultimately, the Weyrs would likely be safer for Kitelan and the others, but… F’drel was still hesitant.

The Weyrs were better than being a drudge in Nabol, true, but they weren’t safe, and his siblings were used to the rules of Holds, they knew how to navigate them. F’drel was still learning all the complexities of Weyrs, and he had been living in them for several turns now. And, more importantly, if any of them came to the Weyr they would probably Stand as Candidates, which meant they might Impress a dragon, and F’drel desperately didn’t want any of them to Impress green. He loved Halomirth, with everything he had, but he didn’t want any of his siblings to be greenriders. It was alright for him, but F’drel wanted better for them. And if they came to live with him in Ista, there was a higher chance the girl would Impress green.

He had another, more selfish reason to not want them in the Weyrs as well; F’drel wanted to keep as many of the bad parts of his life hidden from them as possible. He wanted to keep his family safe from it. And, as much as he hated to admit it, even to himself, he was ashamed of a lot of it. None of them knew how Flights work, and they’d learn if they moved to the Weyrs. As long as they all stayed out of Flights F’drel supposed he’d deal, but the idea of them knowing still made his stomach twist uncomfortably. Only Kikki knew how bad it had gotten for him in Nabol the last few turns, after their mother’s death until he was Searched. And even being a greenrider was better than that, there was no question it was better than that, but… F’drel didn’t really know how to put into words how horrible it all made him feel - the concept of his siblings understanding what Flights meant, of learning how many Weyrfolk considered greenriders to be little better than whores, to name just a few.

F’drel went around in mental circles, having found a place to stand and wait towards the edge of an area set up for eating, going back and forth between wanting to get Kitelan away from the Lord and Lady and being afraid of bringing him to the Weyrs. He was so caught up in his own thoughts he didn’t see anyone approaching until it was too late, and the equally distracted young man walked right into him. F’drel managed to steady himself, but the young man wasn’t so lucky and fell. The apology was muffled by his hands, which he’d brought up to cover his face, and F’drel was almost positive he sounded choked up as if he were trying very hard not to cry. Even with his face covered, F’drel thought he recognized him from Hatchings that Miri had insisted they attend, which meant he was a Candidate. Why was a Candidate rushing through the Gather practically in tears?

“Don’t worry about it,” F’drel said, his worry for Kitelan and his sisters eagerly latching onto this new young person in front of him. He knelt down so he wasn’t looming over the boy; they were out of the high traffic areas, so F’drel didn’t feel a need to try to get him any more off to the side. “Are you alright?” he asked softly, waiting a few feet away for a response before trying to reach out.

Despite the man saying not to worry about it, Quinvalis was worrying about it. He had just ran into someone because he wasn't watching where he was going because he was being pathetic about a girl he liked and his headache was coming back from the stress. So yes, there was a lot to worry about and he hadn't even touched upon whether or not the man was actually being kind or playing with him, waiting to hit him for what he did.

The question still didn't help ease his fears but Quinvalis finally glanced up from his hiding spot of his knees and saw not a lord but a greenrider according to his knots. Frowning, he finally offered a shrug in reply before mentally kicking himself for not speaking. His mom told him he used to be a spirited young child but slowly withdrew into himself after his father died and all the changes in his life. He knew she hoped living in the Weyr would draw him out again and he kind of hoped that as well but he was still incredibly shy and didn't have many friends. Everyone was just so much cooler than him and so much more fun. He never quite felt like he belonged and feeling more at ease helping R'nya and Rhaedalyn likely didn't help that either.

"I'm fine, sir. Please don't trouble yourself over me. I hope I didn't ruin your time here." Quinvalis really wanted to stay where he was on the ground and to be forgotten about so he could sulk and avoid everyone until it was time to meet up for the rides home. But the greenrider had offered his hand in what he assumed was a gesture to get him back to his feet and he couldn't continue being so rude and ignore it. So he slowly took it, still a bit worried he was being trapped and his naivety would be his downfall, and got to his feet.

He didn't meant to but Quinvalis glanced back at the dance floor and winced when he saw the happy couple still dancing. He should have told her his feelings sooner, but would it have mattered? Of course it wouldn't have. Turning back to the greenrider, Quinvalis was hit with guilt again and took in the man's appearance, not seeing anything was spilled or damaged, which was a relief.

"I really am sorry. It was entirely my fault and um do you want a drink? My family runs the tavern here and they do the beer tent every Gather so I can go get you something, including a bowl of their famous stew if you're hungry." He was babbling but he was desperate to make up for his stupidity and the greenrider was so far being kind to him and... that was nice.

The response he got didn’t entirely reassure F’drel that the young man was okay. It was the sort of scripted, obsequious response F’drel often gave himself, and it didn’t convince him the young man was, as he said, fine. Plenty of times he’d given similar answers he’d actually been having a terrible time and just wanted the other person to go away. Though if he was going to run blindly into random Gather-goers, it may be best for someone to make sure he didn’t run into anyone who really would get angry about it. He frowned minutely at being called ‘sir’ - F’drel didn’t think he’d ever been called ‘sir’ before, and he definitely did not like it. The kind of person who got called ‘sir’ was not a good kind of person, in his view.

“I’m no sir, and you didn’t ruin anything,” F’drel said, helping the Candidate to his feet. He didn’t miss the way he looked over at something behind them and winced, but there was so much going on F’drel wasn’t entirely sure what he could have been looking at. There were people eating, dancing, milling about all over the place. He did see A’tay, who was dancing with a girl, but no one else he recognized. It didn’t have anything to do with A’tay, did it? F’drel didn’t think the young bronzerider would ever intentionally upset someone, but what did he know, really. He hoped it was nothing bad involving A’tay, who was the gentlest bronzerider F’drel had ever interacted with. With a last sweep of the area trying to identify the source of the Candidate’s near tears and distraction, F’drel focused back on him.

F’drel shook his head at the offer for a drink or food. He didn’t need either, and he didn’t feel comfortable taking something from this boy’s mother just for being bumped into when nothing bad actually happened to him. “I don’t need anything, thank you for the offer, but I think you might.” Sitting down for a bit and eating or drinking something would hopefully keep the Candidate from running into other people or things or getting in further trouble, especially if he was related to the tavern keepers. “Good to sit down for a few minutes, maybe? Doesn’t have to be at your family’s place if you don’t want it to be.” F’drel wasn’t going to assume the young man wanted to be upset around his family; he hated being anything but put together in front of his younger siblings because he was the older brother, he was supposed to be with it at all times, and some people didn’t like being vulnerable in front of their parents. He didn’t know this Candidate’s situation, though it was probably at least somewhat decent if he was offering to give F’drel something free from them.

Quinvalis wilted at the declining of his offer. He wanted to repay the greenrider for his kindness and make up for being an idiot but that didn’t seem like it was meant to be. Instead, the kindness continued as it was pointed out that perhaps one of them was in need of sitting or something to eat or drink. He supposed he could do with some more water but he didn’t have much of an appetite at the moment. A broken heart didn’t seem like it would want much of anything and Quinvalis had to stop himself from rubbing a hand over his chest as if to massage the broken thing.

He nodded at the offer to sit down somewhere and was about to lead his companion to the beer tent when he hesitated. Did he really want to see his family while he was like this? His cousin would definitely tease him for being such a wuss and possibly even his uncle would join in while his mother would worry and fuss. Where to go then? This was his home turf and Quinvalis didn’t know where to run.

“Maybe not the tent then, but not here either. I want to get away from the dancing and music but I’m not sure where to go, sir.” Quinvalis grimaced as he realised he said it again even after being told not to and quickly added, “I’m sorry! It’s just… you’re a dragonrider and you deserve respect and… I don’t know what else to call you.” He had no problem using ‘sir’ but for some reason, using just ‘greenrider’ seemed almost demeaning in his mind. If it was attached with the rider’s name, it was a proper title but otherwise, it seemed like he didn’t bother to learn a name or he only viewed them as that rank and not as an entire person with different aspects.

“But it’s okay! I’ll be fine and you should go back to enjoying yourself.” He really felt like he was putting the man out the more he spoke and that simply wouldn’t do. “I think I’ll find an early ride back to Fort. I’m not very jubilant today.”

“Ah, F’drel of Halomirth,” F’drel said, having forgotten he never gave his name until the Candidate - whose name he didn’t know either - mentioned it. “F’drel is fine,” he added, just to make sure he gave direct permission to use his name. It was such a Holdbred Candidate thing to consider a greenrider deserving of respect. In Nabol, the drudges and servants considered all dragonriders impressive and were always respectful and a little scared since most of them knew little of dragons or their riders beyond gossip, but most Candidates got over that quickly once they’d been in the Weyrs more than a month or two. F’drel wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about it, but he supposed it spoke well of Quinvalis - who had given his name after F’drel had.

“If you want somewhere quieter to sit down, you’re welcome to sit by Halomirth. She’d be happy to let you sit with her for a bit,” he offered. Miri suggested it to him when she picked up her name being mentioned in his introduction and turned her attention to him to find out what was going on. She decided Quinvalis looked sweet and she’d like to meet him. “She says she’ll give you a ride back to Fort as well, though we won’t be offended if you don’t want to ride with someone you just met.” F’drel knew he wouldn’t want to, and would try to get out of it without offending the person. He didn’t want to make Quinvalis uncomfortable, and wanted to make sure he had an easy out if he wanted to take it.

“I’d like that. Thank you, F’drel,” Quinvalis forgot his nerves and worry that he was being a bother as he smiled at the offer to sit with the dragon. He loved dragons, obviously given he was Searched and enthusiastically packed right after, but he didn’t get to talk to too many of them. Again, that was part of his shyness and his worry he’d get in trouble for approaching someone’s dragon so he usually only chatted with Aradissicath and Xyreith. Well, he talked to Xyreith and sometimes the bronze indulged him enough to give a nod or snort but he never spoke. R’nya had told him long ago that Xyreith didn’t speak to any other human but him and only a couple of times to Rhaedalyn.

“Oh, you don’t have to do that!” Quinvalis was quickly back to fussing over someone fussing over him. “I’m okay just sitting with her but I guess if you don’t mind, as long as Halmorith can let Aradissicath or Xyreith know I’m leaving so Rhaedalyn and R’nya don’t worry about me.” He knew he wouldn’t have to give his mother notice, mostly because R’nya would pass it on once he knew just to make sure Quilriana was in the know. He’d feel a bit bad about suddenly ditching without saying good bye, but it wasn’t like he never got to see her and would apologise profusely on the next visit.

He followed F’drel to the field dragons were lounging in and his eyes lit up when they stopped by a green dragon. His current troubles were momentarily forgotten as he took in every detail about her beautiful dark hide and smiling as he saw the light patch on her neck. She was so subtle but she wore it well and it made her stand out. He’d never get tired of meeting new dragons—heck, just seeing them. They were all so unique in size, shape, colour, and personality.

“Nice to meet you, Halomirth,” he reached out to touch her, pet her in greeting, but he hesitated. Was it rude to just touch someone’s dragon? Maybe the dragon didn’t like strangers pawing them so he put his hand back down.

“I don’t mind at all,” F’drel assured Quinvalis, because he would be very happy to leave the Gather for a little while, even to visit Fort, “and I’ll make sure she lets one of them know.” Probably Aradissicath, because despite never having met R’nya, F’drel was very dubious about him. To start he was a bronzerider and Weyrleader, and nothing he’d ever heard about the man reassured him in any way. F’drel recognized Quinvalis’ name, after all, even if it took him a moment to place it; it was his sister R’nya had Searched as part of R’dal’s Searchrider ‘test’ that was almost certainly a front for getting the girl in Fort. Nothing suspicious there at all. Though none of that was Quinvalis’ fault, and F’drel wasn’t going to put any of it on the Candidate. Still, he wasn’t going to have Miri talk to Xyreith unless they had no other choice.

It didn’t take long to reach Halomirth, who’d been lounging with Edath since they’d finished bringing people for Jalazmar, and F’drel briefly introduced Quinvalis to her. He appreciated how excited Quinvalis was to meet her - Miri was always enthusiastic about making new friends, and while most people and dragons seemed to like her, F’drel was always relieved when people responded positively to her.

Halomirth almost wiggled in anticipation of making a new friend, ducking her head so that she was a little closer to Quinvalis as he said hello. Hello! It’s nice to meet you too! You can pat me if you like, she said cheerfully, tilting her head so that if he wanted Quinvalis had excellent access to give her headknob scratches. Pats and scratches were good, and Quinvalis looked like he’d be good at giving them. Halomirth had a good instinct for these things. F’drel refrained from rolling his eyes at her and leaned against one of her forelegs, keeping an eye on Quinvalis to confirm he was getting along with Miri (not that he really thought they wouldn’t).

Quinvalis smiled again and nodded that he most certainly would like to pet her as he reached for the spot that Halomirth obviously wanted petted. His touch was light, which meant it was likely hardly even felt by the dragon but he didn’t want to do it wrong and upset her, especially given how nice she was! It was still weird having a dragon speak to him no matter how many times Aradissicath had done so when she called for him to help R’nya or when he attended her story times. This was a new dragon that deemed him worthy enough to speak to. Sometimes he wished he was as outgoing and could just approach people without hesitation and fear.

“Thank you,” he whispered, figuring it’d be rude to speak too loudly close to her head since her hearing was amazing. Quinvalis would have continued petting her for hours, finding the act soothing but he really did want to sit down and took a few steps back to plop himself down on the ground in a spot where he could easily see Halomirth and vice versa. He fiddled with his necklace for a few moments, considering if he should say what was on his mind or not. Dragons were so much easier to talk to, maybe because they could know everything if they wanted to poke at his mind. He hadn’t forgotten F’drel was still there, but Quinvalis kept his attention more on Halomirth as he let out a large breath and went for it.

“I struggle to talk to people. I’m… nothing special,” it was hard to put his feelings into words no matter who he was speaking to, apparently. Quinvalis hesitated again wondering if he should skip the backstory and jump right into the current day’s drama that had him running into F’drel. Given the pair’s kindness, he didn’t want to bore him with his family troubles and went just for the reason of the day.

“I liked a girl and it took me months to even do more than greet her. Then we became friends and I still couldn’t confess. I was finally going to tell her today but I was too late. She’s with someone a lot more special.” Quinvalis gave a little self-deprecating laugh and then sighed, waiting to hear how silly he really was for behaving like he had over a girl that didn’t even like him.

Halomirth rumbled happily, delighted by the petting no matter how light it may have been. She had been right, Quinvalis was good at pets - as usual, her instinct on the matter was correct. It was mildly disappointing when he stopped, but that was okay because it looked like he needed to sit down. Halomirth listened intently as Quinvalis explained why he was feeling upset, crooning every so often in reassurance that she was paying attention and cared about what he was saying. By the time he was finished, ending with a sigh, Halomirth had shifted so that her head was resting on the ground beside Quinvalis so he could continue petting her head of he wanted to. Having let him say what he needed to for the moment, she spoke up.

You seem pretty special to me, she said, gently brushing his leg with her nose, And struggling to talk with people doesn’t mean you’re not special. My rider has a lot of trouble talking with people, and he’s very special. F’drel sighed softly, though he didn’t argue. It was true that he was terrible at communication, and in this case he didn’t mind Halomirth telling Quinvalis that about him. Though if she got too personal he may have to stop her. For the moment, though, F’drel was content to just let Miri chat with Quinvalis.

I’m sorry, Halomirth said softly, Are you sure it’s too late? You said you were friends, so she clearly likes you, and you are special. If you haven’t asked her, how can you be sure? The situation confused her. If they were friends why wouldn’t she know Quinvalis liked her?

’Fly-like, Miri,’ F’drel thought at her by way of explanation, and Halomirth made a noise of understanding, though she was still a little puzzled. If he hadn’t chased her even though he wanted to and someone else caught her, he could still be with her, couldn’t he? She didn’t fully understand how human relationships worked, and F’drel wasn’t overly helpful on the matter. He didn’t like talking about it and said he wasn’t in any, though he let D’hys catch him sometimes (’End of that line of thought, Miri, thank you,’) and he hadn’t dated or been mated to anyone so Halomirth had no first hand span of reference for this sort of problem. Halomirth hummed, thinking.

I don’t think you can say for sure she’s not interested in being with you until you’ve talked to her, she decided after a moment of consideration.

Quinvalis gave a weak smile at the praise he received from Halomirth and returned to petting her since she seemed to like it as much as he did. It was nice to know a dragon found him special but it still didn't change the way he viewed himself. He spent the last ten or more years being told he wasn't special or a waste of space by extended family. His mother's love and even his little sister looking up to him were the only things that kept him trying his hardest to prove he could at least be helpful to those better than him.

"Oh, it's pretty obvious, but thanks for trying to cheer me up. They're meant to be, Halomirth. I never believed it until I finally saw them together, no matter how much she talked about him. They grew up together and he's a bronzerider and she'll probably Impress to gold and they'll live happily ever after like in Rhaedalyn's stories." He was starting to hate those stories now that he knew he'd never be the prince or hero that got the girl they loved. He wasn't even the villain-- more like the minion that slowed the hero down for all of thirty seconds.

His eyes started watering again and he looked up at the sky, willing himself not to cry, not in front of the green pair that so far hadn't judged him poorly. Well, at least in his hearing. Who knew what private conversations were being had but he'd take what he could. "I'm being silly, I know," he whispered and returned his attention to his task of rubbing the head knob once his vision wasn't so blurry. "And I'll be happy for her tomorrow. But today, I think I want to hide and wallow in self-pity." He'd probably do that a lot longer than just for one day but Quinvalis didn't want to depress the sweet dragon too much. A show that he was going to be all right was a lot better for her.

Halomirth whined softly, not sure how best to comfort Quinvalis. As she understood things, even if the girl Quinvalis liked and the bronzerider were mates, that didn’t mean Quinvalis was out of luck - look at Larrikith and Ayyonth! Really, Halomirth didn’t understand why so many were fixed on this idea you could only really like one individual, only have a single mate. It just seemed silly to her. If you liked someone and wanted to be with them you should be able to do so! She nuzzled into Quinvalis, hoping he got some reassurance from it.

If you say so, Halomirth said dubiously, not fully convinced it was as hopeless as he thought, but what did she know about the situation, really. I don’t think you’re being silly, Quinvalis. Having emotions isn’t silly. F’drel agrees with me, right F’drel? she said confidently, knowing her rider agreed with her but feeling Quinvalis could do with hearing it from him as well as from her.

“Huh?” F’drel said eloquently. He’d been wondering if the bronzerider Quinvalis mentioned had been A’tay. The young bronzerider had been in the area where Quinvalis had run into him and had been dancing with a girl at the time, so it was possible. A’tay had mentioned liking a girl before. Was Quinvalis’ girl he liked the same as A’tay’s? As F’drel remembered it, A’tay thought the girl he liked didn’t like him back. Had she proven him wrong? Was this a different girl? F’drel didn’t know. He didn’t think he’d ever had a crush before, actually, and was a bit befuddled by how it worked. It took him a few seconds to pull himself from his thoughts and process what Miri said, then he nodded. “Right, it’s not silly to get upset about things that matter to you.” Halomirth rumbled in agreement.

You are welcome to hide with me as long as you like, she told Quinvalis, adjusting so that she was curled a bit more around him, a protective barrier against the world at large. F’drel, who had stepped away from leaning against Miri’s leg as soon as he’d sensed her intent to move, nodded to confirm her statement.

“If you want a ride to Fort we can take you whenever you like. If you want to sit with Miri a bit, let me know if you want me to stick around or not. Miri’ll call me whenever you’re ready to head out,” he added to her offer, hovering awkwardly at his dragon’s side as he waited to hear what Quinvalis wanted to do.

"Really? Thank you!" Quinvalis was ready to head home now and hide out in his room, he didn't expect to be offered a chance to hang out longer with Halomirth--and F'drel if the greenrider wanted to stay. He laughed when Halomirth shifted to better curl up around him and Quinvalis finally gave in to giving her a hug of sorts around her neck. Even the smaller dragons were still large enough to make such gestures awkward or perhaps weird. Like his petting her, what did a hug feel like to her? Was it still comforting and nice? Did she feel it? Did it feel like when a fly landed on his arm? Maybe he'd get around to asking her such things once he decided she wouldn't mind playing twenty questions.

"And thank you for letting me talk with Halomirth, F'drel," Quinvalis shyly glanced around Halomirth to offer a smile to the greenrider. He knew some dragons hated speaking to anyone that wasn't their rider and some riders didn't appreciate people trying to strike up a conversation with their dragon. He didn't think F'drel minded since he said Halomirth had invited them over to begin with and wasn't putting an end to the serious talk but he wanted to show his appreciation all the same. F'drel didn't even have to help him off the ground but here they were listening to his romantic drama. Dragonriders really were the best.

"You know, I can't even bring myself to hate A'tay. Everyone speaks well of him and he'll treat Madiquel right and I don't want to confess to her now and put her in the middle and make it awkward. She'd obviously choose him and then our friendship will suffer..." if Madiquel hadn't noticed his interest before, she wouldn't notice now, especially if he tried his best to kill off the attraction. Quinvalis knew he'd still be happy with her friendship and would spend the next few days convincing himself anything more may have ruined what they already had. But it did still hurt that she never noticed and clearly didn't like him as more than a friend.

The hug from Quinvalis had Halomirth brightening immediately. He had accepted what they were saying, obviously, which was good! She gave another happy rumble, the vibrations from which Quinvalis could probably feel through the hug. Hopefully he would feel better soon. Halomirth really hoped he did, he was sweet and should be happy.

F’drel shrugged, trying to brush off Quinvalis’ thanks. He’d done nothing, after all. “Miri speaks with who she likes, I didn’t let anything.” As if he could have stopped her from talking with whomever she pleased. Most dragons, apparently, spoke with their rider and a few close others, but Halomirth spoke with near everyone she met, friendly thing. Though greens were often chattier than other colors, or so F’drel had been told a time or two.

He was interested to know the bronzerider Quinvalis referred to was, in fact, A’tay. Even so, the thought of A’tay being in a relationship with a girl - Madiquel - seemed a bit unlikely to F’drel, for reasons he couldn’t quite express. He was finding it difficult to reconcile A’tay having a girlfriend with how afraid he’d been of being in a Flight. Not that having a girlfriend and participating in a Flight were anywhere near the same things, it still seemed odd to him. Though really, he didn’t know A’tay that well, so what could he really say on the matter? Halomirth crooned softly, not sure how to respond to the new information. She was one of the ‘everyone’ who spoke well of the bronzerider, after all; she quite liked him and Xyxyth! But Quinvalis was upset, and Halomirth had decided she liked him too, which meant the interests of two people she liked conflicted. And she didn’t even think they had to conflict in the first place, but she supposed she didn’t know as much about human relationships as they did. But she could still offer comfort and someone to talk to and a nice place to hide, and she would!

F’drel hovered awkwardly, not sure what to say to Quinvalis - both because he was terrible at relationship advice and because he didn’t know enough about the situation at hand - and Quinvalis had not clearly said whether he would prefer F’drel to stay or go. Unsure, F’drel sat down against Miri’s side, living a good deal of space between him and Quinvalis without seeming like he was actively trying to be as far from him as possible. He just didn’t want to crowd the Candidate or make him feel uncomfortable.
