He heard Mylorah begin screaming and his head snapped her direction. He hadn’t noticed when Narinoa ran, but her agonizing cry tore at his heart and pulled him from his own misery. Beckitt carefully side-stepped the next egg in the line, rushing to her side and getting there just after Kordiavis. “Mylo?” He grasped her shoulder gently but firmly. “Mylo, it’s okay. Its Kitt. Your Hummingbird. It’s going to be okay. It’s just in your head, it’s not.. real.” He glanced uncertainly back over his shoulder at the eggs.
“Mylo, just breathe with me.” He tried to help her breathe slowly and come back out of it but found himself just as unsteady. “Do you want to leave? You don’t have to stay,” he whispered, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as the Weyrlingmaster came over.
He wasn’t sure he wanted to stay, after this. But he saw the horror and pain and shame on Casa and Nerreh’s faces and knew he would try to grit his teeth and get through the touching.
