There was no real reason for Nerreh to pay attention to gold Flights. Gossip and sordid details, sure, but you got that from other people at the end, you didn’t have to watch or get dangerously close to the action. The only reason Nerreh had given any thought at all to the impending Flight was because it was Casa and they had grown up together, kinda, so it at least registered as something that happened. She’d noticed when N’mor and T’ryn had won Flights, and Nerreh figured some of their other age-mates had started winning or being won in Flights by then, she’d just not heard of it because green Flights were hardly the same source of gossip. At least not in Nerreh’s circles.
So when Thallyath decided to announce to the Weyr it was her time to shine (quite literally), Nerreh figured she’d go to the kitchens and snag plenty of whatever dessert they had, with the assumption people were too, ah, distracted, by Thally’s Flight to go to dinner just then. She stood up from where she’d been lazing on their new weyr ledge with Faxxonth and dusted off her pants (Nerreh had cleaned the place when they’d moved in, but it had been unused for turns and there was still plenty of dust everywhere, even after Nerreh’s admittedly half-hearted cleaning), turning to give Faxx a pat on the shoulder before she headed off for food. Nerreh paused, watching her dragon, who seemed very intrigued by this gold Flight business.
“What’re you thinking?” Nerreh asked, eyeing Faxxonth suspiciously. She had a good idea what the young dragon was thinking, but some confirmation would be appreciated.
Everyone pays attention to gold Flights, don’t they, Faxx said mildly, watching bronzes and browns begin to circle around Thallyath on the ground. Nerreh snorted.
“What, you wanna show off?” Faxxonth stretched his front legs out in front of him, considering the shiny gold.
Maybe. It’d be nice to have a real reason to fly. Nerreh laughed at him. “Your reason is still showing off, there’s just another goal behind it.” Faxxonth gave his strange dragon shrug, a slight rise and fall of his wings. It’ll make a lot of people realize I’m blue now Nerreh stared at him. Oh. It would do that, wouldn't it? It was a pretty easy way to announce it, actually. Maiden gold Flight, so people would be watching, they’d see him. Not that most people would pay attention, probably, but there weren’t that many blues who chased gold, so some people would surely notice and ask who that blue was. Though for some people Nerreh doubted even seeing Faxx fly would be enough to convince them he was blue. She told Faxx as much, and he snorted.
If they prefer to think I’m a green who fancies golds, they’re welcome to do so. Nerreh laughed.
“With their options a girl on blue and a gay green, I wonder which people will choose,” she wondered, joining Faxx in watching Thallyath. She really was pretty, wasn’t she? And all those bronzes and browns were probably uncreative and boring. Oh, wait, no, there was Syrendryth. And Xyxyth? “Looks like you’ll be up against a few clutchmates, kiddo,” Nerreh said, wondering how A’tay was doing. He was a bit young for Flights still, wasn’t he? Well, Xyxyth probably knew if ‘Tay was ready or not, Nerreh supposed. Worrying about him or anyone else didn’t seem all that important just then. Flying was important. Nerreh’s vision blurred for a moment, as if she was standing slightly to her left. Where Faxxonth was, standing now and lazily stretching out. Well. This whole Flight thing was interesting.
“So, we’re really doing this?” Nerreh asked, still slightly unsure, even now that she could feel Faxxonth’s lust going through her. She hadn’t even noticed it at first, which she vaguely wondered if that was a sign she really should be getting laid if she was apparently low-level horny all the time. If she was lucky she could find a pretty Flight mothing girl and not a fellow male loser. Not that Nerreh didn’t like boys, in theory, but the idea of having sex with one — especially as part of a Flight — just felt kind of gross. What if they treated her like a girl? No. Icky. Hopefully she’d get lucky twice over instead.
I think it’s about time for my entrance. Faxxonth sauntered over to where the ledge gave way to air, flicking his tail from side to side in anticipation, eyes still fixed on Thallyath. He launched himself into the air, and as soon as his feet left the stone beneath them Nerreh was gone too, out into the halls to reach wherever Casa was.
