In general, F’drel had no issues with silences. Companionable silences were perfectly enjoyable, but the important factor there was knowing that it was a companionable silence and the other person wasn’t expecting you to do something. With R’dal, for example, F’drel could usually be sure the bluerider wasn’t waiting for a particular reaction and he could just stay quiet until R’dal decided to start talking again. With T’ryn, F’drel didn’t have the same understanding of when a response was wanted, so he sat stiffly and waited for a better idea of why T’ryn was being quiet. Was he talking to his dragon, or waiting for F’drel to say something, or what?
Thankfully, it didn’t seem like T’ryn was waiting for any sort of response and had just been thinking. F’drel’s shoulders relaxed just a fraction, relieved he didn’t seem to need to say anything.
“Happens,” he shrugged, not wanting to give T’ryn the impression that silence was bad, because now that he knew T’ryn got distracted with his own thoughts it meant that prolonged silences were safe, and extended periods where he didn’t need to say or do anything were just fine by F’drel, “don’t worry about it.”
And then he didn’t know what else to say, so he focused on Halomirth who seemed to be ‘ooh’ing and ‘ah’ing as Syrendryth caught fish and she tried very hard not to scare all the fish away by wiggling in excitement. How exciting.
