Month 12, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Winter -3 - 2 C | 26 - 35 F
Fort is already home to snowfalls, though early in the month they fade away when the sun rises. As the month progresses, more snow stays on the ground, ending up with several feet of snow before the month is over. The areas around homes and populations has the snow shoveled away or trodden down. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove some danger and are routinely removed.

Ista Boundaries:
Winter, 9 - 21 C | 48 - 69 F
Generally warm enough to go about without a jacket on, Ista has low humidity but high chance of rain, generally in the form of vicious afternoon thunderstorms. The storms wash away any bite of heat the day had, and leave it feeling fresh for the night. The days are short, but grow bright quickly and the afternoons seem to be particularly short when heavy thunderstorms roll in and cover the sky.

Telgar Boundaries:
Winter, -5 - 0 C | 23 - 32 F
Bitterly cold, with icy winds constantly flowing down from the mountains. Freezing rain is almost constant; the sky always a murky grey and the ground slippery with slushy refrozen ice. The days are extremely short, with the nights dropping a good number below the daily average. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove a major danger, and are checked upon every day, with anything bigger than a fist being removed.

Month 07, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Summer 27 - 38 C | 80 - 100 F
Light breezes down from the mountains tot he North keep the temperature comfortable, even when the sun can bake an egg on the edge of a weyr. Sunburn is common.

Ista Boundaries:
Summer, 34 - 43 C | 93 - 110 F
A very dry, dusty heat. Little to no rain, causing more than some to worry about the drought not breaking and the rest of the Isle being at risk of fires. Many seek the depths of weyr, hold or hall during the midday and early afternoon heat.

Telgar Boundaries:
Summer, 26 - 35 C | 79 - 95 F
Muggy, sticky and generally just plain humid. Thunder storms are regular occurances, often happening in the early afternoon or evening, with heavy rainfall before drying off sometime in the night. Mornings are usually crisp, but warm up swiftly.

[[Update slowly in progress because ThistleProse is a slackarse :3 lmao ]]

Month 04, 740 AL
North: Early Spring | South: Early Autumn
−1.9 C to 4.7 C | 20.0 C to 29.0

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself naturally warmer, (~10C / 50) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Katila is beginning to cool down to more reasonable temperature, but is no less muggy and uncomfortable to those who are not used to the seasons. It is still a good place to escape to when seeking a warm day or a nice swim at the lake, though.

The Red Star can be seen by those who choose to see it, causing no shortage of whispers that Thread will return - and just as much dismissal from those who do not believe. After all, it's been so long, surely it is no longer a threat! Weyrleaders are, regardless, beginning to put together wings in their Weyrs, if only to keep troublesome and bored riders busy.

Month 03, 740 AL

Month 12, 739 AL
North: Early Winter| South: Early Summer
-3.1 to 2.1 C | 20.4 C to 29.4 C

Winter has come slowly to the Northern lands of Pern, with more rain and cold winds than snow. As the month progresses, more and more snow will fall, with frequent blizzard-like storms towards the very end of the month. Telgar and Fort will in particular become burried under mountains of snow, while Ista is sunjected to frequent icy rainstorms, and heavy winds coming in from across the ocean.

13.4 to 21.0 C | 13.8 C to 25.6 C

Following the disastrous fires (sometime in around the 28th of Month 08), Ista Isle has found itself suddenly in the midst of constant rain; not enough to flood, but a steady, dreary downfall that seems to only take a time out for a couple of hours here and there, before coming back again. Its cast the entire sooty Isle into a sombre and depressed mood. Alongside the rain, the weather is muggy and while not hot, is not particularly cool, either.

The rest of Northern Pern is getting their usual weather, though they, too, have been called to action following the wildfires that savaged Ista. Many individuals who called Ista Island home have been relocated not just to Ista Weyr, Ista Hold or Sea Cliff Hold, but also to other areas of Pern, whether with family or friends.

Month 08, 739 AL
North: Late Summer | South: Late Winter
17.4 to 25.5 C | 10.8 C to 23.2 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm - 37 to 45 C - has resulted in an incredibly dry summer, with little to no rain. This was climaxed by a dry thunderstorm, the results of which caused three fires to start across the Island on the 24.07.739 in the early morning hours. While the results of this are yet to be played out, the events will no doubt leave more than just the scarring of the land.

Month 07, 739 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter
18.0 to 26.6 C | 10.2 C to 21.9 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm, with average weather being in the 37 to 45 C range, making it now a more than slightly undesirable escape for the rest of the Northern population from the more enjoyable early summer weather. There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind. Ista's limited farmlands and fields are dry and dusty, with golden straw instead of grass where there is any growth at all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are still getting a lot of evening rain and the occasional thunderstorms, which cools down the populus and allows them to sleep easily without sweating their brains out like the Istans.

There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are getting a lot of rain, thunderstorms, and cloudy days. Grass is growing, flowers flowering, and baby animals popping up all over the place! Yay spring!

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. Month 11, 738 AL
North: Late Autumn | South: Late Spring

Autumn is coming to an end, with the days slowly becoming shorter still, with early nights and late mornings. The temperature is getting very cool, with jackets being more required, but it has yet to actually snow. Despite this, it is often raining and miserable.

The Southern contient is in full bloom, with flowers coming to life in the grasses and on the trees. The skies are bright blue with fluffy clouds, and occassional sunshowers bringing a dampness to the day. The nights are still crisp, but not cold. The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 10, 738 AL
North: Mid Autumn | South: Mid Spring

Autumn is in full tilt, with the leaves a shocking array of orange and red, and more of them on the ground than on the trees. The skies are often a clear and crisp blue, with a cool breeze flowing, shifting the leaves and sending them scattering. Rain is not common, but when it does roll in the skies are dark like night come early, and thunderstorms are not uncommon, though they don't last for long and the amount of rain that falls isn't too heavy.

Month 09, 738 AL
North: Start Autumn | South: Start Spring

Nothern regions are entering into Autumn, with the trees beginning to change to their reds and oranges, while the air is beginning to feel more crips. There are still more warm days than cool, and the nights are mostly warm enough for light bedding still. Rain has faded away and most days are clear and bright.

The Southern contient finds itself heading into spring, with rain and flowers vying for attention. The ground is often muddy and squishy, while the skies are either bright and blue, or overcast wtih fluffy clouds.

Month 08, 738 AL
North: End Summer | South: End Winter

Summer is winding to an end in the Northern hemisphere, with the weather slowly cooling and the trees beginning to turn their leaves. The days are still long and bright, but the sun is beginning to lose some of its strength.

The coastal Weyrs are falling victim to coastal storms, strong winds and heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

The more inbound Weyrs and Holds find themselves drier, not getting nearly as much rain or storms, they find themselves on the end of a long drought.

Month 07, 738 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter

Summer is in full spring in the Nothern hemisphere, with the bulk of each day being unbearbly hot, followed by vicious thunderstorms and heavy humidity in the evenings and at night.

The coastal areas are experiencing monsoon like weather, and spend a lot of their time locked away in Hold, Hall or Weyr.

The more inner locations find themselves faced with more dry heat during the day, and horrible humidity in the evening and at night while the thunderstorms rage.

ITS AN UPDATE! HOORAH!

I'm not dead, my loves! This month's Event is 'Close Call!' - have fun! Stamps will be uploaded and on display in our Discord chatroom.

There is a topic here for discussion about Pernese religions and belief systems, including in and out of Weyr opinions (variably and as a whole) in regards to delicate matters, such as birth, death, and the afterlife. Also, ghosts anyone? Now I'm imagining a giant arse dragon ghost....

Healer Hall is accepting Gold Candidates (just from Fort, for now) and R'nya will soon be discussing with his Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn the merits of bringing in additional female candidates.... on the condition they are approved for Healer Apprenticeship...

Thallyath, Casa's little gold dragon, will be taking to the skies for her maiden flight in the first week of April (IC date will be 740-04-01) and while a mate is already decided, this clutch will be PC and more candidates are ALWAYS welcome, whether you want them to Impress this round --- or not!

September 2018

Spring is here! ... In Australia, anyway!

This month’s riveting event is ‘Seas of Fun’, in honour of International Pirate’s Day! After all the drama with the fires, we expect that taking to the sea (or lake, river, pond, etc) would be a very relaxing way to spend some downtime for many dragonriders and Holderfolk alike!

In preparation for October, the even is “Memories of the Past”, which we hope will be a fun way to explore your character’s past, either in solo posts or threads, as inner monolog or as back posting! How you choose to partake is entirely up to you!

October will also see our next PC HATCHING! In order to have your Candidate qualify for Impression, they must have no less than 20 posts! There are lots of characters floating around who would be more than happy to help your Candidate breech that count! Don’t forget to also UPDATE YOUR APPLICATIONS where applicable, or make sure it is submitted at all! We can’t Impress your character if we don’t know what they should be getting!

As always, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

If you haven't already, please drop by the Dragonrider Weyr Allocations thread, and let us know where your dragonriders call home. We are hoping to set up Wings across the three PC Weyrs over the next month or so, and your assistance is much appreciated! As a result, we will be looking for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and of course Candidates for the clutches we have scheduled for this year!

August 2018

ITS AUGUST! Do you know what that means? It means its less than 4 months until Christmas! OMG.

Okay. So moving on! This month sees us (hopefully) wrapping up the Camp Kink event! Who doesn’t love an abundance of young adults exploring their sexuality without restraint? Its been a hell of a fun ride (haha get it?) so far! Can’t wait to see what the grapevine makes of it when words gets out … haha!

On a more serious note, this month will see us engaging in the Istan Wildfires! This event is a free for all! Feel free to have your characters interact with the event in any way you feel is suitable! There is a lot of room here for personal dramas, trouble making, hero worshiping, etcetera! We really want to see how characters interact with, and dictate, the outcome of the event!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

July 2018

July was July-y.

June 2018

Welcome to the new month! Like always, I'm slack in getting the update up and running, but here it is! This month we have the event 'Summer Fling' - [Link] - which is turning out to be all kinds of entertaining already! Remember, it doesn't have to include smut! It could be an innocent date with some - *gasp* - hand holding!

This month also saw Gold Bedith of Mulrissa take to the skies! She was won by young Syrendryth of T'ryn! Congrats, and may your Hatching be less dramatic than the last one! The Hatching will take place in October so you have a lot of time to get Candidates created, approved, and posting up a storm!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

April 2018

Well, it’s halfway through the month which shows you how awful I am at keeping this stuff up to date, haha. Due to my slackness, there is no event this month, but the month of May will be hosting ’Lost Belongings’ wherein characters should find something they – or someone else – lost.

In the meantime, gold Okalinath of Kahleena has taken to the skies! You can find her Flight thread taking place on the 4th, here Currently, there is no planned winner, so be sure to throw your bronzes and browns her way! They do not need to be natives to Telgar Weyr to participate!

March 2018

Welcome to March, my friends!

Unfortunately, this month we don’t have any events set up, so we encourage you to wrap up threads and create some personal plots! Next month will be bringing in a new monthly event (Lost Belongings!) so you can always set your character up for that! If you have ideas for future Events, you can submit them here!. Additionally, you can see upcoming events here!

Speaking of new threads, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! January 2018

Welcome to the New Year, one and all! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday season, and we can't wait to see what your characters will get up to over the next twelve months (and beyond!). The Secret Santa Event has been extended until the 30th of January, so for those of you (like me!) who were busy over the end of December, we hope you can get your threads up and running over the next few weeks! There has been a lot of interesting interactions so far! As we extended the SSE, there won't be a specific January event this month! Don't worry though, we have something up our sleeve for February!

We officially have two layouts! You can post here with any issues you find, or request any changes!

May 2017

Progress has slowed down a little, due to RL events (yay promotions! Boo no internet!) but we're getting back on track! Documents are still being written and we've put together a FAQs page, though its likely to recieve a lot of adjustments as we come across things. The current goal is to have everything set up and ready by July, but we'll see how well we go at that. And by we, I mean ThistleProse. lol.

April 2017

The layout is almost complete, but there is still a lot of work to be done; documents are being written up and can be found in the Site Map menu opion. Players can begin to move their characters' information to their Account Profiles, but be aware some changes may still be made and/or added.
If you find any bugs or issues, plese repot them here, and we will do our best to fix them in a timely manner.

It had been a couple of weeks since the Hatching and T’ryn was still thinking about it regularly. It had been Syrendryth’s first clutch, so that alone would have warranted his attention for a while, but that had been overshadowed by death. A lot of death. Images of those poor people dying and others fleeing in terror had haunted his dreams for several nights before a long conversation with Syrendryth helped him let go of a lot of the guilt. They weren’t responsible for what happened and no one could predict it would go so horribly wrong. Everyone knew Hatchings could be dangerous and everyone still attended whether as a Candidate or a spectator. The only blame that could be tossed their way, which T’ryn thought was unfair but it didn’t bother his dragon any, was that it was Syrendryth’s fault for producing such dragonets with more violent tendencies than others. He was a clutchmate to Rhezalth so clearly something went wrong with them. So far no one had mentioned banning them from chasing golds—though T’ryn would have happily obliged if they had been.

Syrendryth also did his best to remind T’ryn of the way he handled the crisis and helped calm people and get them organized again. After all was said and done and the shock of the night was over –and he had slept—T’ryn was proud of himself. It had taken a little encouraging from his sister to get his act together but he was proud of what he did do once he got moving. It felt good and it felt right. Syrendryth said that was what a good Weyrleader was like but T’ryn refused to go there. He felt that was a good Wingleader, leading a group of people in a high emotions situation. He had worked out the best course of action and ensured others followed it. That’s what interested him with the wings and that was still what he would pursue. N’mor and other bronzeriders could fight for Weyrleader positions when the chance arose.

Now that he had moved passed the drama and trauma of that night, which had sent him into being a bit of a recluse again, T’ryn was ready to face the world once more and he wanted to do it with friends. There was one friend in particular that he found he had really missed over the months. Sure they still greeted each other or had brief polite small talk when they crossed paths, but T’ryn had made it clear he still wasn’t ready for things to be normal and like they once were between them. But he missed Casa. She was funny and clever and he never got bored of talking with her. If she knew something on a topic that he didn’t, it never bothered him. It usually made him pepper her with questions to share what she knew. She was also always up for an adventure and he found he missed that as well and the thrill sneaking around brought.

It also explained why he was up before dawn and silently moving down the halls from his weyr to Casa’s. He almost laughed at it all. A bronzerider sneaking out to drag a goldrider out of bed so they could sneak off together to explore an area that was forbidden to everyone. He vaguely wondered if N’mor would still try blaming Casa for being a bad influence as Syrendryth snorted. You don’t need him to say it. I will. She is a bad influence but I also like that you are getting out again and your idea is mostly harmless. T’ryn sighed. It was always nice to have support, he supposed, though he wished it would extend to supporting his friends.

When he reached Casa’s door, he hesitated. What if she had company? He’d heard tales from the camping trip he bailed on, knew what she had told him about her trip to the Hold, and had heard rumours from some of their mutual friends that she liked company in her down time. Would he be interrupting something? What if some guy leaves when the door opens? It didn’t matter anymore, damn it! They weren’t a couple and hadn’t been for a long time. He still felt something for her and had a feeling that it was part of the reason why he missed her so much but the break up was kind of mutual and they really were better as friends. He couldn’t live up to what she expected in bed now and he couldn’t wrap his brain around group sex.

So he knocked, and waited, and finally heard feet shuffling his way. When the door opened he saw Casa, barely covered by whatever she wanted to call what she was wearing, and looking rather exhausted. Hopefully because he woke her from a deep sleep and not because someone else had kept her up. “Uh, hey!” He greeted quietly given the hour and forced some extra cheer into his voice as he felt his nerves wavering now that he saw her. “I uh heard a Lord was teaching you about High Reaches region and I’m feeling a bit restless and wondered if you wanted to share some of your knowledge and pick up some firsthand knew info while exploring the Weyr with me. Right now. Well, after you at least put shoes on.” He smiled, feeling a bit more comfortable again, though he was also doing his best to keep his gaze on Casa’s face and not wander any lower for a reminder of what he gave up.

Casa heard the knock on her door enough to have it enter her strange dreams, and she mumbled under her breath as she rolled over, flinging her arm out and hitting her bed mate in the face. That woke them both up, and Casa grumbled under her breath as the man rolled over and went back to sleep with a snort. Her nose scrunched up, and she decided she might as well pee since she was awake, suddenly aware of her bladder. It was Thallyath’s sleepy advice she put on something because there was someone on the other side of her door, that had Casa pausing.

It’s Syrendryth’s, the dragon sighed sleepily; ever since it had become apparent that Casa wasn’t going to tie herself down to the dumb human, or expect her to spend way too much time with his dumb bronze, Thallyath had ended up erring on the side of neutral uncaring. Her rider could spend time with them, if she wanted, so long as she didn’t go down the whole Let’s Be Mates Forever path again. She didn’t think that would happen, though. Casa was having far too much fun with her revolving door of dragonriders and her affair with the Lord Holder – who was the only one Thallyath approved of. Primarily because he was (unintentionally) assisting the dragon in making Casa a better Lady – at least publicly. The things he was teaching her behind closed doors well, so long as they stayed behind closed doors.

Thallyath had heard him make a quip about a ‘Lady in the streets, a whore in the sheets’ and Thallyath could work with that. So long as Casa was a ‘Lady in the streets’ she didn’t care what her silly rider got up to; not enough to make Casa’s life painful, anyway.

“Oh!” Tumbling out of bed, Casa ignored her snoring lover in order to find an item of clothing, any item, and pull it on. She ended up with one of her more alluring nightgowns; mostly sheer and barely long enough to cover her rear, it really wasn’t the type of thing you would greet a friend with at the door, but honestly, Casa greeted most of her lovers naked, so any form of clothing was suitable for a friend. Pulling the door open, Casa blinked blearily at the soft lighting in the hall, before focusing on and smiling at T’ryn.

“Hello!” The rather babbling invitation had Casa’s head tilting slightly to one side, before she grinned brightly. “Okay!” The quip about her putting on ‘at least shoes’ had Casa stifling a laugh behind her hand, and she smirked teasingly at T’ryn before grabbing his hand and drawing him into the weyr. “There should be food and drinks in the kitchen area,” she murmured, keeping her voice down as she closed the door. “No drugs,” she reassured, eyes twinkling in the dim light of a glow she’d fished up. “Gather some and I’ll bring a bag out when I’m dressed, and we can filch anything else from the kitchens before we go!”

Leaving T’ryn to his task, Casa danced off to the bedroom; the Candidate in her bed was still asleep, but the young goldrider completely ignored him as she pulled on suitable clothing: comfortable pants and sturdy boots. She even wore underwear, though it was mostly an unused piece of clothing in the past several months. With winter only a breath away, Casa dug up some of her unworn winter-wear, a warm long-sleeved top and a heavy jacket. She didn’t wear them in Ista, but she was aware that High Reaches was up near the mountains, and a lot cooler than Ista. Pulling her jacket on, she darted out of her bedroom, closing the door quietly behind her, and then made her way over to T’ryn. They put the items in the bag she’d found, and then she studied what he was wearing.

“High Reaches will be really cold, especially compared to here,” she warned, “They will probably even have snow already.” She held up her scarf and mittens as proof. “Go get some winter clothes, like you wore when we went to your Aunts. I’ll take Thallyath down and get some more food from the kitchens. Meet you near the lake?” Once she had his agreement, Casa grinned and gave him a quick hug (but no kiss, even though she wanted to plant a friendly one on his cheek) and then bounced off to put riding straps on her dragon, who grumbled half-heartedly about losing out on sleep.

That was a lot easier than he expected. No protest about the hour or already having plans or even explaining why that was the first thing he wanted to do with her in months. T’ryn stumbled inside and stared at her retreating backside as Casa went to dress and he was left in charge of grabbing food. He actually already had some snacks and water packed in his bag he left with Syrendryth –and not because he no longer trusted anything that came from Casa. If he couldn’t get a hold of her or she declined, then he would have still gone and wouldn’t have wasted time with packing. Still, he grabbed some items from her kitchen that would work well for their trip and tucked them into the bag that Casa held when she returned. Besides, it didn’t hurt to have extra supplies since he didn’t know how long they planned to explore.

While he was dressed in his usual attire with his riding jacket also left with Syrendryth, T’ryn had to admit he hadn’t thought about the temperature. He’d just been in Telgar not too long ago and while he could feel it starting to cool off, it never occurred to him that the other Weyrs might already be colder. “This is why I wanted to go with you,” he smiled at her first lesson and nodded his understanding at where to meet. He tensed a little under her hug before quickly returning it and just as quickly dashing back to his weyr to find his winter gear he hadn’t used since the last time he went skating at Eridella’s home before she said the ice would start to melt. He found everything all neatly tucked away in a drawer of heavier clothes that weren’t needed for Ista but worked well in other areas.

Once ready, T’ryn threw on his jacket and his cross-body satchel before mounting up to make their great escape. There was still the watch dragon to get by but he knew no one would really question why the young bronze and gold that used to date were now sneaking off together, especially if they didn’t do the jump until out of sight. He didn’t know how many people knew of Casa’s new hobby but either way, it’d either be seen as something romantic for the adorable and well-behaved couple to be doing before their day of duties or it’d be seen as her quiet shame of being with the uptight boy that never seemed to have fun anymore. He was okay with either view.

There wouldn’t be a watch dragon at High Reaches at this early hour either. That was one thing he did know about the region, and all abandoned Weyrs. They had been cleared out of what the older dragonriders called ungrateful squatters taking advantage of prime real estate to breed disgusting whers and now each active Weyr patrolled an inactive one every so often. He’d heard Fort and Telgar sometimes used them as punishment, sending a misbehaving dragonrider to stand post there for hours on end, but usually it was just a fly over that took no more than an hour to ensure no one was touching what they shouldn’t. So that would give them plenty of time to explore, even if it’d be pretty dark; which was why he brought several glow stones.

When he saw Casa, T’ryn found the old urge to run over and kiss her and mentally kicked himself to stop that. Yes, she looked damn good, as always, but the glow of excitement could be seen even with only the moonlight shining down on them. He decided to blame the thrill of doing something bad and about to go on an adventure. “Syrendryth chatted up Rilaleeyth,” because T’ryn didn’t know where all the old riders came from but knew J’ver was from that area and, he hated to admit, Rilaleeyth was so sweet and easy for his dragon to manipulate into co-operation, “and got the visuals for the trip without alerting J’ver since he was asleep and found the memories and she’ll keep quiet. I haven’t been anywhere in that region so I had to improvise in case you hadn’t been or didn’t want to come. Anyway, I think we’re all set. Fly low until we’re out of sight and then go?”

Casa giggled mischievously at the stealing of visuals from J’ver, the keeper of all things Secret. She knew he was related to Azrin – she’d gotten the whole family tree out of him as part of her education on, well, several regions. She couldn’t believe how freaking inter-related the Lords and their families were. It was almost worse than how inbred the dragons were! Shaking the thoughts from her mind, Casa grinned and decided not to tell T’ryn that she’d been over-head of the High Reaches area before; she wasn’t positive that she and Thallyath would have been able to obtain reliable images of the Weyr anyway. They could have made their way to the region easily, but it would have been a lot of flying, and that would have cut into their adventures!

“We’ve been in the region,” Casa said, surprising herself slightly with the sudden change of plan and letting T’ryn know. “We didn’t really go near the Weyr though.” She shrugged. Mostly, she’d had Thallyath take herself and Lord Azrin to the High Reaches area, so he could introduce her to his extended family, primarily for the purpose of politics and such, though she was sure he liked showing off that he had a direct contact with the Weyr; even if Thallyath was by far the smallest gold dragon, she was still a gold dragon, and he’d arrived on her back to the awed stares of his family. Casa didn’t mind; she’d found the whole scenario amusing and Thallyath had enjoyed the fawning.

“Sounds good,” she agreed easily to his plan of action, smiling in the moonlight. “Let’s go before we’re both drowning in sweat!” Even though Ista was decidedly cooler than it had been several months ago, it was certainly not cool enough for all the extra winterwear that Casa was dressed in! Laughing joyfully, with a clear tint of mischief, Casa bounded up and onto Thallyath, strapping herself in as T’ryn did the same, and waving her hand before her gold launched into the air. I told him we’re going to the beach, Thallyath said mildly, speaking to both Casa and Syrendryth, after the Watch Dragon asked where they were going. She didn’t really care to talk to Syrendryth, but she didn’t want him telling the other dragon something different.

Once Thallyath and Casa came to an agreement about being out of sight, and Thallyath was convinced they were out of good range, mumbling something about ‘clarity’ of conversation with the blue on watch, the gold turned expectantly to Syrendryth and waited for him to share the image of where they were going. As much as she disliked the dragon, she knew he had no real malice in him towards her – not enough to fudge the images he shared with her, at least, and once she had it, she winked between to appear high above High Reaches Weyr. Casa gave a crow of delight, the sound lost to the wind, as the gold dragon slowly descended.

T’ryn, if pressed, would admit to being slightly afraid that Syrendryth might not share the image of where they were going or give Thallyath some distorted one that would leave them lost between forever. He knew dragons were kind and wouldn’t intentionally hurt humans –unless they were blood hungry little suckers tearing away from their egg but that seemed to be the usual and accepted exception—so by that logic, Syrendryth wouldn’t hurt the dragon he disliked and the girl he didn’t think was good enough since doing so would hurt his own human. It was a jumbled mess of a thought and T’ryn let it go when he saw, and heard, Casa not too far from him when they appeared above High Reaches. He let out a sigh of relief and laughed with his own joy borne of sneaking out and getting away with it.

As they touched down in the bowl, T’ryn paused to look around. It was still too dark to see a lot of detail but that just added to the creepiness of it all. Empty Weyrs were so lonely and felt haunted with all the memories that lingered, both good and bad. Seeing one in the dark really wasn’t doing much to dispel that feeling but it didn’t sway him away from exploring. After settling himself on the ground, another look was given, trying to figure out which way to start.

“Should we start with the dining cavern? Maybe the barracks, depending on what we find first, I guess,” digging around in his bag, T’ryn pulled out two glow stones and handed one to Casa. “I definitely want to find the Weyrleader’s office and weyr. We can player leadership for a bit,” he laughed as he thought about them in charge of a Weyr, even an empty one. That was more than he wanted for himself and Casa had never seemed interested in that much responsibility either. Still, he felt like it’d be fun to act like kids again playing at such things and really hoped the old Weyrleader’s desk was still in the office, if nothing else.

“Who was the last Weyrleader here, do you know?” T’ryn wasn’t sure how much her lessons covered but maybe she knew the fact anyway from picking up conversations between old riders. Since it was dark and the terrain unknown, he instinctively held out his hand to help Casa walk over anything they might come across but also to keep them close together. When he realised what he was doing, he was proud of himself for keeping it on offer. Friends still did that sort of thing and he didn’t think she’d see it as babying her or anything such thing. Given the large smile and excitement he could barely contain, she had to know he was just eager to get going and might drag her along soon.

Sliding down from Thallyath, and feeling her dragon walking along behind her, Casa peered through the dim moonlight curiously. It was a clear night, and both moons were out, if not full, so while it was hardly good lighting, they weren’t stuck in pitch darkness, either. It kind of made the shadows look longer and darker, though, and Casa shivered to herself, feeling a chill wander down her spine. Closing the distance between herself and T’ryn, she took the hand he offered her without thought; she didn’t twine their fingers together, but held his hand with a gentle firmness that may have belied her discomfort with the sudden silent, dark and cold Weyr. It was so different from Ista!

“Weyrwoman Katila and Mutusoth. She was the first to banish her Weyr south.” She spoke quietly, gazing around curiously, imagining (unintentionally) all the sick and dying dragons, all the desperate riders. “I don’t remember the name of her Weyrleader.” She paused thoughtfully, even as they made their way towards the Weyr, footsteps crunching on the frosty ground. It didn’t look like there was any snow, but it was certainly cold enough for it in Casa’s opinion! “I don’t think he survived, though; I know Mutusoth died in the Plague – they never even tried to go South.” She felt, as she spoke their names with quiet reverence, as if she could feel their presence, and that of their dragons. It was making her skin crawl and she heard Thallyath snorting uncomfortably behind her, like a spooked horse.

Holding the glow stone that T’ryn had handed her in her non-hand-holding hand, Casa fidgeted with it as they made their way inside. “Definitely the Weyrwoman and Leader’s rooms,” Casa agreed, wondering what kind of papers might still be left lying around. She knew the Weyrs had been ravaged by the wher handlers and who knew who – or what – else since they were abandoned, but she hoped to still find something interesting. “I’d like to see the Sands, too,” she admitted. Someday, she’d be trapped on the Sands with Thallyath, and she was curious to see how different High Reaches was to Ista. Not that she wanted to move to this Weyr; it was so cold!

“Err… if I say I was just quizzing you for fun and that I completely remembered Katila as well instead of admitting I forgot, do I get a reward?” T’ryn laughed again, ashamed that he had forgotten Katila’s home Weyr in the moment but also not caring that he did. He was in a great mood, already feeling more like himself, like the version of himself from a year ago. No overthinking, no complicated emotions, no drama, just having fun with a friend. “But I have no idea who led with her. I kind of feel bad for him. He probably died in the plague and only a handful of people likely remember him at this point.” That was kind of a bummer, honestly. They could be in that position one day but as long as he made some sort of impact—other than Syrendryth’s first clutch being a disaster—then they’d be in the records kept by Harpers, maybe even be a part of a teaching song!

“But yeah, Sands as well! That could be a good spot to warm up in a bit and eat.” His tone was light, but it was hard not to think again about the last time he was on the Sands and what happened. Seeing one that hadn’t been used by dragons in what was practically forever would be interesting though. Likely have its own demons and tales of woe as well, but T’ryn knew they would never know them entirely, which was also a buzzkill. But that was a part of their exploring. When they went to Benden, they pieced together some ideas of what it was like in the final days and during an active normal day with the remnants they found. But they also made up a lot of stories for what they thought happened based on what they felt.

When they made it to an entrance, T’ryn stuck his hand with the glow inside, but it didn’t help much. A large open room could still be the barracks or dining cavern. Shrugging when he glanced at Casa, he led them inside and deemed it to be a barracks when a bed was spotted. “I’m guessing the Candidate Barracks. It’s so weird what it still left behind and the condition.” He let go of Casa’s hand to go look at the bed that had seen better days. Some looked to be in better condition and he wondered if that was the way time worked or if wher handles used to sleep in here and it was one of their leftovers. He wasn’t about to ask anyone about it, even if M’ris was pretty cool and might answer. But he was still a Weyrleader and would punish them for going where they weren’t allowed.

When they had their fill of that room, not finding anything worth snooping through, they moved on and found the dining area, which was also a letdown. What was he expecting? A dinner left set up? Even if they had left during meal prep, the holders that moved in would have cleaned it up so they could use the space for themselves. Not letting the two boring rooms get him down, T’ryn smiled at Casa as he headed for a hallway. “If all the layouts are pretty much the same, then this has to take us to the leader’s office. As we walk, tell me more about that Holder who is on his third wife and still no sons?” They had spent some of the searching with mundane chatter, catching each other up on things they’d been up to, but he really did like learning what Casa knew about the region and could tell she liked doing so. Why didn’t more people see she was more than just a pretty face?

Casa laughed softly at T’ryn’s question, amused but afraid of the lonely, echoing Weyr to be too loud. Her gaze as she glanced at her companion was teasing though. “Sure,” she played, wagging her finger at him. “You can have a pile of dried up old raisins for being a fibber,” she giggled again, enjoying herself, though careful not to get lost in the ways Azrin ‘punished’ her when she got information wrong, or admitted to bungling up a fact she – and he – knew she should actually know. His teaching methods worked very well on her, but Casa knew T’ryn, and she knew those methods would not work on her gentle, sweet, and ridiculously innocent friend.

“There is most likely records somewhere,” Casa replied, stepping a little closer to T’ryn when a breeze managed to whine through the doorway they’d used in just the right manner to make a shiver of fear streak down her spine; she could feel all the little hairs on the back of her neck and along her arms standing up on end. “I’ll ask Az,” she trailed off as they made their way into the room from the main hall, her skin still crawling. “This place is so much more creepy,” she mumbled; Casa swore she could feel the Riders and dragons of old breathing down her neck and it made her really uncomfortable.

When T’ryn dropped her hand, she made up for it by just about walking on his heels as she pressed against him, stumbling and looking around. She wasn’t too proud to admit the whole area – and probably the late hour wasn’t helping – was making her feel like she was going to explode from anticipation (and not the good kind!). Casa could feel her heart pounding and her breath was puffing out in little clouds of frosty air. “Probably used it for the new Handlers,” Casa said, mumbling as she pressed against T’ryn’s back while he peered around from a standstill. “While they taught them… whatever they learn.” Her nose scrunched up. Why would anyone want a wher? They seemed so cruel and viscous and stupid! Like really big new born dragons!

Linking her arm through T’ryn’s so she could walk beside him, and answer his questions about Holders, Casa peered around, her own glow stone held tightly in her free fist. She could feel Thallyath on the edge of her mind; the dragon was close, exploring some of the empty ledges to amuse herself. The sudden feeling of pure horror from Thallyath had Casa dropping her stone, and he bounced and rolled before stopping against one of the walls. Thallyath’s vocal bugle of shocked distress echoed through the night.

“Thally?!” Casa drew them to an immediate stop, and reached out mentally for her dragon.

I… I think I found… someone she said, her mind-voice tinged with horror, and Casa shuddered. They… didn’t make it between, she whispered, and Casa gasped, her hand flying up to cover her mouth as she leaned against T’ryn in horror. How had the remains of a dragon been missed? She’d spoken to Azrin about how the Holders had done their best to compile the bodies of dragons who had died on their ledges, and burned them, on account of what would surely have otherwise been an absolutely horrific stench. The dragonriders, when they’d returned, some few had been selected to scout the Weyrs, and – without getting close – alert the Weyrleaders so arrangements could be made to clean out … leftovers.

Casa felt her blood run cold suddenly. “Are you near it?!” She squawked, her eyes bulging at the sudden terror of Thallyath somehow contracting the disease that had – hopefully – been wiped out when the original dragons all fled South. She felt Thallyath’s reassurance. No. I didn’t land on the ledge. I could see it before I got too close. I don’t like this place. Can we go home?

“Not yet,” Casa whispered, relief rushing through her as she felt Thallyath seek out Syrendryth, suddenly in need of another living dragon – even if it was one she didn’t particularly like – and land near him. Not touching, and not overly close, but enough. Casa took a deep breath, and released it slowly. “Maybe we shouldn’t go near the Sands,” she said, frowning slightly, as she imagined them covered with the bones of baby dragons… But wouldn’t the Wher handler’s have gotten rid of them? She didn’t know, and that bothered her.

“Thallyath will stay near Syrendryth now,” Casa said softly, knowing – hoping – the bronze was less inclined to go poking around where he shouldn’t. “We should stay away from private Weyrs.” She frowned, “I don’t think what made the dragons sick could survive without a dragon to make sick?” She glanced at T’ryn, and shrugged with a frown, “But I don’t want to risk it!” She gave a tremulous smile, before trying to lighten the mood. “Come on, let’s go see what Katila left in her office!”

Thallyath’s cry nearly had T’ryn jumping out of his skin from shock. They were being so quiet despite knowing no one should be around at the early hour that he had expected the dragons to remain silent companions as well. He had no idea what would make the gold panic like that and getting half the conversation from Casa’s end wasn’t helping. He did his best to follow along and then Syrendryth offered his own explanation as to what happened and T’ryn swore his blood turned cold.

Even as he kept one arm around Casa’s waist to hold her close, he itched to rub his hands over his arms to warm up. He had never thought about the plague remaining active in the Weyrs. Surely that wasn’t possible after so much time and with nothing to live on? Besides, they currently occupied three of the Weyrs that had once thrived and then died under the plague that swept through the population and everyone was fine. But they also hadn’t found the remains of dragons… that he knew of. Maybe Ista had them as well and they were quietly removed before the cleaning crews came in to remove items and tidy up. Maybe his own weyr had seen a death or had remains. Why hadn’t he ever thought about that until now? Maybe because he trusted those in charge. Thinking on it now, maybe there was a reason why some weyrs were not available when moving in. T’ryn just assumed they weren’t as structurally sound but now he wondered.

He nodded at the idea to stay away from the private weyrs, though he didn’t think the Sands would hold anything too devastating. That was a perfect spot for breeding whers and with it being on the ground, it would have been easy to reach regularly. But he didn’t want to upset Casa further and wouldn’t press for them to explore where she didn’t want to go. He was probably just as scared as she was of finding skeletal remains but at least he only had an annoyed dragon in his head and not a freaked out one like he assumed Thallyath was given her cry and discovery.

“Y-yeah, I bet we can map out how her office looked,” T’ryn did his best to match her smile and enthusiasm, desperately wanting to continue the exploration and fun. Maybe they should leave. They were both already spooked given the dark and feeling like ghosts were watching them and now they knew there were skeletons lying around. It wasn’t safe, why did he think this was fine? Why would he risk any of their lives when he could have easily just hung out in Ista with Casa?

He held Casa’s hand as they continued down the hall, his mind trying to decide if they should stay or go even as he tried to focus on the surroundings so they didn’t trip or find something they shouldn’t have. When they reached a door, T’ryn had Casa stand back a bit and he peeked inside. So far so good. So he stepped in, moving the glow stone around from side to side as he walked in. “Looks clear in here. Come on in.” It was definitely an office. The desk told him as much, though there wasn’t much else left. He really hoped the Harpers were the ones to clear out the paperwork and records and not some Lord thinking they would be great souvenirs or holders that were cold and needed extra kindling for their fireplaces.

Sighing, T’ryn set his glow stone on the desk, repeating the action when Casa entered the room so he could take her gloved hands in his as he stood before her. “I’m sorry, Cas. This wasn’t one of my best ideas and I’ve put you and Thallyath in danger by coming here in general but especially in the dark. We can go home, if you’d like. Go to the beach and make our cover story real.” He gave a crooked smile as he lightly teased about their sneaking around and how even their cover story still seemed like sneaking around given the hour and their history. But he wanted her safe and happy and if that meant skinny dipping in the ocean with her, then that’s what he’d do. He’d even stay and have a picnic in the dark and creepy office if she wanted, but that didn’t seem as likely as a nude beach trip.

Casa was reassured by the warmth of T’ryn’s hand holding hers; it was firm and secure and real when the world around her felt as stable as smoke and as real as dragon’s eggs at the base of a rainbow. Casa smiled slightly, amused and endeared, when T’ryn had her hover back so he could check that the room was safe before inviting her in. Stepping into the office after T’ryn, Casa looked around as far as her glow stone would let her see – she’d picked it up after dropping it when Thallyath cried out – and she blinked when T’ryn took it and placed it on the desk before taking her hands.

Studying T’ryn’s face in the limited light, Casa sighed softly and smiled at him. Leaning forward, she placed a soft kiss on T’ryn’s cheek. “I like exploring the old Weyrs with you,” she said honestly, smiling gently and settling back into her own personal space. “I feel really jumpy,” Casa admitted, “and Thally wants to go home, but this is fun!” Lifting her gaze from T’ryn’s face, Casa looked around and gestured to the room they were in with their linked hands. “This is exciting, and interesting and I don’t want us to stop just because Thallyath stuck her nose where she shouldn’t have,” Casa grinned, eyes bright with cheek. Thallyath grumbled to herself but didn’t speak out to her rider.

“Do you want to go?” Casa asked, looking at T’ryn intently. “We can, but I don’t want you to think I’m anxious to leave.” She smiled softly, expression gentle and not at all judging her friend if he decided he had had enough of their current adventure. “To be honest,” she said, scrunching her nose up at herself, “I kind of sort of want to see the dragon bones…” She shook her head. “I don’t want to risk it, in case I somehow get Thallyath sick, but T’ryn!” She gasped, leaning forward. “A dragon skeleton!” She didn’t think anyone who hadn’t been alive for the plague or part of the ‘clean up crew’ would have ever seen a dragon’s skeleton before! Not when they vanished between at the end of their time.

“It’s a pity we can’t tell anyone we came here,” she continued, letting go of his hands to pick up her glow stone. “I bet the dragon healer’s could learn a lot from actually seeing a dragon’s skeleton.” Picking up her stone, and T’ryn’s, she handed her friend back his. “What do you want to do?” She asked, leaving the decision in his hands; After all, it had been his idea!

T’ryn hesitated, even after Casa retrieved their stones and seemed eager to continue. He had been too impulsive and hadn’t thought about the dangers he could place them in. Sure, there was the danger that they could be caught and get in trouble, maybe be grounded for a time, but that was kind of the thrill of doing it. Sneaking through Benden with Casa had been exhilarating both due to the company and knowing he was doing something he shouldn’t. He didn’t break rules; not big ones anyway. He recalled sneaking around a lot with N’mor in Katila, sneaking pieces of hide and what not for their own purposes, but this was different and far riskier.

Why hadn’t he thought about the risks of exploring in the dark, in a place that no one was allowed to visit? Because the pros outweighed the cons, even in the spur of the moment and now, having time to digest it all. He wanted to do this and he wanted the girl across from him to be there with him. Knowing that while she had been spooked she still wanted to explore as well helped in making the decision that left him nodding. “We’ll stay, but we’ll take it slow and maybe not role play the Weyrleader disciplining the rowdy goldrider after all.” He gave Casa a wicked grin as he walked around the desk, knowing –for once—how his innocent phrasing could be heard in a much more creative way and not minding it. He wasn’t immune to the woman’s sex appeal, even after everything that happened and his current aversion to relationships and sex. He could very easily picture that ‘discipline’ ending up with them on top of the desk with clothes scattered…

He dragged his mind away from that image before the exploration turned into a whole new level of uncomfortable and T’ryn bent down to look through the drawers. He was still hopefully they’d find something that was overlooked, but it really didn’t seem likely. When he stood again, he paused, unable to shake the discovery of the skeleton. They should avoid it, obviously, just in case there was the chance to revive the plague but something was bothering him about it. Why would a skeleton be left behind, even with parties being sent out to each Weyr to reclaim them and decide on where to spread out to next?

T’ryn sat on the edge of the desk, then scooted back so he could bring his legs up and get into a comfortable position as he worked it out. Why wasn’t High Reaches one of the next ones they moved to? It almost made more sense than Fort since it would spread them out a bit further. And not much could survive in the cold without proper protection, he assumed, given how humans bundled up. Why wasn’t the skeleton moved if proper searches had been conducted? They had to know about it…

“They know about it!” T’ryn jumped to his feet and spun around to where Casa was, excited at the conclusion he came to and how it had to be the right one. “They know, Cas! Why would they leave a skeleton out like that? Why didn’t we move out here instead of Fort? What if they found it and saw it like you did? A chance for dragon healers to study it? They might bring healers out here from time to time to spend the day studying it before bringing them home again. It has to be safe if they left it, or I guess that logic is kind of flawed since they’d have to approach it to remove it. But it can’t be the only one in six Weyrs that didn’t make it between. They likely did a lot more clean up than we really thought about for the Weyrs we’re in now.” They also didn’t find any human or dragon skeletons in Benden, but they also hadn’t explored every weyr.

Now that he said his theory out loud, some of the excitement drained and T’ryn did his best not to wilt under disappointment. Maybe he was wrong after all and it was infested. But it only travelled between dragons, humans never got sick and T’ryn figured if they kept their own dragons away from it, everything would still be fine. As he explained this to Casa, he rummaged through his bag and pulled out the small pouch of sandsoap and grinned sheepishly. “I’m overly prepared, I know. But at least we can go skinny dipping in the cold lake and wash up before getting near our chaperones.” He only had the soap for the same reason he had some bandages—in case they did get injured. But scrubbing clean, even if it was cold out, seemed like a good way to avoid anyone getting sick, just in case.

T’ryn’s teasing words when he accepted her interest in continuing had a surprised laugh bursting from Casa’s lips, and she giggled mischievously behind her hand as she shook her head at him playfully. She had no idea if he was just speaking generally, or if he had heard some of the gossip she knew was floating around about her. She’d tried to keep a lid on it, more for Thallyath’s sake than her own – what did she care what people thought of her? – but she knew some variation of what she got up to end enjoyed was whispered amongst her peers. Honestly, so long as no one figured out she was spreading her legs for Azrin, she didn’t care; her relationship with him was too important to risk losing. Not because of some silly emotional commitment to the man, but because he was interesting and taught her things – interesting things – both in and out of the bedroom.

Because her laughter had her missing the wicked look T’ryn threw her way, and he was busy poking around by the time she gathered herself together again, Casa didn’t respond with the coy quip that had been brewing on her lips; a pity, she thought, pouting, but she wasn’t willing to ruin the easy companionship that had fallen back between them with her inexhaustible libido. Besides, she’d learned in the saddest possible way that her desires between the sheets didn’t align at all with T’ryn’s. He was so gentle and sweet, and she just knew he’d never be comfortable with the rough, dominating way she liked her partners to be when there were no clothes in the way.

Casa squealed in surprise when T’ry was suddenly bounding off the desk he’d been sitting on, shouting (or as good as, in the quiet!) and she spun around, her eyes wide and her hand clutching her chest. Casa scowled at T’ryn for a fraction of a second, before his enthusiasm infected her, and she lowered her hand and her expression softened. Her breathing returned to normal after a few beats and she tilted her head at her friend. She listened eagerly to his explanation, eyes widening this time from excitement and interest rather than surprised fear.

“That would make sense,” she said honestly, chewing on her thumb nail as she considered T’ryn and the theory he presented. “Whers can’t travel between so they couldn’t get rid of the skeletons like that; they could have burned them, I suppose, but Whers can’t fly, either, so I doubt they’d need to come up to the upper levels.” Casa shuddered. “Can you imagine what they actually found, in all the Weyrs?” But that left her wondering; had the one in the weyr that Thallyath stumbled across been left on purpose, or was it missed in their efforts to clean up. Was there any plan to reopen this Weyr any time soon? She frowned thoughtfully, staring at the floor as she thought, and was startled from her tumbling thoughts when T’ryn’s ‘skinny dipping’ registered.

Casa looked up, her eyebrows lifting and she eyed the soap he was holding up, and then his eager face. “Its cold as between out there!” She exclaimed, mind immediately jumping to the idea of washing in the lake. Then she frowned. “Oh! The Bathing rooms!” Surely they were still heated and working! After all, the volcano the Weyr was set in was what warmed all the waters and the Hatching Sands. “We can,” she said, looking at T’ryn seriously, “But we have to find a working bathing room first, and we should find some Candidate Robes or something, so we don’t risk our clothes getting… I don’t even know. But I’d be more comfortable not poking around in clothing I’m going to wear on my dragon.”

Maybe they could leave their clothes in one bathing room, and use a a different one before going to the first one when they were clean? Was she being too paranoid about all this? Casa pursed her lips. She really wanted to see the dragon skeleton, but she was absolutely not going to risk her annoying but wonderful dragon to do so!

T'ryn could imagine what was found in the Weyrs, too easily in fact, and wished he could scrub away the images his mind was creating. He wanted to believe that other than the one skeleton that they now knew of, there wasn't anything else. But he knew better. Some dragons may have left their riders behind and the rider seemed able to go on... until they couldn't. He still didn't know how the ones that were now back in their lives were still functioning on any level. Oddly though, that wasn't what was breaking his heart as much as the mementos of happier times. It was kind of what they were doing there, wasn't it? Looking for items left behind. They so far had found mostly files and boring items, but what if they found a doll that was someone's favourite toy or a drawing that was of a loved one? No doubt the owner was now a forgotten memory. So on top of all the emotions that would come with a find like that, he had to worry about being scared out of his head with a skeleton. Great. At least he had someone with him, even if she was becoming paranoid.

Honestly, he felt like Casa was overthinking everything now, which was sort of funny since he was the one that was always accused of such a thing. Unless Thallyath was landing on every ledge and peering in, she likely saw the skeleton while flying, meaning others would have done so as well. Actually, they likely had peeked into every weyr in the past when they were clearing out the handlers and travelers looking for a home for a while. T'ryn was certain the older dragonriders knew about the skeleton and they probably did bring people to study it. He doubted they wore extra clothes or took baths before mounting up again. But, maybe they did. The old riders would be way more paranoid having lived through the plague, so even if it was proved to be safe, they probably still made everyone scrub down. Not like it would hurt them to change and bathe, though it would take up time. T'ryn wished he knew when patrols came by so they could time it and be out. Probably should have thought about that before being spontaneous.

"All right. So should we back track to the Candidate Barracks to find twenty-five turn old robes and then head off to find bathing rooms on route to the uh, not-so-buried treasure?" He held out his hand in invitation. It was still dark and they were both a bit spooked, so it wouldn't hurt to keep close. "Thallyath can let you know the general location and we'll head outside and back in closer to that area." It'd be quicker and involve less dark halls filled with more potential mysteries than he currently could handle.

Casa tilted her head, considering what T’ryn said in summary of her own words, and then smiled brightly in the dim light. “Exactly,” her tone held a whisper of amusement; she knew she was being paranoid and a little over the top, but really, her dragon’s life was worth that – and her own, really, since she couldn’t imagine living for even a moment without Thallyath. The thought itself made her stomach coil in terrified nausea. Taking a deep breath, Casa released the air slowly even as she reached forward to take T’ryn’s hand and held tight as he lead them out of the room. Honestly, she didn’t really like the idea of wearing something so old, especially when she knew it wouldn’t have been taken care of in that time, but she also knew it was too cold to go naked, and she was pretty sure T’ryn would be more uncomfortable by that!

They backtracked quickly, finding the barracks after only a couple of false starts that had Casa deciding she needed to work on her ability to recall directions, especially inside the Weyr. Maybe Azrin would have some ideas for how she could learn the lay of buildings quickly and easily – if nothing else, it would be a fun way to find rooms she could hide and fuck in when she was doing the whole ‘I’m a wonderful good goldrider and aren’t I pretty’ at social gatherings. They were such a bore, though misleading and playing mind games with the Holders usually made up or it, and she usually got paid for her good behaviour with hot sex, so she supposed it could be a lot worse.

Once they’d fond some old robes, which were clearly unloved and Casa was surprised they were even in one piece – what had they been made from?! – they’d been able to quickly find a bathing room. Casa carefully put hteir clothing on the very farthest side and they slipped into the robes, trotting back out to the closest ledge so Thallyath could pick them up and drop them off on a nearby ledge. Casa had been more than slightly surprised that Syrendryth wasn’t eating Thallyath alive for daring to touch his rider, but maybe he was sleeping or found something else to poke at? Either way, they slipped back into the Weyr and made their way to the private weyr in question. It was as they were standing outside the door that Casa felt her courage leave her. And not in a trickle or anything; it gushed out and ran for the fucking hills, leaving her staring at the door without moving, her face pale.

Could they do this? Should they do this? Was it worth the risk? What if they somehow managed to get sick? What if they caused the whole Plague to spring up again and decimate the dragon population once more? What if some stupid firelizard came looking for one of them, and somehow got sick again and the whole damned past was repeated? Casa couldn’t bring herself to move, not forward anyway, and instead stepped back a pace, letting T’ryn lead the way if he thought they should, but also more than eager to bolt back towards the baths… She wanted to see the skeleton, but the what ifs were making her feel sick with fear.

T'ryn honestly felt silly for changing into the old and musty robe but it made Casa feel better and even he knew he had been and apparently still was whipped for the girl. He really didn't think the clothing would make a difference and figured enough time had passed to kill off anything that still lived on the skeleton in the cold weather. So when they dismounted from Thallyath --Syrendryth didn't care as he was resting in the warm Hatching Grounds and didn't want to share a ledge with all of them-- T'ryn didn't have as much fear running through him as Casa did.

He noticed her hesitation and didn't judge her for it; he simply smiled and walked for the entrance. He wasn't even going to take her hand and make her come in. She had been the one that was more worried about the consequences in this instance than he was --he was still convinced the Weyrleaders knew and let people come and study it-- and if she wanted to wait outside, that was fine with him. His curiosity wouldn't let him back out now, though.

As he entered the room with his little stone guiding the way, T'ryn gasped when the light finally reached the skeleton, illuminating it in such a way that it cast dancing shadows on it, making it seem like it still breathed. "Wow..." it was barely above a whisper and he couldn't think of anything else to say that was more eloquent and fit how he was feeling. It was so rare to see a dragon's skeleton, thanks to their ability to blink between just before death that T'ryn didn't know how he felt looking at this one. It was truly amazing to behold, knowing that this was what Syrendryth looked like under his beautiful hide but it was also rather depressing. This dragon had bonded to a human so long ago and now both were dead; or so he assumed, though the rider was likely just as crazy as the ex-riders he knew. This dragon also died from the plague that nearly wiped out the entire species and changed so much about the world.

Entranced, T'ryn sat down by the skull and laid a hand on it, like he did so regularly with his own dragon. A gentle touch filled with his love for the bronze giant because sometimes that was all that was needed to convey his feelings and thoughts. He did it now because no one else ever would again. "I'm so sorry, my nameless friend. You were loved and there must still be someone that thinks of you. I'll think of you now as well." His eyes started watering as he thought about what life was like back then and what this dragon was like and how he would have felt if that happened to Syrendryth. He shut his eyes, stroking the skull lightly as if he was petting the great beast that was still alive.

He wished there was a way to find out who this was. Wait, there was! The rider's name would potentially still be on the weyr's door from the hall. If he could find that, then there was a chance he could find who the rider was bonded to. Assuming anyone still remembered the name and Harper Hall would share the Impression records if not.

It didn’t take long for curiosity to get the better of Casa, to overwhelm her fear. After all, she reasoned, Syrendryth wouldn’t put T’ryn’s life at risk (or let him risk his own life) even if it meant showing up Casa, that she was sure of. Primarily, because Thallyath would never let Casa do anything to risk either of them, just to be ‘better’ than the ‘ridiculous bronze’. So, while Casa was still distinctly uncomfortable, and while she was also convinced that something bad was likely to come of their late-night adventure, she just couldn’t bring herself to remain uncomfortably in the hall while T’ryn had been inside for ages.

Creeping into the room, her shoulders drawn up and her posture more than slightly hunched, Casa tip-toed further into the darkness, balancing the little lightstone on the back of her hand, because she was too inclined to clench it in her fist, and it really couldn’t give off any light in such a grasp. Besides; the balancing act forced her to concentrate on more than her fear, and before she knew it, she was on the edge of the dragon’s room, hesitating as her eyes adjusted to the sliver of extra light that T’ryn’s stone and the moons provided.

Casa jumped, causing her stone to tumble to the ground and roll over towards T’ryn, when he spoke. Clutching at her chest, eyes wide and heart pounding, Casa gulped for breath as she calmed herself and crept close to her friend, eyeing the skeleton with fascination. Casa could feel a curious and repulsed Thallyath also peering through her eyes, too wary to actually come back to the ledge herself. “Wow,” Casa breathed, coming to stand right behind T’ryn, one knee pressed to his back. She was still trembling, but her curiosity was fierce. “Do you think it’s a green?” She asked softly, picking up her stone and walking along the skeleton, lighting it up step by step, the shadows leaping and retreating. “It’s so small…”

I am small. But I am not green! Thallyath snorted, the sound carrying in the still air from the ledge a couple of weyrs across.

“Thallyath reminds me that pre-plague were smaller, though,” Casa paraphrased her dragon, picking up on that which went unsaid along their bond. Her dragon wasn’t wrong, though – a lot of the elder dragons were a lot smaller than the current ones. Still… Casa slowly made her way back to T’ryn. She wasn’t game to touch the skeleton like he was, and her gut was still active with anxiety, but she was now on a mission for answers!

Thallyath beat him to the punch when it came to explaining the size of the dragons, though T’ryn believed Casa really only had been reminded. She was smart and even if she wasn’t, that was pretty basic knowledge that anyone would learn and retain. But Casa was clearly rattled by it still and when she came back to stand near him, he reached a hand up and easily found her free one to hold. He gave it a light squeeze in support, silently letting Casa know he was there for her and she wasn’t alone with her fears or the unknown result of what their exploring unlocked—though he was still convinced they were safe from diseases and only risked a lecture from M’ris.

“I wonder if there’s a way to know the gender if nothing else just by looking at the skeleton,” T’ryn liked learning and he loved puzzles. A skeleton seemed like a good combination of the two interests. He had never seen a diagram of a dragon skeleton before and only knew the basic physiology of a dragon thanks to Candidate and Weyrling lessons. It was sad to think about but not for the first time since he saw the skeleton he wondered if anyone was still alive that knew such things and had studied a dragon intensely.

He shook himself free of his thoughts and thought about the larger puzzle; who was this and what happened to their rider? Still holding Casa’s hand, T’ryn lowered the one that was petting the dragon’s skull and shifted to look up at Casa. She was equal parts eerie in the shadows and low light and beautiful with the way the light caused her to glow. “We have names on our doors, right? I think that was carried over from pre-plague. I heard a rumour that part of the clean-up was removing name plaques so survivors wouldn’t have the added trauma with the moving back in.” He couldn’t imagine what that would have been like. In fact, how did the survivors feel knowing someone else lived in their friend’s old home? Maybe they didn’t even take their own weyr back because of memories. Sometimes he wondered who lived in his weyr before he was even born and it made him feel like he was trespassing.

“We can check the door here for a name and then… I don’t think we want to ask any former High Reaches resident about it,” again, memories were tricky and he didn’t want to upset anyone. Besides, it would also mean they’d have to admit to snooping where they were forbidden to go. “But maybe we can gain access to Harper Hall? I know they would have their own records but I heard they also raided the Weyrs turns ago to keep the history intact.” He wasn’t sure they would be welcomed in the Hall but they had to know someone that could help them. It was a long shot but it was the only one he could think of.
