Madiquel was having a wonderful time! While they waited for R’nya to get back and the eggs to begin Hatching, Rhaedalyn pointed out the people she knew, Candidates she had heard of or knew personally, and promised to introduce Madiquel to some of her friends after the Hatching if they hung around. Madiquel had never really gotten to spend one-on-one time with the woman, and found she really enjoyed it! Rhaedalyn was in a strange land between friend and mother, and she adored her more and more with every moment they spent together. Madiquel wanted nothing so much as to make the woman proud, and she paid avid attention to the information she was given, eagerly indicating her desire to meet Rhaedalyn’s friends even as she blushed with a combination of shyness and pleasure. She felt so grown up!
The girl waved excitedly to Quilriana and Quilista when they arrived. She hadn’t met them before, but she recognised them both because R’nya was with them, and because Quinvalis had described them to her. She could see they were his family, too, and she grinned brightly at them before turning to look at Quinvalis and wave brightly, as if to say ‘I saw your family!’ Still grinning, Madiquel was distracted by Clover coming back from between with a short note from A’tay, who had apparently enjoyed the comical drawing she’d sent him of his brother. Giggling to herself, Madiquel settled Clover on her lap to watch the start of the Hatching, which would hopefully start soon! Bright green gaze danced between the eggs, her friends on the Sands, and either R’nya or Rhaedalyn when they talked to her. Gosh, she felt so special!
The arrival of the Healers had Madiquel sitting up straighter, not seeing R’nya chuckle as he nudged Rhaedalyn gently and nodded at the girl; Madiquel’s gaze was glued on the group as they apparently had a meeting before spreading out around the Sands. She so desperately wanted to be one of them! It didn’t escape her notice that not a single one was a woman, or that they were all older, and she glanced up at R’nya in concern but he just smiled at her reassuringly and Madiquel’s bright grin returned. She just knew he and her Papa would work hard to make her dream come true!
It felt like an eternity before the eggs finally started to shift and rock with intent and Clover had just returned from taking a note to A’tay saying that nothing was happening, when the first couple of eggs finally revealed their dragonets, and Madiquel gasped in delight. Madiquel took great care to watch and remember as much as possible, and as soon as there was a gap longer than five minutes between Hatchings, Madiquel was scribbling on her little pieces of paper and sending Clover off to Ista with information about what had Hatched, and who they had Impressed. Madiquel was reserved and didn’t know all the Candidates that were standing, but she did her best to use the names she knew, and describe the ones she didn’t.
When one of the little greens opted to Impress to a girl, Madiquel gasped and leaned forward a little, trying to see who the young woman was. It took her a moment before she recognised Daelyne, a fellow Weyrbrat though certainly not one she’d been around a lot. For one, Madiquel was four or five Turns younger than the other girl and that tended to be a lifetime for some people – especially at their current ages. Madiquel, however, had a feeling it had more to do with the elder teen having had a child; her Papa had made Madiquel blush intensely and hide in mortification when he’d warned her he didn’t want grandchildren until she was in her thirties!
When there was a pause in Hatchings after Daelyne Impressed, Madiquel quickly put charcoal to paper to update A’tay, her writing messy and her spelling worse than usual in her effort to write quickly and with as much information as possible instead of being careful. She wasn’t thinking about it, but their letters had proven A’tay could puzzle out what she meant more often than not, and would ask for clarification if she bumbled up that badly. Which she probably did! Her note was interrupted when the next couple of eggs Hatched, and Madiquel gasped, her hand over her mouth when one of the greens swiped at a young man near Quinvalis and she fought to catch his eye, determined to know he was okay!
It was only after Quinvalis sent her a small smile that Madiquel sighed and went back to her letter to A’tay, quickly finishing it up with how badly her heart was pounding because the little green had scratched up the boy next to her friend. She was so glad he hadn’t been injured, but it had also reminded her fiercely how dangerous a Hatching could be, and Madiquel was doing her best to not let the memories of the Istan Hatching A’tay had Impressed at flood her mind. She wished she could remember it just by being happy for her friend, and not the sight of all that blood and carnage!
