In some ways, Mulrissa felt she had done this many times. She remembered the way the stands gradually filled, the way the Candidates were herded onto the Sands, she’d seen it before. Even so this Hatching was undeniably different. For one, she was both a lot more excited and more nervous. On Bedith’s behalf, on her own, for her children who were Standing. Bedith was going to have so many amazing children! And maybe her own children would Impress one of them. But she also worried about something going wrong. What if someone got hurt? What if her children got hurt? Rissa sighed, gently tossing her hair behind her shoulder as she watched more people file in. It was happening no matter what, so no use worrying.
She smiled at T’ryn when he arrived, returning his greeting and sliding down Bedith’s leg to give him a one-armed hug. The young bronzerider seemed a bit jittery, and though he wasn’t doing terribly at covering it up anyone who had spoken to him more than twice would know he was stressing. Rissa understood the feeling, and she wanted to help him calm down if possible.
“It is a nicer time of day, but watch them take all night. I might fall asleep and fall off Bedith, and wouldn’t that be horribly embarrassing?” She laughed lightly, giving T’ryn a pat on the shoulder before stepping back to lean against Bedith again. More people stopped by to say hello to her and T’ryn, some waving from the stands. Rissa could make out her sister in the stands, and eventually she spotted her children walk onto the Sands. She waved to both of them, beaming at them both. Chalris waved back, and Ginorra looked as if she wanted to pretend she didn’t know Mulrissa, but she did eventually give a small wave before turning away to speak to some friends. Teenagers, honestly.

Almost two hours after Mulrissa had realized the eggs were hatching, everyone there for the Hatching held their breath as some of the eggs started rocking more wildly. A small cluster towards the far side of the Clutch from Bedith seemed to all want to hatch together, three of the eggs all moving rather aggressively. A foot broke through one shell at nearly the same moment a tail smashed through the shell of another, and theEloquence green fell out of her egg as the rest of her body followed momentum of her tail. She stumbled as she tried to get to her feet, bumping gently against her neighbor, who by now had escaped his egg with less drama than his sister. Scorn bronze shoved Eloquence with his shoulder, sending her tumbling to the ground again with a squeal. Apparently chagrined, Scorn helped nudge her back to her feet before turning and trotting directly to a young man nearby, bumping him much the same way he’d shouldered his sister. Eloquence stared after him, wide-eyed, before whirling around and dashing to the far side of the sands, skidding into a younger boy who was hanging back nervously and chirping at him delightedly.
Rissa smiled, a good deal of the tension of the Hatching gone as it was confirmed the eggs were indeed hatching and Impressing. And what cute dragonets they were, acting so much like siblings already. She could absolutely recall her own children doing similar things when they were younger. Bedith, for her part, was rather smug; already a bronze had hatched. Mulrissa gave the gold’s leg a pat, amused at how pleased the dragon was, but also feeling some of the pride as well.
The third dragonet from the eager group of eggs finally broke through their shell, andEternity scrambled free, dancing through a nearby group of Candidates, getting close to each one before twirling away, until she found the right one, twining herself around his legs and almost knocking him over.

After a few minutes of stillness, another dragonet decided to reveal themself, as theFortune green toppled from her egg. She sniffed around in a circle, investigating each direction before picking one and stumbling that way. Sitting in front of one Candidate, Fortune tilted her head at him curiously, before standing up and walking to a boy standing a few feet behind the first one, crooning and pressing her nose into his stomach.
AsFortune Impressed, two eggs on opposite sides of the Clutch started moving more violently. Conscience blue emerged first, cautiously creeping from his egg and looking around hesitantly, clearly nervous about how big the world was. Before Conscience could get up the courage to move farther from his egg, Infinity flopped out of her egg, landing in the sand on her back. With a huff she lolled around for a moment, tongue hanging out, before she stood and shook herself off. Dreamily gazing about she meandered over to a circle of Candidates before flopping down in the middle of them. They all stared at her, breath held, until she lifted her head up to stare directly at a young man and croon at him.
Conscience still hovered around his egg, fear not having abated, but not for long. A nearby egg toppled over and rolled toward him, the dragonet inside spilling out on top of him. With a shriek, Conscience jumped several feet in the air before dashing to the far side of the sides, hiding behind a young man’s legs and whimpering. At least he knew his bonded would protect him. Staring blankly after her brother, Wondrous shook herself off before wobbling away to Impress.

Mulrissa almost missedBreath’s hatching, as he slipped from his egg almost silently, and only walked a few paces before planting himself next to a tall young man who seemed very surprised to see him. She shook her head with a laugh glad she hadn’t missed the pale blue hatchling. That would have thrown her count off, and she’d have scared herself when there wasn’t the right amount of eggs left. Bedith huffed at her rider’s odd concerns, electing to ignore them in favor of watching the first of her children eating their first meals. She knew exactly how many eggs were left, her rider needed only to ask.
