When the humming indicating the eggs were going to hatch started up Tala realized how scared she actually was. The last time she’d Stood was for Nadioth’s Clutch, and that had been a nightmare for her. For the most part, Tala had managed to push the fears and memories aside, focusing on the present instead, but periodically they cropped up again. Now, apparently, they had decided to hit full force, and it took several moments before Tala realized she’d stopped breathing. Taking a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself, again trying to shove down the fear, Tala reminded herself it was worth it.
She very intently got dressed for the Hatching. Conveniently enough, she’d taken a bath earlier in the day and didn’t bother having another. It wasn’t disgustingly hot in Telgar, and was in fact reasonably cool, so she hadn’t already gotten gross and sweaty since the bath, so another one wasn’t needed. Instead Tala took her time getting changed, though putting on what was essentially and oversized pillowcase with holes cut in it didn’t exactly take very long. It actually took some effort to take more than about three seconds changing into the thing; Tala saw a few Candidates who got the pillowcase on in less. After that, she stalled by slowly brushing her hair. Twice. And then again. It was long enough now she had to put it back, which she very rarely did, and she managed to kill more time trying to tie it back neatly — her first few attempts kept coming out lopsided.
Then there was nothing left for her to do to prepare, and Tala headed to the Stands. She joined the small crowd of gold Candidates, a little too nervous to initiate a conversation with anyone. Instead, she just milled around the group, vaguely listening to whatever the nearest person was saying, and watching the periodic rocking of the eggs.
