For once, a Hatching happened when R’nd wasn’t in bed with B’jin, sleeping or otherwise. They had been in the sitting area, drinking a bottle of wine and enjoying each other’s company, sometimes with mundane tales of their day or when pestered enough, R’nd gave B’jin a story or two from his childhood. Though, they weren’t always exciting either given Eridella’s enjoyment in telling embarrassing stories and R’nd preferred they be kept buried forever.
Since they were both used to Hatchings and their waiting game, R’nd moved over to the kitchen to slice up some apples, a small block of cheese, and bread, making a light snack to enjoy with the wine before they dressed and made their appearance. He definitely wasn’t going to miss this one! It was never really considered rude if one didn’t show up to a Hatching but it was always the talk of the Weyr for days so it was best not to miss it. Given that his eldest son’s dragon sired this clutch, R’nd had even more reason to attend this one. He was so proud of T’ryn and was pretty excited to be able to show his support as a father in another way. Of course if he thought about it all for too long he recalled that his eldest son was old enough to win gold Flights, meaning he was having sex, meaning he could R’nd a grandfather any day. He really didn’t like thinking about that.
When it finally was time to move down, R’nd changed into something more comfortable for sitting in that heat for hours and walked holding hands with B’jin down to the Sands. There had been some grumbling when R’nd sent the dragons down earlier to claim their preferred ledge, but the kisses to his cheek or his held hand seemed to pacify B’jin enough to let it slide. They arrived to an already decent sized crowd filling the stands, but R’nd spotted the bench behind N’mor and Z’rin was open and he sent B’jin off to greet his son and claim the seats as he went to his own son.
R’nd got as close as he dared to both the eggs and dragons, giving them a respectable space between them all. He gave his congratulations to the dragons, greeted Mulrissa warmly, and gushed a bit at T’ryn as a proud dad. When his son shifted a bit in embarrassment, he eased up and told him everything would be fine and to look for him if he felt his confidence or composure flagging.
Settling in beside B’jin, R’nd checked out the Candidates, seeing many that he had Searched, wanting desperately to go meet with them as well. He stayed in his seat, though, not daring to get too close to the eggs again when they could start breaking shell at any moment. This was the Candidates and dragonets’ time to shine, not his. He’d console and congratulate as needed after. But when his gaze found the dark haired girl from Ista that had bravely defended Ayontay and seemed to care so much about his middle son, R’nd paused, watching her make faces at someone in the stands.
When she laughed and looked away, he followed her gaze to see it on T’ryn, where she also made a face at him, causing him to laugh and give her a look that told her to behave. It made her laugh more as she crossed her heart, likely promising she’d try, blew him a kiss, and turned back to talk to the girl beside her. Who was she? He thought she was tied to Ayontay, but maybe not, especially while he was focused on Xyxyth. Was she T’ryn’s new love interest? Teenagers were full of drama!
