Vessaelia was slowly going out of her mind. The Hatching was several days late! Was there something wrong with the eggs? She knew they weren’t always going to hatch right on time, just like a woman might be early or late in giving birth. But that didn’t ease the fears she had been nursing. This was the first clutch in nearly three turns to have a gold egg! That meant it was also the first Hatching she was Standing at in nearly three turns. She always could have gone to Ista for their Hatchings but she was determined to Impress gold, so why bother with any other colour? But the lack of golds did make it feel like she was cursed. No one would take her as a wife and now even the dragons didn’t want her? When she had finally found the confidence to confess her distress to A’dis, she thought he had taken it well and soothed her fears for a time.
He was another reason why she definitely needed this gold to want her. How could she continue to keep his interest if she never Impressed? Aged out? No self-respecting bronzerider would want to stay with her! Of course, he was sweeter than most but she wanted to give him something he deserved as well. She didn’t want to be something else her father could throw in his face to prove he was a failure.
So when the dragons started humming and the message came to be ready within the hour, Vessaelia took it very seriously. She almost dressed and rushed right to the Sands to show the little gold how punctual and proper she was, but that wouldn’t be enough. She had to look the part as well! So it was with great haste that Vessaelia got her bathing items together and dashed off to the bath, not caring who was already in there—though she did spare a thought to the conversation with Tala about bathing with the barely teen boys, making her stifle a giggle.
Once she was bathed, Vessaelia donned the ugly robe and her comfortable boots that did a decent job of keeping her feet somewhat comfortable. She took her time brushing her hair and then put it up in a neat bun, making sure that not even a strand was falling free. She studied her face and hair in the small mirror her mother had given her as gift on her last birthday before she passed away and nodded in approval. It was so exciting to finally be able to Stand once more and show everyone how perfect she would be as a goldrider.
She arrived before most of the other gold Candidates but she still had to wait to be let onto the Sands until they had all arrived so they could go over the rules once more. Once they were let in and settled into their corner, Vessaelia searched out the gold egg, wanting to keep an eye on it during the ruckus that would commence with dragonets popping out everywhere. Then she scanned the stands for anyone she knew, waving when she did.
This had to be the day. It had to be! She couldn’t wait another three turns for her chance!
